Does the the traveler really want to help us?

so I was thinking the traveler has been to a bunch of worlds, including the fallen's homeworld, even making the fallen guardians, but every time the "darkness" showed up it ran away. in the story it said that the traveler protected us from the darkness...what if it was crippled trying to run away so its only choice was to help us? what does it get out of helping us? it was hinted at that we are "food" for the traveler, maybe something like how either is for the fallen, as long as we use the light and fight and die for it maybe we generate some type of food for it? maybe its like the hive that need "destruction" to live. We sure do seem to do alot of killing and murdering not just to protect our self's but the traveler. Calus does hit at something "stronger than the light" and it does feel like he is trying to recruit guardians and there was a rumor about a 4th "darkness" subclass coming up.

      • By the way it acted with the Ammonites and the Leviathan of Fundament, it looks that way. It seeks to enrich civilizations. Why it stayed to defend us is unknown, but lord knows it probably stayed asleep because of the damn Darkness. It's like a -blam!-ing homing beacon. "HEY ILLUMINATI COME GET ME!!"

        • He's held hostage by Rasputin. If he attempts to leave than Rasputin will unleash hell. Rasputin knows that if the traveler leaves than we'll plunge into further darkness and may never come out if it.

          • Actually I believe in what little lore we got in D1 (and maybe that Book thing people keep mentioning), it's implied pretty heavily that the traveller left BEFORE the darkness got there. The ghost says in D1 that before us, 'there had never been a guardian, and there had never been a ghost'. Somewhere I recall reading these blurbs that either heavily implied or outright stated that the traveller, until us, would just uplift each society it came across, then leave. Maybe it would give them some special piece of technology, but that's all. I think it tried to fight a few times, but not the way it did with us. With the Fallen, it stayed only long enough to usher in their own personal 'Golden Age', then left them, but when the darkness came (and the traveller was long gone) that 'age' ended, and so they sought out the traveller again to aide them. Hence why they're so pissed off at us for 'stealing' it. I will admit, though - that idea of our dying giving some kind of sustenance to the traveler is interesting - I don't think it's what they'll go for, but it's interesting, for sure~

          • Pretty sure Void is the 'darkness'. 'Void Light' as its called is oxymoronical, for lack of better term. When we are referred to as food for the Traveler, its a metaphor. The Traveler 'hungers' for the interaction it gets from Humans, and gives Humans the powers they have to protect themselves, because the Traveler sees good in them, I think. If the Traveler didn't offer the same thing to the Fallen, then the Traveler maybe didn't like them quite as much. The Fallen are a bit more hierarchical, and abusive even. They seem to value strength above all else, like much of the 'darker' races. Humans are supposed to be more noble. I think Calus has some truthful information he wants to share with us, where as the Speaker basically had 'white lies'. The Speaker really didn't even communicate with the Traveler, just spoke on its behalf, to give people a hopeful message. I think there is some debate about 'midnight exigent' and how Rasputin shot down the Traveler to prevent its escape. It may be precisely what happened, but I'm not 100% sure, there's some dispute and I don't remember the details.

              • We know the Traveler has been fleeing from the Darkness for a very, very long time and has encountered other civilizations like the Fallen's home world. We also know that the Darkness destroyed these civilizations because they were in the path of Traveler (the Fallen collapse was called the whirlwind). The only difference now is that the Traveler decided to stay on Earth, release the Ghosts and choose humanity to fight off the Darkness because it was crippled and couldn't leave like it had done before. I don't think it wants to help us, but rather it's using as a last defense against its ancient enemy because it has no other choice but to fight and win.

The Traveler didn't make Fallen Guardians. Remember that the Guardians were only created following the Collapse. We can assume because it wasn't damaged when it came to Earth that the Traveler left the Fallen before their collapse. We're the last resort of a crippled Traveler fighting back against the Darkness. It's implied humanity is the first race the Traveler has ever done this with. I think you're on to something with the Traveler trying to flee during the Collapse. This was hinted at in Destiny 1. There was a grimoire card that revealed Rasputin had orders to cripple the Traveler if it tried to abandon humanity. And we still don't know whether it was the Darkness or Rasputin that broke the Shard off the Traveler. As for the fourth subclass rumour, I really don't think it's darkness. That wasn't even part of the original rumour. The rumour comes from a line Ikora says in the Tower, where she wonders if there's a fourth type of Light.

                • We really do not know what the Traveler did with other civilizations. The only real record is from Fundament where the Traveler remained until the Ammonites had been totally destroyed before leaving. A flavour text on a weapon is meaningless without context for the Fallen. Secondly there is no evidence that the Traveler made Fallen Guardians. The reason the Traveler remained, and yes we know it chose to stay, was because it had a vision when approaching our solar system, a vision that filled it with hope. Lastly on the nature of the Traveler we have the Books of Sorrow
++We live on the edge of a war— —a war between Formless and Form++ ++between the Deep and the Sky— ++MY EYES ARE WIDE, MY GAZE IS LONG++ —Across the universe, as far as I see++ ++the Sky works to charge its fires— —and the Deep drowns the ash++ —Sky builds gentle places, safe for life++ ++Beloved Fundament, refuge of trillions— —The Sky treasures this rich place++
and
++The Sky builds new life++ —Against the onset of ruin— ++Towards a gentle world++ —The Deep embraces death— ++Saying: this is inevitable and right++ —I exist as hungry ruin— ++TURN BACK FROM THE WORLD-KILLING WAY++ ++OR YOU WILL LIVE AS DEATH AND DEVASTATION++ —The Sky is the harder way. But it is kinder.— —My charge is balanced: my voice exhausted.—
The Traveler is synonymous/represents the Sky, The Darkness the Deep. The last warning became true of the Krill, they became death and devastation under the Deep/Darkness as the Hive.

                        • I think from thw final cutscene...
The traveler came and helped us, but the darkness found it, so it went silent to hide. It wanted to help this whole time, but couldn't because it knew it would attract an even greater threat. It had to react to gaul in the end, so the darkness saw that and is now on approach. This will probably show up as a dlc raid in the future where we have to handle this new threat.
• The fallen were never made into guardians. And we have the inner monologue of the traveler so we know it chose to stay and fight. We also have an eye witness account in the form of Rasputin who literally says the traveler saved all of humanity on its own while he sat and did nothing.
