For me, the big difference in vanilla D1 and vanilla D2 is that in D1 I felt powerful, and felt I was welding powerful weapons. D2 has some cool weapons but D1 had so many more. Moreover, with D2, not only to you get to use your abilities less, when you use them, they don’t seem all that powerful.
