I absolutely adored playing with the sniper rifle in D1. It didn't take a ton of skill to do well with, but it was so satisfying to use. Sniping was by far my favorite part of playing PvP in D1.
Now, in D2, the questionable decision was made to move snipers to the heavy slot, forcing you to choose between the sniper and rockets (or sword)... easy choice. Especially because there are no maps that are even half the size of the biggest maps from D1. On top of being team-shot from full health to dead in probably less than half a second, coupled with the ridiculous flinch from every bullet while ADS, Bungie has successfully made the sniper absolutely useless in PvP.
This is such a huge disappointment because not only did I find it incredibly fun to play as a sniper, using the sniper also allowed for a lot of individual skill to come out which is completely absent in D2. It doesn't matter how good you are, if the match ends up being 2 on 1, you are effectively screwed. In D1 you always had a chance to pull off a nice snipe and bring the match to a 1 on 1 with your teammates watching, hoping you'll clutch the game for them. Harnessing individual skill is something desperately missing from D2 and the sniper play from D1 would be a huge step in that direction.

10 RepliesDidn't take a ton of skill? Really? I tried snipers and I found them to be super frustrating to use. That only made getting hard scoped at mid to close range by someone that much more aggravating. I'll be completely honest as a filthy PVP casual D2 PVP is much better. So, sorry to you guys that liked to sniper camp and shot gun rush, but D2 is the rise of us filthy casual team shooters.

1 ReplyWanna know why Hand cannons and snipers suck now? Because you were so happy with the Palindrome / Snipe meta in D1.
-
Snipers are useless in general you mean??
-
They’re useless in PVE too.

2 RepliesThing with power ammo in PvE is that it's unavailable, for the most part. Drops like confetti when you have a full inventory, is non-existent when you'd like to use some... Why can't we have synths back? I have a lot of shards, glimmer, weapon parts... what self-respecting battler of The Darkness leaves his/her ship thinking, 'well I have my sniper but I've no bullets for the -blam!-ing thing!' Btw the NM sniper is great, even if the ammo inventory is 'balanced' so you never ever have that much of it to use the thing when you'd really like to. Makes no logical sense and defies justification...

12 RepliesMore like a lot of people weren't as good with Sniper Rifles as they thought they were after playing Destiny 1. All of that AA, quickscoping and lack of flinch spoiled them. On a side note, the New Monarchy Sniper Rifle may be the best one you could use in D2 since it comes with Snapshot, a low zoom scope, and lack of reticule bounce when strafing.

While I don't necessarily see the sniper as completely useless and have had some success with it in pvp, it certainly feels horrible in comparison to the experience D1 offered and both snipers and shotguns are plainly underpowered compared to rocket launchers / swords. I'm glad others feel the same about this and about how D2 fails to reward individual skill nearly as much as the first game.

They are still good. I just don't think they are power ammo good. They need a slight damage boost or have more ammo.
-
Yep. Agreed.

Change to energy, limit ammo pickup amount.

Snipers are useless period!

4 RepliesYou don't need a sniper rifle to "harness individual skill" in PvP. Equip a high impact scout rifle, put a long range scope and show off your skill, if you want something similar to that sniper role. In fact that'll showcase your skill even further, because it requires you to land more than one bullet. And you can still use a sniper, you just can't use it as your "primary" weapon for kills in D2 (i suppose you could, if you just chased heavy box spawns the whole match). It sounds to me that a lot of people are just upset that they can't use a OHK weapon the entire match. I don't mean that as an insult, it's just what people gravitated towards in D1. It's what a lot of people are going to gravitate towards in most FPS games. Hell, I was guilty of running around with a Universal Remote shotty and a sniper rifle in D1 and had a blast. But I also love the state of Autos and SMGs in D2. So you can showcase your individual skill by adapting to a different type of game and using a variety of weapons to beat the Mida/Uriel/Sword meta.

5 RepliesSnipers were great and rewarding! Now no one has the skill to use them

Everything right there is true people!👆👍

7 RepliesThe decision to make them a power weapon is not questionable at all. In fact on a stream or podcast mid D1 one of the devs said that was a hotly debated move in D1. But in most games one shot kill weapons across the map are and should be power weapons. Also part of the issue in D1 as you also mentioned is that they were not hard to use at all. They were too easy to use for years. They were pretty much primary’s lol. So they earned the flinch in D1. Now that only one person gets power ammo perhaps the flinch can get toned down. Apparently they’re much better on PC. Along with everything else it seems. Why aren’t more people mad about that? It’s kinda crap they got a superior version of the game.

1 ReplyGreat isn’t it, not many shotguns either, or hand canons 👍
-
Personally, having used snipers in trials, I think they're more useless in PvE than PvP but are at a significant disadvantage in PvP nonetheless.

1 ReplyMaybe on Console but on pc my god, Have you seen Krafty

Edited by Divine_Majin93: 11/12/2017 5:43:17 PMI like how people always say that good snipers are still good. Being good at sniping is a matter of personal skill. Any decent player will tell you that snipers, while powerful, are just not acceptable in this balance. This is primarily due to map size and balance. If you're facing a coordinated fireteam, that sniper isn't gonna save you from a teamshot. Sniper glare also gives you away. Only an idiot or an overly cocky player would engage a sniper perch. Especially in a teamshot meta. Kill a sniper's friends and then team rush him. You can't snipe 4 people at once. And don't use the youtube montage/streamer argument. You're watching a montage. Ask them how many matches it took for them to record that perfectly crispy head shot. Ask them how many matches it took to record that amazing crutch play. Very rarely do I see people using snipers in live stream unless they genuinely want to get sniper kills. And I didn't think D2 gameplay could get any more boring. But sniping slows it down even further.

-blam!- pvp, the real problem is that they suck in pve

Bungie has successfully made the sniper absolutely useless in PvP.
Useless for me and other middling PVP players. Useless for a lot of players that actually thought they were good snipers in D1, but were really just relying on all that AA and quick scope/no scope stuff. But definitely not useless for those that are truly skilled in the art of sniping. There are still players that wreck with them just like all the folks saying hand cannons suck in D2 don't understand that all the high skill players constantly use hand cannons. The issue is that the skill gap for effectively using a sniper has just been increased (perhaps significantly so). Those that thought they were awesome with a sniper in D1 probably just weren't as good as they thought they were. This is probably a good thing since in the hands of a really skilled player, a sniper is a real game changer.

2 RepliesI remember noobs crying to nerf the sniper, they got their way. All snipers suck, no more one shots to the grape.

That's what you all get for whining about shotguns so much.

8 RepliesThe maps in the game now are about the size of the smalles D1 maps. Why cant we get some big maps and make them 6v6. I love using the new monarchy sniper though. Too bad there is like 2 maps where you can use it. Vostok and the map with the caves and the castle.
