Can the Vanguards use all the classes?
I'm not much of a lore buff, just a little dabble here and there. I figured I'd ask, are we the only guardians that can use all the powers of the light? It seems like in the missions where we receive the light the mentors, especially Ikora, has a pretty good understanding of the powers. Didn't Ikora retell the story of the time she first called the storm? Or was that someone else?
I know Ikora is a voidwalker, Cayde is a gunslinger, and Zavala is a striker. I know other guardians have "main classes" if you will. I also believe based on the cult like following of the sunbreakers that Zavala does not have this power, despite being familiar with it.
I just feel like Ikora should be losing her mind over a guardian powerful enough to have claimed all 3 class powers, not once, but twice.

Guardians can learn how to use all three kinds of subclass energies as well as multiple Subclasses Zavala is a Defender and Striker and doesn’t seem to have bothered learning any other Subclasses (we know he doesn’t use Sunbreaker or Sentinel). Cayde can use Gunslinger and Bladedancer (we know he never learned Nightstalker but we don’t know about Arcstrider). Ikora can use Stormcaller and Voidwalker (we don’t know if she can use Sunsinger or Dawn Blade) So a Guardian can use whatever Subclasses they desire to learn. Some Guardians only ever learn one Subclass, others learn a few. Our Guardian is the only one we know to have learned every revealed Subclass for their Class so far, but it’s likely there are others

Yes all characters have access to the subclasses (not sure for the three new ones tho, but assuming yes bc we can see Osiris using dawn blade), they usually just main one like most guardians. Zavala can be seen as a striker in a cutscene and also dropping ward of dawn on the first mission.

It’s always been a bit finicky. Zavala I thought was a striker, up until the opening of D2 when he bubbles twice.

Also, Zavala uses the Ward of Dawn in the first story cutscene. EDIT: Ikora wasn't the first Stormcaller, Timur was. I got confused. My bad. She is a Stormcaller, though.

Think of it like this the most dangerous fighter is not the one who knows a 1000 different punches but the one that can throw one type of punch a 1000 times. Each subclass is just a fighting style that utilizes a specific light and has its own method to call on it. All three mentors mentioned how there are some subclass that not many guardians use because of the requirements need to be met to use it like the Sunsingers needed to hear the song that the sun sang, Nightstalkers needed to be fearless and pay the price, and Sunbreakers need a forge to call the Hammer. The vanguard mentors are considered the best of their respective class due to their experience, skill, knowledge, and accomplishments (except for Cayde-6 since his job is picked by a dare system). From what we know they have only shown to beable to use at least 2 subclass Ikora (Voidwalker &Stormcaller), Zavala (Striker & Sentinel), and Cayde-6 (Gunslinger& maybe Bladedancer since he's good with a knife).
