Have you checked vram usage at the time that this occurs? I know the 970 suffers when more than 3.5gb is allocated. It could start allocating that part (last .5gb of memory) that has severely reduced bandwidth, and once it does it could continue allocating that memory. Basically, a 970 is a 3.5gb card, and if allocating more than that, there are severe frame drops when using the last .5gb of memory.

I was curious about this as well. According to gpu-z i'm not using enough vram for it to be an issue (usually 2500mb). Seems like it's got to be some type of internal leak.
