I am a casual player.

In D1 I logged less than 1000 hours, never reached max light, was not a pvp beast and did not raid a bunch. So I am probably one of those casual people bungie is trying to cater to. But even I am disappointed at what this game is. They made it far to easy in every aspect. Unless something changes, even I, a casual will stop playing soon. And that's a shame because I really loved D1.

  • On the discussion of the loose definition of a casual, I'm not really sure where I fit in. I started playing Destiny 1 on the second week after release in Year 1, I have logged 2139 hours of play, I have 30 VoG completions, 100+ CE completions, 2 KF completions, 5 WotM completions, I've been to the Lighthouse a few times, and I played in every Iron Banner. (And I was one of the morons that foolishly didn't buy the Gjallarhorn when Xur had it for sale the first time in Year 1. LOL ). I did everything there was to do in Destiny and had all 3 characters at max light level when Destiny 2 released. I was still playing Destiny almost every day, and I played that way for the 3 years that Destiny was out. (I'd likely still be playing it if Destiny 2 wasn't out). I am not nearly as good as lot of you (probably most of you), but I am a lot better than I was when I first started. I still have to have help from better players on all of the raids except CE. I can't make it through Trials without help from better players, but I do my best and try to be an asset to my fireteam. The guys that I started playing Destiny with way back there (my original clan) were so much better than I was/am, and they all told me that I was a casual player, so I had always thought that I was a casual player. At least, up until I read this thread and saw what a lot of you consider "casual". Like I said, I'm not as good as most of you, and for what it's worth, my D2 k/d is only 1.02 currently, so I'm not sure where I fit in as far as what type of player that I am or what most would consider me. Not that any label affects me one way or the other, but I thought the whole conversation was interesting. I am currently playing D2 almost every day (except this week, and I am working on installing new flooring in my house, so that has me a bit preoccupied this week). I play every Friday night with my clan. I am still currently enjoying D2, but I see where and how many of you are displeased with it. I am hopeful that the current incarnation of D2 is a base platform that they will build on. Having said that, I am not bored with D2, and I still enjoy playing it. I wasn't looking for D2 to be the same as D1, so a lot of the changes are interesting to me, and many took some a bit of transition as I was used to how D1 worked. I am probably one of the very few that actually likes the 4v4 Crucible, and I seem to do much better at it than I did in D1. (I did start out with a MIDA, but it didn't take long for me to switch to a Nameless Midnight. And I love my Tractor Cannon. LOL). I do think that Bungie has some work to do on this game, but I am not unhappy or bored with it at this point. (That is not to say that I won't be at some point, but I am hopeful that they will build on what they have currently offered). I certainly respect the opinions of everyone in regards to what they enjoy in a game whether they are parallel or opposing to my own. It is concerning that so many people seemed to be displeased with this version of Destiny. I have always enjoyed this community, and it was really a new thing for me when I started playing Destiny. I'd never seen anything like it before, and I really enjoyed it (and still do). I actually never really enjoyed FPS games as much as others (like the Diablo series or Dragon Age, Mass Effect type games), but Destiny brought something different to the table for me. I was hooked. Obviously, most of you enjoyed the game in a similar fashion, and based on a lot of the angst I've seen on the forums, you're not seeing what it was that drew you to the original game in the current version. Since I do still enjoy the game, it sort of added to that "you're a filthy casual" moniker that I had thought that I was given. (That makes me laugh to read, which is not to intended underplay anyone's grievances with the game). Sorry if that was a long post. I tend to talk a lot (or so my clan mates tell me. LOL). I normally don't post in the forums, but this was an interesting discussion that had some constructive conversation.

        • I still have yet to see all the disappointment in this game that everyone is getting out of it. I still play this game every week with my group of friends and it’s just as fun as it used to be. I just don’t see how it’s as bad as everyone is saying it is.

Reading your first paragraph, you don't sound a casual player to me, just a normal player. A casual player would likely be someone who pretty much deserts the game after finishing the story missions, perhaps fleetingly trying a few other game modes. Then perhaps logging in sporadically to try a few other things, if at all A hardcore player would play the entire game, or almost the entire game, to death, leaving almost no stone unturned

            • Nah, you're definitely not a casual. I barely broke a thousand hours, never reached max light until year 3, rarely went into PvP and raided as much as I felt like it, but I know I wasn't casual because I stuck with it and played the hell out of the game when I did for three years. And let's face it, the fact that you're here posting on the forums means you're not a casual.

            • I don't mind if the game is easy, I just want activities to do. Sure there are things to do but nothing feels motivating. I don't play games for challenges or for bragging rights, I play them TO HAVE FUN! If there is no fun to be had, I can't enjoy it. That goes for a lot of people.

            • Watch these two Old Demos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIp7vZuYzoA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTfhrONAp-c (got to about 2:00) When Destiny was first being shown off we were promised a Large Shared World Shooter RPG. That was "Ancient Fantasy" + "Hard Science Fiction". That is what it was initially advertised as and what Year 3 D1 was shaping up to be. The problem is that Destiny 2 has taken the franchise into becoming a game that I simply did not want. We got a standard FPS Skill based shooter with PvP set as end-game. It is trying to use the Halo formula to satisfy the competitive shooters. That design choice does not work with Loot based games. You're fighting against human players in the Crucible and you're fighting an army of drones in PvE. What makes PvE fun is being a powerful badass what makes the Crucible fun is the competition and proving your better against a real person with access to the same weapons abilities. They're not the same and should not be balanced as such. It is trying to be a jack of all trades but consequently making it a master of none. There are games that do what Destiny does, and better. Making it a competitive PvP is the opposite of what Destiny was supposed to be and shaping up to be by Year 3. This feels like a slap in the face to the people who stuck around and supported Destiny. Bungie should stop trying to make it Halo when that is a completely different formula. PvP does not work as a core aspect in Destiny. They took what could have been an amazing RPG and made it a simple shooter. Big middle finger to the fans who made the first game successful. People are not happy because Bungie is leaning towards making a standard shooter rather than deliver on the Epic RPG that was originally promised. The developers needed more time to deliver the game's scope and depth that they originally intended to make. Destiny is made by AAA developers, supported by AAA publishers, and is sold as a $60 game. They already have the money and support they need to make a complete product. The fact that it is not a complete game at launch, and is in reality an incomplete foundation that relies on content updates as well as paid DLCs to add things that should have been in the game in the first place, is unacceptable.

              • I've never before seen a game that attempts the hybrid of catering to casuals and hardcore players, yet utterly fails on both fronts. PvE lacks substance. So much so that you can get nearly max out by joining Public Events. There is no grind whatsoever and therefore no incentive to do much of anything in the game. PvP tries to cater to casuals in that skill gap is removed and you will win any encounter so long as you shoot first or you have a teammate with you. Yet it is the more hardcore players who benefit from this because unless they are complete potatoes, a 4-man fireteam is going to mop the floor with randoms much easier than in D1. If it weren't so sad that they botched this franchise so badly, it would be almost comical. How they missed and disregarded so much of what the community wanted. We wanted more options. We wanted separate PvP and PvE balancing. We wanted stronger primaries to counter strong abilities. Instead, we have the most restrictive gameplay mechanics. Fully integrated PvE and PvP balancing. Completely nerfed abilities and skill trees. No customization. All the good aspects of D1 were thrown out with the bath water.

I've had to stop myself 3 times in the past 30 minutes from ripping my already barely functioning controller in half from this absolute garbage excuse of crucible full 4 man fireteam running away like pussys everytime they're about to die V 4 man team of solo players or me by myself when I get matched with a 3 person team and they all leave

Sad thing is i was just running strikes in d1 rather than doing it in d2. Its solar burn so i was having a ball nuking everything. Everything in d2 is a bullet sponge while our weapons and abilities feel weak. D1 strikes had burns , strike scoring, strike specific loot and random rolls. I cannot fathom how the frig they screwed up d2 so badly. Moments of triumph was going in the right direction. i thought it was common sense to build upon what they had already established but no.....they threw everything they learned in d1 right out the window. The d2 dev team needs to be fired.

                            • You've played for about 5 days of the about 50 the game has been out, you're not a casual. Sorry. The casual is someone who's probably at about 1 day of game time since this has been out. It's someone who picks up the game and plays it an hour or two per session once or twice a week.

                              • I as well logged about 1000 hours and I would say i was casual. Raided a bit, played PvP here and there and farmed and did strikes but not hardcore all the time I’m just a dad with kids that play outside and I played games. This game is so casual that after 100 or so hours it’s boring as hell.
