The Problems with D2 from the Dev's End Are Bigger Than You Might Think

As a developer IRL I think know the serious problem Destiny 2 is facing right now from the dev's end. They threw away so many core features (either due to time constraints or by choice) and took FAR too many risks with overhauling various designs and systems. It ALL backfired and now there's no feasible way to "fix" D2 in a "reasonable player's timeframe". You can't just "patch up" the core issues plaguing D2. The only REAL "fix" to D2 is a complete OVERHAUL BACK to D1 Y3's design (a core release, not expansion) - and that is going to take a LONG time to code. This is the hard truth that the Bungie devs are quietly panicking over and why they've been so silent with the player base. How do you tell a player base of millions that you royally -blam!-ed up, the already-coded DLCs are going to be the same hated design, and it's going to take a year or more to code up the game they expected? If you have the answer, I'm sure Deej and Cosmo would love to speak to you right now. EDIT: For the record, I’m not defending Bungie. My post is to offer an explanation to the situation D2 is in from a developer’s perspective. Luke’s blatant disregard for player interests and Activision’s restrictive contract are not being overlooked by anyone here.

  • I did not expect them to release D2 so obviously unfinished. $100 bungie and this is what you put out. Shameful

    • If you are a real software developer then watch "GDC 2015 - Destiny, six years in the making" and you know why "going back to D1" is not only not possible but also the reason why D2 was developed as a MVP ..

      • I don't care if they are bigger than I might think. I just want them to fix the endgame while I play Fortnite, so i might get back into Destiny soon. With the current and only reason to go back is just cosmetics I don´t give a damn about their game anymore.

      • I appreciate this post, explains a lot in simple terms. Doesn't bode well for the future of D2. Not feeling the love bungie. Friendship endgame not such a great idea huh. Static rolls on everything not so well thought out huh. Didn't learn much from D1 or the community now did we. There will be loot, same shit for everyone after they finish the main (short) story. Sorry no pity here.

        • The Witcher 3 goty edition is downloading as we speak, 4 hrs a week is all D2 is good for. Bungie are out of touch with their player base by a long margin.

I'm not so sure that Bungo's as worried as everybody wants to believe. A 50% drop off in sales and a loss of over two million players would be catastrophic to most games, but Destiny 2's scummy and manipulative game design will more than likely ensure that they land in the black. I'm not defending Bungo here by any means, I'm just being realistic. Despite lower sales than the first game, Destiny 2, unfortunately, still managed to sell quite a lot of units. Couple this with the myriad of players who've undoubtedly purchased microtransactions—and will continue to purchase microtransactions—and the fact that they know that everybody will return for the subsequent DLC releases, and you'll find that Bungo's not worried. They're fucking laughing. They've found a way to get people to buy a low cost, low quality, totally sub par product, and all of its stripped away content at a higher price than a full price game.

I tried so hard to like D2 but it's just so -blam!-ing boring. Luke Smith is an absolute idiot. VoG and TTK doesn't compensate for the pile of shit D2 is

Well, as a show of good faith, you fire the idiot that keeps saying "I think we did the right thing". When it's obvious to the vast majority of the gaming community that they did the wrong thing, that statement is extremely offensive. How stupid do they think we are? Once that's done, come clean on everything. Tell us you f'd up big time. Tell us you know you didn't deliver the game that was promised. Tell us that you're making changes at Bungie to better serve the community. We might be willing to be a bit more patient with them if we see positive changes to their management. Right now, if they said that, we wouldn't believe them. Someday, they might let Luke Smith out of his cage again to wreck Destiny. One good expansion does not make up for the worst sequel in video game history. Also, half of us still haven't forgiven him for taking away our Vision of Confluence and Fatebringer, he should have been fired back then. Once all that is done, tell us what features will be restored in which DLC. That way, the players that want certain things restored can wait until the DLC that offers the restoration they want comes out. Not that hard. It will take a while, but it's not difficult. Bungie won't do it though. They don't know how to communicate. So, they'll probably just go out of business instead of doing what needs to be done.

              • All they really need to do is stand up and admit they -blam!-ed up, go back to supporting D1 with live events and fix D2 with time. Returning money from Season Pass purchases would also be nice.

                • Does bungie know how much money they lost? D2 was a fail, bungie made their money based on D1 when D3 comes out there will be lots of un-bought D3 games due to the failure of D2 and D2 cant be fixed anytime soon. It would take years to decode this game. R.I.P D2 your developer's messed up hard.

                  • Everything will come back again, Bungie just got way too greedy this time. No way this is what they did in three years. Over half the game is cut out and is going to be sold as addons.

                  • At this point it isn't about Bungie suddenly making all the changes the community wants all at once, even this community understands these things don't happen overnight. But its about acknowledgement and acceptance, just hearing Bungie make a comment, one single comment that they intend to do something would be nice.

                    • Luckily for Bungie then crucible numbers are now down to significantly less than a million and PvP is only just holding onto over a million. At this rate of fall. There won't be a playerbase or community to keep their design failures secret from.

                    • Exactly. Its way too far gone. Maybe they should have listened to the real feedback given during the beta in July and all of the idiots saying “its an old build! Things will be fine at launch! We dont have our light yet!” should have stfu and been honest about that garbage ass beta.

Honestly, unless you know their codebase, you can only speculate. We have no idea how each system they created correlate/inherits with each other. We can’t really make any assumptions at all unless we actually work and code for Bungie. Also, I can tell you now that they’re not panicking. You make it sound as if they have to make every change in one go and push a patch update to each platforms to see how it works. Nope. If they’re like every other software dev company out there, they have/do two things: - they have a source tree of some sort - they probably use Agile/scrum With that being said, there’s nothing wrong with them creating another branch on whatever source tree they’re using and working on fixes/improvements there. There’s nothing stopping them from making a build on said branch and having QA check it out. And they’re probably use Agile. What big software dev company doesn’t now days. This is why they’re not scared. You’re only scared in programming if you’re overwhelmed. Agile prevents that. Each feature is probably assigned to a sprint, once it’s done. There’s QA and regression and on to the next one. Really not trying to attack you and really not tryna to say you’re wrong. Also, really not defending Bungie’s back or anything, but with you being a software dev, you should know and understand this since you actually have the knowledge and experience. Also, this is coming from someone who does project management in a game dev company. Even though it’s a really small one, the idea is still the same.

                        • Some of the decisions are just so odd. People were loving the changes to Y3, it felt like the game had finally reached its potential. Strikes had a purpose with the strike specific loot introduced in Y2 and then the bounties were added last December. The raids had gear with perks to help benefit you in the raid. You were able to purchase faction weapons and everything wasn't left to rng. Most of all they took away options. I can't pick a strike from the director screen. I can't redo old missions unless Ikora thinks it's cool. I'm forced to play random roll crucible with gametypes. I can't just join a playlist of clash or control. My biggest issue right now is the lack of options.

                          • Destiny 2's code is not a complete redesign. Most of the code is the same as Destiny prior to the TTK. Pretty much everything was streamlined for time and speed. No more many calculations for weapons as they have set numbers. No more networking issues in the crucible with less players. The graphics engiine didn't change. Even many of the playable areas are like reskins of Destiny one. The physics are the same. Raise a hill here, lower a bit there. Add on top of that that most of the visual effects are comparable to destiny one prior to the rise of iron. Thats why you don't see armour effects and even fancy background effects like was in rise of iron. Its why the game also maxs out at 30fps on consoles. They could have easily put a null/void placeholder in for the emote and replaced it once it was fixed, instead they cancelled trials and let the glitch go on for the rest of the game. Whats really wrong with D2 is the lack of farming. Any farming. Farming required exploration and encounters. Farming for materials and weapons as well as collecting shards and glimmer. Destiny 2 made everything so easy, that it was rediculously easy. Need a public event?, instead of riding around in search of one, all you have to do is fast travel anywhere and your there. Destiny 2 was meant to be a casual game for casual players. Not a MMo crossbred like D1. So, they got their wish and all the criers from D1 who thought it was to hard should be happy campers. The real test of D2 is when it comes out on PC's and we get to disect the code and see exactly what engine its working on. Thats when we get to see if Bungie has been honest or if the entire Destiny community has been played.
