The Problems with D2 from the Dev's End Are Bigger Than You Might Think

As a developer IRL I think know the serious problem Destiny 2 is facing right now from the dev's end. They threw away so many core features (either due to time constraints or by choice) and took FAR too many risks with overhauling various designs and systems. It ALL backfired and now there's no feasible way to "fix" D2 in a "reasonable player's timeframe". You can't just "patch up" the core issues plaguing D2. The only REAL "fix" to D2 is a complete OVERHAUL BACK to D1 Y3's design (a core release, not expansion) - and that is going to take a LONG time to code. This is the hard truth that the Bungie devs are quietly panicking over and why they've been so silent with the player base. How do you tell a player base of millions that you royally -blam!-ed up, the already-coded DLCs are going to be the same hated design, and it's going to take a year or more to code up the game they expected? If you have the answer, I'm sure Deej and Cosmo would love to speak to you right now. EDIT: For the record, I’m not defending Bungie. My post is to offer an explanation to the situation D2 is in from a developer’s perspective. Luke’s blatant disregard for player interests and Activision’s restrictive contract are not being overlooked by anyone here.

    • Yeah I expect the September 2018 release to be the big update that probably fixes a lot, like TTK was for D1.

    • Luke Smith has to leave or be fired from Bungie ! They could bring forward the next DLC to give us some extra content while working on free content for later, they could include PvP menu and include other play modes from D1 using old maps if they have to. The yellow planetary missions should have high end rewards - newly designed ones and they should be ranked up in difficulty levels to chosen by menu. They have to bring back variable perks on all weapons and armour and make those perks dynamic, make sure ammo is abundant for ALL playable content, lack of ammo does not introduce excitement or tension, just frustration at the game, and is another indication that you have not got it right ! Take the Mida out of the game, including it in D2 was an idiot move! They have to do more to ensure PvP and Trials is much more fairly balanced/ matchmade and for rank noobs not to face seasoned veterans... I have seen your patent document about matching low level players with vets to induce them to make in-game purchases to progress, and it a vile move so don't go there! They need to sort out the glitching raid.

    • I agree with your assessment... but I think the coding would take less time than you anticipate for one reason: they have it written for Destiny 1. It wouldn't be from scratch.

            • Simply putting in random rolls on all gear would go a long way in D2. I'm sorry, but I don't see that as a huge problem to fix. Also adding different mods. That's probably fairly easy too.

                • Hmm, it looks like this is a little oversimplefied. Maybe it's part a performance/resource issue?, keeping support for all those weapons/ perks etc. seems like a nightmare for performance/resources. WIth all the new improvements to D2 (it looks stunning) something had to give... The timer on the nightfall for example is a different beast, they would have to have known that some players would like it and others would hate it, this would be pretty easy to fix. Don't forget the overhead when programming, everything programmed has to be tested with every change, that is a lot of time.

                    • I’m a Casual and I’m LOVING Destiny 1 + 2. My journey started with D1 three months after ROI came out. Loved it and still play D1 crucible and strikes!! Now let me say I understand (to some degree) the issues of Hardcore players and how D2 caters to the casual. I get it.. it’s a mile wide and an inch deep type of deal. I get it that there’s 82 things wrong you want to point out... I mean hey it’s a free country and free speech and these forums are here to spark conversation knowing the Bungie peeps are lending their ear whether we believe that or not. BUT The point of my post today is to hopefully bring to light the positive things I’ve got out of this game. In light of all the constructive and some not constructive thoughts being put out there I wanna focus and shift our attention to what I have gained! All my opinions take em or leave em just sharing =) 1. Connected with my old college roommate who now lives far away from me through Destiny. We play strikes, campaign together. 2. Was able to connect with another college friend who lives an hour away from me. We would have never connected if it wasn’t for Destiny!! 3. I don’t have many friends close to me who work in my field and play console games as well so Destiny has helped me not be a loner! 4. Video games are an escape for me after a busy day! Destiny fulfills that need for me! 5. I GUESS what I’m tryin to say is the real reason I’m overlooking all the valid comments of everyone talking about how they are logging off D2 is that man... the real reason I log into to D1 + 2 (day after day without having the full armor set from Iron Banner. No Uriel’s gift, no origins story, never had a win in trials, never completed a D2 raid. Only completed one in D1 lolol ) ** is to mainly connect and talk with my friends. ** ( Sound off the “friendship” comments lololol ) I love the grind TRUST ME!!! Once I got the nameless midnight I FREAKED OUTTTT BUT the need for friendship for me weighs far greater than the grind itself Take that for what you will Destiny Community but just sharing a - confession of a casual player - So grateful to be apart of the Destiny community Love y’all -burgy

                      • Last night, after having a couples’ night out, my neighbor and I played some Destiny. I felt sad. The movement was so much more crisp. You just simply feel a part of something bigger. Went into the Crucible, I sucked mainly because the controls he has set are different from mine, and there wasn’t much time for adapting. BUT IT WAS STILL FUN. I can’t believe they unnecessarily removed so much stuff...so much SIMPLE stuff.

                          • "As a developer in real life", you are making some pretty big assumptions with "the problems with D2". Your post assumes ALL of the D2 changes backfired. Your post assumes a complete "overhaul" is required. Your post claims that Bungie developers are "panicking" over these "hard truths". You claim Bungie "blam!-ed ups and that their code is "hated". Here's the thing: The ONLY thing I have read from Bungie that acknowledges a significant change needed in D2 in TWAB is the need to provide more endgame content for players that rapidly consume the content. That's it. You may be a legit developer, but in your post above you're just another ranting, frustrated fanboy hating on the game. Yes, if Bungie acknowledged all of your dislikes of the game, the changes would be significant. But that Bungie acknowledgement is just a figment of your imagination at this time.

                              • I like D2 as it is (game mechanics) except for: 1) inventory hell (constraints, micromanagement). 2) lack of content (maps, story presentation). 3) lack of character customization (no character editor at any time). 4) player search for public events. I am too often alone. How is it possible to be alone when you fly from orbit to a public event ? Besides, public events should be larger events with more players like in other MMO.

                              • This is precisely what I have been saying. Destiny 2 cannot realistically be fixed. Destiny 2 was flawed from a PHILOSOPHICAL standpoint. Everything they did to Destiny 2 was based on the philosophy that there would be high demand for their competitive and balanced PVP, and that people would go play PVP rather than look to play the PVE endgame over and over and over again. They believed that those who DID stay and play the endgame PVE would be content to do so for what amounts to nothing more than bragging rights (cosmetics). And there is just no easy fix. Destiny 1 could be improved over time because the premise of the game wasn't flawed. The premise of the game was mostly sound, and it was just Bungie's execution that was lacking. Things were tweaked over time (I would say for the worst, but even then, the game never became, IMO, unplayable as D2 is), and they added content, and for the most part, Destiny was in a decent place when the sequel came about. Destiny 2 is philosophically a traditional shooter game in the mod of CoD or Halo. And that deviates dramatically from the philosophy of D1 which was intended to be an MMO RPG Sci-Fi Fantasy Adventure game with looter concepts and played from an FPS perspective. The sad part here is, I don't think they can go back. With how poorly D2 has gone thus far, the PVE community has been extremely alienated from the game, and once they leave, they likely won't come back. That will leave nothing but PVP players playing the game for the long haul. Seen it before - games like Halo or CoD have a core of about 120-200k dedicated players who hang on for a year or so, and that is the only people Destiny will be able to market the game to in the future. In Essence, unless something DRAMATIC happens, this game's doomed to become a standard shooter game.

                                • My question is how do they fix this now? I love destiny but can’t see me doing much more with D2. I am in complete disbelief that this has happened to my beloved game. I think they wanted a bigger player base by making things more accessible but it backfired because all the hardcore players that kept the game alive are not going to stick around for this. Furthermore the target demographic will bail eventually leaving them with no one but occasional bargain bin players. Can’t believe someone thought this was a good idea.

                                  • It’s obvious destiny 2 was created to fulfill a contract . It was extremely rushed to make the date. I’m sure of it . There is no explanation . The token system was easier and they’ve put every live even on the token system . 4v4 across the board is easier . Reskin of weapons is easier. It was due to a time constraint . Activision said it was to be released by September and bungie had to deliver .
