The Problems with D2 from the Dev's End Are Bigger Than You Might Think

As a developer IRL I think know the serious problem Destiny 2 is facing right now from the dev's end. They threw away so many core features (either due to time constraints or by choice) and took FAR too many risks with overhauling various designs and systems. It ALL backfired and now there's no feasible way to "fix" D2 in a "reasonable player's timeframe". You can't just "patch up" the core issues plaguing D2. The only REAL "fix" to D2 is a complete OVERHAUL BACK to D1 Y3's design (a core release, not expansion) - and that is going to take a LONG time to code. This is the hard truth that the Bungie devs are quietly panicking over and why they've been so silent with the player base. How do you tell a player base of millions that you royally -blam!-ed up, the already-coded DLCs are going to be the same hated design, and it's going to take a year or more to code up the game they expected? If you have the answer, I'm sure Deej and Cosmo would love to speak to you right now. EDIT: For the record, I’m not defending Bungie. My post is to offer an explanation to the situation D2 is in from a developer’s perspective. Luke’s blatant disregard for player interests and Activision’s restrictive contract are not being overlooked by anyone here.

  • Anyone old enough to remember games that didn't have online play, DLC's, or PVE? The first "Resistance: Fall of Man" comes to mind. Man that was a good game. Mind you, back then you paid $60-$70 for a game that had 30-40 hours of gameplay, enjoyed it & finished it. Gradually, the games evolved into finishing the game, and then the option of re-doing it on hard mode, or re-doing it but keeping your endgame abilities and stats. Ah the good old days.

    • I would love a refund on the DLC if it was possible but I like many others who loved destiny 1 has already got the £90 version. That is why we will not see big change in the game til DLC 3 when they need to actually promote the content to sell it, they got our money for the first 2 never again am I pre ordering a destiny game don`t even think I have equipped the sword & not having Coldheart would of at least give me something to go after. #BUNGIESSHITSTINKS in the worst possible way

    • Very valid points. But I guess I’m amongst the outliers who is willing to ride this out. I enjoy the shooting mechanics and as long as that is solid. I’m ok. Plus I’m a gamer. I play GAMES. Not just A GAME.

      • I'm playing D1 right now. And here's my thought. We loved D1 BUT had a LOT of crying regarding the lag and all the bullshit. 1 Shot Ted. Red Bar Warriors. Raid glitches. And so they dumbed down the entire game

        • Tbh the fundamental problem lies with them developing for the PS4/Xbone, and not concentrating on a PC only release. Just like Destiny 1 was held back by PS3/X360 development.

          • Well the fact that the DLCs haven't come out yet means that they can still change them and add in things that should be present. Such as heroic strikes and strike specific loot and other things that should be present. Think about what happened with the taken king, they COMPLETELY changed how light, the leveling system, and weapons worked. They still have time to make changes like that. I understand that they can't change how the core game works, but things like cool down times being too long is as simple as changing a number. Weapon variety can be done by creating other versions of the guns that already exist, these would have different stats that were set but are still the same gun. Example: there are three versions of Uriel's gift. One is the one we know, the other two are the same gun in terms of stats, name, and appearance, but all the perks are different. It's not random rolls, but it's something that can be done without changing the games mechanics.

They need to change alot of UI elements. Remember back when we could choose to play whatever PvP playlist or strike we wanted? Remember back when vendors actually sold stuff to you and not just engrams? Im at my glimmer cap because theres almost nothing to spend it on now. Also they need to make the weapon infusion system to where you can use anything you have as long as its in the same weapon slot. Get rid of the shader system altogether and replace it with a color pallette. And bring back Combined Arms. Yes thisll take awhile to code but the experience will be better. I guess its too late to put dedicated servers in the game....

            • Destiny 2 has work to do and I'm not going to pretend that there aren't glaring areas that need to be better, but this post is pretty far off the mark on it's overall point. The fact is that Destiny 1 was built on a foundation that was broken and it led to a spiral of changes necessitating other changes and a lot of broken/disjointed play and balance. It's actually pretty hilarious to read posts begging to go back to what we had in year 3 of D1 because it was probably the most hated iteration of the game, but suddenly it was the golden age through the rose colored glasses of time. Destiny 2 needs more weapon/gear variety/customization and it needs a real PvP aspect and not the 4v4 shell that exists. If you think that they need to scrap all their systems and designs to go back to the broken AF D1 systems, then I'm not sure what game you were playing last year or now.

So you’re a dev huh? Riddle me this then my good sir. What is an enumerator and when would you use one when referencing a first person shooter? Bonus question: how many cameras are involved when making a character in a first person shooter? Why more than 1? Edit: These are FPS programming 101 questions. Let me know if you want a harder one.

                    • D1 was successful because their where weapons and armor that made activities worth doing. That’s literally all they need to do to fix it. PvP on the other hand needs to have multiple ways to play. 4v4, 6v6, rumble oh and dedicated servers for -blam!-s sake.

                    • I'm fine with Destiny 2. It's a cool game; you can run around on planets using your space magic and space revolvers to get rid of pesky space aliens, and then when you're done you can dance.

                    • For the most part, I like the way the game plays. Destiny 1 got stale after a while, this game is a lot less about ability spam and more about shooting and maneuvering. It seemed like in D1, more than 50% of your deaths in PvP were from Supers, Grenades, Energy and Heavy weapons, and Melees. In D2, its almost completely opposite, most deaths come from primary/energy weapons. I'm not saying its perfect the way it is, but its at least not as broken as D1 was. D1 balance in regards to competitive play was a joke by comparison. Whether people like it or not, D2 is better suited to a competitive environment. It just needs more support for it to really flesh itself out.

                      • I already expected this wouldn’t be a quick fix. Since I don’t agree with the decisions Bungie has made for whatever reason, I moved on. I’ll keep an eye on (the lack of) communication from Bungie. I’ll try out the DLC as I’ve bought them already. I’ll never pre-order any more games from Bungie though..

                      • Yea D2 isn't as good as D1. I can put D2 down for a few weeks while I go to work and not miss it. D1 I had to bring my Xbox on the road to play the iron banner and not miss the Xur exclusives. D2 doesn't hold me like D1 does and unless the DLC fixes the issues they will loose me to the next game that replaces Destiny... Hello Anthem

                        • I understand that OP. It does seem pretty obvious that D2 is not going to be fixed or improved to the extent we all would like to see any time soon. Just begs the questions? Why the hell did they screw Destiny 2 up so badly. Who in there right mind would ever think that D2 was on point at release. Decisions made on this game cannot be explained. Just the general population can see its garbage so why on earth did the Dev's not see it? There is undoubtedly some hands tied behind backs when it comes to decision making within Bungie, its plain to see through the game that has been delivered..... It really is pants......
