No seriously why? All of you Year one veterans should know how bad D1 was initially. Yes Destiny 2 is bad right now but still better the D1 until the HoW.
EDIT:I didn't notice till now but this list is based off what I can recall in the forums in 2014 before TDB came out sorry for confusion on that part. And I don't have much on PVP because I personally didn't play it much in D1 till HoW if you have something for either list I will add them.
If you need reminding here's a list of all the Bad stuff first:
-The only way to hit max level was to do the raid or IB (Not to sure on IB kinda skipped the first few) and have a fullish set or mix and match with an exotic.
-The grind to get exotics of the original 19 or 21 exotics at the time even to get the quests for Thorn, pocket infinity, or super good advice.
-You had to level up all of your gear then use materials to purchase the upgrades unlocked (I didn't mind it but I know how many of you despised it)
-Material farming either planet, class specific materials, weapon parts, and ascendant materials
-PVP balancing hand cannons were broken so was vex and apparently Hunters in general because roaming supers and ranged melee. Yes I know there were legitimate problems with Hunters back then with glitches
-No ghost shell selection unless you pre-ordered and got the frontier shell.
-No emotes at all, you know what I mean.
-A very open ended story that everyone thought was non existent, it was there people just didn't listen or read dialog still bad not defending it just hate people saying it.
-There were barely any legendaries compared to D2 since side arms, grenade launchers, linear fusion rifles, sword, and smgs did not exist. Not researching but going off memory D1 had about 9 weapon types and armor pieces so 5 each vendor had one set excluding crucible and vanguard who had 2 sets of armor and the raid armor so that's roughly 45 armor pieces per class in total and 63 weapons im including IB/ Destiny 2 legendaries from factions and engrams not eververse I dont want to include ghost shells or weapons because there is 13 weapon types and there are 12 factions 12 for gunsmith weapons that aside some don't have certain weapon types so forget that math, but for amror each faction this time has one set and engrams have 2 sets (for hunter errant knight and road complex for example) so D2 has 70 armor pieces for each class to get. For those of you wonder its EDZ, Titan, Nessus, Io, vanguard, NM, FWC, DO, IB, Ikora, Crucible, and the Raid. We
-Public events were worthless to do only gave rep but you could a few strikes in the time it took to wait.
-Rahool decrypting lesser quality gear from engrams before being taken out back by the Devs.
-Vault space
-Nightfall kicks to orbit. Don't dare defend this one EVERYONE DID HATE IT.
-No strike variations they were added in TTK by that I mean like Nexus Mind only being versus Vex instead of vex or maybe taken for example.
I think that's it for the negatives feel free to correct me or tell me more I will update the list
Now Positives:
-Loot caves
-Shaders not being consumable
-No class specific weapons. Yeah weird thing to put but some people don't like the idea.
-Ranking up vendors felt more rewarding yes ironic despite less gear but it was much harder to get so it balances out.
-Warlock self rez saving wipes
-Nightfalls not having a timer. A lot of the community orbit wipes back or without orbit kicks just no timer so I will mention it in addition to no timer.
-Vault of Glass raid not loot table that's a mixed bag of both
-Our guardian talked. I see it as a positive I personally don't like being mute but to same it was a negative.
-Xur had more importance.
-Iron Banner had levels instead of chance to get gear from faction package
I can't think of more for positive from VANILLA D1 I will add more if told about more.
So Yeah anyone who keeps saying D1 vanilla was better needs to remember how limited we were back then with being rewarded or meaningfully activities to do. If you read all that and got here thank you if your just skipping to here well thanks for looking anyway.
I really don't want to write a D2 list since everyone has already like fifty+ already I do think getting tokens is fine since you could dump it all a certain characters instead of three separate grinds to level factions.
-
You had a reason to grind for what you wanted. You get lucky and get the vex then great, good for you. I just think they should do it for fun. Make like 2 or 3 exotics really good but not tell anyone which one and let people figure it out
-
Because people choose what they remember. I think if we went back through this forum or went to reddit you would see that way more people were pissed at D1. The one amazing thing it did have was a really fun raid. I'm sure almost everyone would love VoG to return. The guns were fun too. People really forget how awful the grind was for the sake of grind in D1 vanilla. The resource farming, gear levelling, etc. With that said I think bungie went too far removing all the grind from the game, rolls were kind of fun.

4 RepliesBecause in d1 vog was a great raid and had the most powerful weapons destiny has never had. D2 raid is barley ok and the weapons are ok as well.
-
Euphoric recall.
-
4 RepliesSorry dude, 2/3 of your negatives are the positives that everyone misses.
-
1 ReplyCompletely disagree with pretty much everything you said. Vanilla D1 was not without its faults, but I was having a lot more fun than I've had in D2. You can't compare a game that actually had an end game to one that doesn't. And return to orbit nightfalls were far better than this timed, die as many times as you like, bullshit we have now. Honestly, even calling them nightfalls is a joke.
-
3 RepliesI prefer a nightfall orbit kick than a shit timer
-
4 RepliesBetter PvE and better PvP. If you're part of the minority that hated the meta in Year 1 then it's understandable why you'd prefer Destiny 2.

1 ReplyI haven't seen anyone say D1 Vanilla was better; just that D1 had 3 years worth of refinement and QoL updates that made it better. I kinda feel you've selected 1 argument from a tiny amount of people and tried to make a compelling argument, essentially bullet proof an argument just so you can be right. Opinions aren't fact. What I will say, D2 has a number of things I would have loved in D1 Vanilla. Lost Sectors are a nice way to break up the monotony of Patrol. Public Events are easier to track and are far more regular. But, I miss having to level up your weapons and your armour by playing the game. Pretty much everything about D2 isn't fun or engaging. You can argue the strikes are better in D2 over D1. How? Neither have interesting mechanics. Exodus Crash is a shambles of a fight. All of them are just bullet sponges with no way of doing damage other than shooting/abilities. D2 has a few things going for it but D1 was also great in its own way. Much like those who compare Destiny 2 to Destiny 1 Vanilla to try and defend this lack lustre release, this is a shambles of an argument. Destiny 2 has stripped away a lot of the systems Destiny 1 had that created Incentive to replay the game. That's why Destiny is a better game than D2. D2 has made almost no improvements and seemingly has Zero ambition in making a better game. It's more interested in stripping away parts of the game to then shove them into micro transactions.

Seriously d2 is way better -
Sorry but i preferred Destiny 1 for all it's faults and shortcomings and stuck with it for 3 years. I cant see myself playing Destiny 2 beyond this week, that's just the way it is.

I largely agree with you. Two things I really like about D2: not being kicked out of my menu anymore while flying in my ship and fast tracking on the maps. I hated being kicked from my menu while I was in my character screen! One thing I think they did poorly in D2 was give exotics away like candy. When one can get nearly all the exotics in the first few weeks, the incentive to play is lost. On the other hand, it took me eight months to get my gjallarhorn in D1. I thought that was stupid long and it was very frustrating. I have hope for D2 and think many of the things people complain about can be fixed. But I feel the frustration. After three years of game development and beta testing, it really shouldn't be two steps forward and one step back. It should be three steps forward.
-
21 RepliesIt shouldn't be compared to vanilla d1, they had 3 years of ideas and experience to work on.
-
1 ReplyEdited by IceLantern: 10/21/2017 9:45:49 AMSome of the things you considered negatives I actually consider positives and vice versa. I like the grind, I like feeling like I earned what I have. I don't care about things like ghosts and emotes.
-
9 RepliesWe had powerful weapons and abilities then. We don't in D2. That's all it took for me.

1 ReplyDestiny Vanilla was garbage. This game is infinitely better. Rose-colored lenses. D2 has done a LOT of things wrong and it’s currently a worse game than y3 D1. But Vanilla D1 was ridiculous.
-
11 RepliesEdited by Bieltan: 10/21/2017 11:28:12 AMDestiny 1 made you grind your tits off to level weapons. Thats what kept people busy "Great I have all these guns and armour pieces! Now I need to do loads of bounties and strikes and shit for XP and I need to farm planetary mats and ascendant mats to upgrade them..." Gjallarhorn took a weeks worth of bounties to upgrade 😩
-
One reason that makes d1 vanilla better for me is that I kept playing when i had the chance. Unlike d2 wherein I log in to the tower to get stuff the clan engram and i go play something else.
-
10 RepliesNot gonna read the wall of text.... It's worse because I'm bored and stopped playing already, with D1 I always kept playing, because there was always something to play for!
-
5 RepliesPeople look at age of triumph destiny and then at vanilla d2 They’re not a fair comparison
-
1 ReplyDay 1 player. Simple answer D1 out the box was 3 times better than D2 out the box. Maybe in 3 years this game will be better, right now as is its bad. I spent countless hours on 1, im bored already on 2. No grind, same weapon rolls. Crucible is boring, i cant pick my game mode. Raid is utter trash, not even doing prestige...no reason.
-
2 RepliesIf your comparing launches then yes destiny 2 is better but as of right NOW destiny 1 is waaaaay better. Honestly they should have just made this game a dlc and brought destiny 1 to PC.
-
1 ReplyI wasnt here vanilla D1 but from what I heard. D1 might have had little content but it was sure fun and worth the grind

Yeah this game sucks
