The French. They also designed the worst measurement system known to man. Metric.
-
It’s much better than the American system that arbitrarily picks amounts to make up units
-
False. They were not picked arbitrarily.

Explain why it’s 12 inches in a foot 5280 feet in a mile 8 ounces in a cup 3 feet in a yard. I could go on and on. Everything in metric is base 10. Simple, and elegant.
Explain why it’s 12 inches in a foot 5280 feet in a mile 8 ounces in a cup 3 feet in a yard. I could go on and on. Everything in metric is base 10. Simple, and elegant.
There are twelve inches in a foot because 1 foot is 12 thumbs long. A mile is 5280 feet because it is 8 furlongs. It used to be bigger when they were Roman miles, but the English decided to change it to 8 times the length an oxen can pull a plow without resting. Don't even get me started on fathoms. Saying a cup is 8oz is arbitrary in itself because 1 cup is a metric measurement equivalent to 250ml or 1/4 of a litre. And a yard is three feet. It doesn't need an explanation. But, for shits an giggles hold your arm out, and a yard should be about from your outstretched finger tips to the middle of your chest. Base 10 math is cool and all, but basing an entire measurement system on water, then arbitrarily deciding it should be calculated from 10, is a terrible system.
-
Well our whole number system is base ten, so that’s not very arbitrary.
-
Where did the 10 come from? What is the reason it's based on 10 rather than a number that would lend itself better to calculations?
-
10 is the best number to depend on for calculations. What’s 1075643921/10? Just move the decimal place to the left by one. Makes conversions extremely simple. That’s what a base 10 number system is.

Damn it france

Coming from a guy using gallon lol

Coming from a student born n' raised in 'Merica... Why the -blam!- did we not use metric.
Coming from a student born n' raised in 'Merica... Why the -blam!- did we not use metric.
Patriotism and cost.
-
I know we don't because to replace everything now would be wildly expensive, but we should've used it from the very start.
-
That's the "I'm the best this works -blam!- yeah murica" patriotism part, the big metric switches happened during the cold war too where everyone was extra patriotic
-
Yeah and now we suffer every time in literally any science class when we have to convert from inches to cm or F to C.
-
That must suck, I find it annoying to translate into imperial to talk to Americans to stop them going "wuts that" and making commie jokes but you actually need to do it for marks
-
Marks? Wuts that? Anyway yeah I wish that at least with all things math/ science the whole world was on the same page with units. But America is probably one of the worst with knowing foreign things, from geography, to being mostly unilingual, and only knowing customary system.
