After EA focus tested Viscerals' single player Star Wars action game it was decided the game wouldn't do well enough at retail and now Visceral will be closing its doors forever.
It joins the other studios EA has sucked the life from before casting them aside.
Maxis (SimCity) - Purchased by EA in 1997; shut down in 2015. [Though EA says the "Maxis" brand will live on, the main studio is officially no more.]
Mythic (Dark Age of Camelot) -Purchased by EA in 2006; shut down in 2014.
Bullfrog (Syndicate, Dungeon Keeper) -Purchased by EA in 1995; shut down in 2001.
Westwood (Command & Conquer) -Purchased by EA in 1998; shut down in 2003.
DreamWorks Interactive/Danger Close/EA Los Angeles (Medal of Honour)- Purchased by EA in 2000; shut down in 2013.
Phenomic (SpellForce, BattleForge) -Purchased by EA in 2006; shut down in 2013.
Black Box Games (Need for Speed, Skate)- Purchased by EA in 2002; shut down in 2013.
Pandemic (The Saboteur) - Purchased by EA in 2008; shut down in 2009.
PlayFish (The Sims Social) - Purchased by EA in 2009; shut down in 2013.
NuFX (NBA Street) - Purchased by EA in 2004; shut down in 2007.

3 RepliesA company buying up businesses, eventually stripping their assets and closing them down, thereby ultimately profiting from their demise, is a decades-old business practice. Happened a lot in the UK in the 70s, which went on to have destructive ramifications for UK industry In the same way, you can see how EA has to some degree decimated the development landscape over the years for their own gain, regardless of whatever PR excuse they promote

5 RepliesUnfortunately Bioware is probably next. They make good games, but EA has ruined them. EA is the worst.

EA isn't in the business of making great critical darlings we talk about for years just as Michael Bay isn't in the business of making great movies. EA wants to make games that can maximize profits in the short term. What EA looks at in a game is: How do we extract money after the initial purchase? Loot box? DLC that locks major content? Day 1 DLC that locks huge parts of the game? Sell the base game as a vanilla product and complete it with one or two season passes? They also follow short term trends. Creating the trends is too risky. It's best to follow them and make money off what is currently hot. Rockstar, Blizzard, CD Projekt - these are publishers that focus on high quality products and deliberately aim for quality to be associated with all their products.

Edited by Vicex: 10/20/2017 12:12:32 PM-blam!- I’m more annoyed this is about moving away from a story-base game to presumably another Ubisoft-style ‘open world’ game.

Unless Anthem is good (it will 100% be ruined by microtransactions) Bioware is next. Rip in peace.

1 ReplyBioWare (KotOR, Dragon Age, Mass Effect) - Purchased by EA in 2008 - shutdown pending

Pandemic (The Saboteur)
Yes, let's forget the original Battlefronts, Mercenaries, and Full Spectrum Warrior.

3 RepliesEdited by garycomehome72: 10/17/2017 11:33:49 PMIf ea didn’t purchase pandemic we might have had a real battlefront 3.

Edited by SpookyClassified: 10/20/2017 1:23:10 AMPandemic's Mercenaries was great, I hated to hear when that studio was shutdown.

Ya I was looking forward for that new star wars game but now not so much thanks EA always trying one up Activision on who the shitties game company is.
-
2 RepliesStill need to play dead space 2 and 3. Though from what I hear and read dead space 3 wound up becoming not what they wanted thanks to EA. Shame because what they had planned sounded memorable as hell.

The lose of Westwood is the most saddening one
-
Bioware will be added to that list soon enough RIP
-
3 RepliesWish they buy Bungie some day.
-
Not a big deal imo. We had no indication another dead space was ever coming. And considering how shit 3 was and the way it ended i'm not sure any continuation from that would have been worth getting anyway.

6 RepliesI am very very scared for Titanfall devs.

Edited by Rhynerd: 10/17/2017 10:38:58 PMSo many companies that thought they could love a little longer with the help of EA. Too many companies that have died under EA’s care...

I wish dead space was on ps4
