Why beloved Iron Banner failed

[EDIT #2 - We are growing even more! And we may just get a Bungie response. All that we wish to know here is if you understand what the community disliked about the new Iron Banner, and if you intend to make changes. D1 wasn't made great in a day, but if we work together and listen to each other we can make Destiny 2 even better than its predecessor. Lets make Iron Banner the first great step!] [EDIT- This post is gaining momentum, I'm glad to see that people can talk about this without attacking each other. It's very out of the ordinary for a Bungie.net forum post!) First, I would like to point out what I believe made D1 Iron Banner seem so rewarding ( I know, I know. D1 Fanboy alert) then compare it to what made the D2 version lackluster. In D1 players could grind to rank 5 throughout the week to get their gear, and once they did hit the level cap they could still grind out Iron Banner for a chance at the ship, or the gear they missed out on the previous Iron Banner. Simple as that, something certain to work towards with rewards here and there to keep the grind fun and worthwhile. From what I have gathered, there are two main issues contributing to peoples dislike of the new iteration of Iron Banner, that work together absolutely horribly. 1) The token system. The new system seems have to brought along with it, the death of post game drops. Now players have to acquire 20 tokens to recieve one single random package from Lord Saladin. The feat of acquiring these tokens varies from person to person, when playing with my clan it took about 4-5 games, when playing solo it usually took about 7-8. Upon turning these tokens in, players seem to most likely either recieve multiple sets of duplicate Iron Banner pieces or none at all. Whereas in the past, A player knew they were going to get, say, the arms at rank 3 and the chest at rank 5. They had a set goal to pursue. Meanwhile, as the player chased rank five they still had the chance at getting a weapon or ship at the end of a match, making a string of losses much more bearable. Now, they must win multiple matches for a single chance at getting something. 2) Fixed weapon perks I'm not here to argue whether this was a good or bad decision to make in the grand scheme of the game. But it certainly doesn't work when it comes to the new Iron Banner token system. As I stated above players are now more likely to get duplicates as well as non Iron Banner gear whilst participating in the event. This hurts even more when you turn in your tokens only to recieve another "Better Devils" that is in no way any different than the past 17 copies. If we still had randomized rolls and the player got their 18th "Better Devils" but with a god roll, it would certainly hurt less and wouldn't make grinding those previous matches feel completely unrewarding. (I don't know if Better Devils is actually in the loot pool, I was just using an example weapon) I'm not saying it's impossible to get the full set of gear, I'm one piece away. But that leaves another problem. Previously in D1 players were restricted to a select few pieces of available gear each event, I enjoyed this as it kept me coming back to Iron Banner each month to collect the whole set. Now if I get the whole set within the first week, what will be the point of participating again? The gear most likely won't change until the next DLC, leaving me nothing to chase next time around. Hopefully Bungie as thought of this and next month will have a new emblem or something. (Before people accuse me of rushing through Iron Banner and non stop grinding for the gear I'll say that I've gotten very lucky and need only the chest piece after 8 packages.) Personally I'm having a good time playing Iron Banner when I'm with my clan. And my engrams have been lucky. But, I will say that I and what seems to be most of the community will agree that the reward system was a step in the wrong direction. I understand that Bungie has to try new systems to keep things feeling fresh, but this just hasn't worked. They tried something new and it didn't go so well, these things happen with games. This is their first attempt at Iron Banner in a new Destiny, we can hope Bungie has seen the feedback and will make changes to make the next one great. I've seen a lot of people saying the same thing on the forums, but they all come across as whiners. Hopefully my wall of text has gotten the point across in a more neutral way, and Bungie might respond.

 •
Are you done grinding planetary tokens for that armor you wanted? Are you done grinding the gunsmith for that rare gun you want? Are you done grinding the easy new raid for that armor you want because the raid guns suck? Are you done grinding the crucible for your Better Devils? Are you done grinding Trials of the Nine tokens because you can't go flawless due to sweaties? Well have I got the answer for you! Behold, IRON BANNER! (Now with 80% less iron) Grind endlessly for new Samurai themed armor and guns with an exclusive Iron Banner sticker, but with the added urgency of a limited event making you grind harder than ever before! Enjoy the absolute worse this game has to offer, with unbalanced teams, bad spawns, and meta players using the most broken weapons. Fight an endless war of attrition against camping Warlocks with infinite health, or get killed in literally under a second by the Last Word 2.0. Enjoy the endless droning of sirens as the clan you solo-qued up against captures the entire map. Lose to teams with FIVE TIMES YOUR SCORE who have been spawn killing you for the past five minutes. Get killed by a rocket launcher before you're finished the spawn-in animation, or get cross-mapped by fusion rifles. Try to capture a zone while getting hit from 8 pulse grenades, which aren't at all over powered when compared to the other grenades. Discover how useless anything that isn't the meta really is, as you're killed by the Antiope, Uriel's Gift, MIDA, and Last Hope consistently. Learn how powerful Fist of Havok is as the only roaming panic-button super. Ask yourself why Bungie left the Hunter "Wombo-Combo" in the game, only to never use the wombo-combo again, as your super, Shadow Shot, is literally just Nova Bomb, but completely useless. Wonder what the point of player choice is, as you discover the "One Path to Victory" Shaxx is always talking about is simply playing the meta, with any semblance of skill optional. But how is this better than the Iron Banners of old? The only difference between Iron Banner and regular Crucible? Gone. That pesky lore of the Iron Lords nobody cared about? Gone. The uniquely modeled weapons of previous Iron Banners? Gone. The ability to buy items as you progress? Gone. The chance to get Iron Banner items as an post-game reward? Gone. The ability to re-roll weapons? (bet some of you forgot about that) Gone. The rewarding experience of obtaining high level loot and powerful items? Gone. All those toxic downsides of Iron Banner are now more dead than the Iron Lords. Instead, grind away for meaningless tokens for the RNG slot machine that gives no guarantee your time will be rewarded. Win low level gear and weapons with an exclusive Iron Banner sticker, with a Iron Lord's chance in a SIVA replication chamber of getting the new Iron Banner exclusive Samurai armor, which doesn't match the theme of Iron Banner one bit. Listen to Overwatch easter eggs that remind you of better games you could be playing, and end your week feeling hollow for spending all your time grinding for the armor you wanted, only to get an endless supply of Iron Banner themed garbage sidearms. Let us take a moment to thank Bungie for this event. This event that showcases every single flaw of Destiny 2. This event that showcases the faults of the Crucible. This event that showcases how unrewarding the game is. This event that has managed to royally piss me off. Thank you Bungie. P.S. I'm never playing Iron Banner again...until some stupid new gear comes out and I force myself to endure more of this cancer and rip my hair out.
