I think I fixed this by doing the following: Clear app cache & app data. In settings app, go to Apps & notifications -> App info, find the app, tap on force stop, then tap on usage and tap on clear data and clear cache. Then uninstall the app. When I later reinstalled the app it seemed to find my characters.
