Ok look, I already know this is gonna be a post that attracts a lot of hate so I'm asking up front, can we please just act civilly and respect each others opinions? On both sides of the argument? I understand why people don't like static weapon perks but I do and I want to talk about it.
1. Static perk rolls makes each weapon special.
In D1 every weapon had a description and a model with a unique combination of physical parts and colors, but ultimately most legendary weapons were nothing more then a set of stats made to act as a vehicle for whatever perks happened to drop. The perks might be good or bad or meh but there really wasn't much of anything that made that gun stand out most of the time. You could get another gun with similar stats and a similar perk roll and there would be very little to differentiate the two. Now every gun has it's own perk set, no other hand cannon has the same combination of stats and perks that the Minuet-42 has and that makes the Minuet-42 special. Sure the Annual Skate might come close but a few minutes of experimentation and the differences show through clear as day. Each weapon has something it does well, some play style it supports more than others. Remember the raid weapons from D1 that had static perk rolls? Each one was hand made to do something specific, to fill some roll. Now every weapon in D2 is like that, every weapon has something it does well, some play style it plays to.
2. Less farming.
I know some people like to farm and grind but I think even those people will agree with me when I say that trying to get a weapon in D1 with a perk roll you liked was nightmarish. Now there's no more of that, you get the gun, you look at it's perks, decide whether or not you like it, and you move on. Period, no bullshit. Once I get an Antiope-D I don't need to get another one just to have a good Antiope-D, I already got it.
3. No more God rolls.
Again, I understand that lots of people like God-rolls but in my opinion God-rolls are one of the worst things that can happen to a loot based game. They completely invalidate any sense of creativity of loadouts and can ruin both competitive and cooperative balance. No one should get an easy win in any game mode just because they brought the "right" weapon with the "best" possible perks. Now that's not to say that static perks will completely get rid of the problem of everyone using the same loadout but its way easier to manage and fix which brings me to my next and final point...
4. Balance control.
One thing that I think made D1's balance such a big issue, especially for PvP, was that I felt Bungie got too ambitious with their weapon system. Let's break this down, in D1...
You got 3 weapon slots
- Primary
- Secondary
- Heavy
Each slot had 3 or 4 different weapon types...
- Auto, Pules, Scout, Hand Cannon
- Shotgun, Sniper, Fusion, (Sidearm)
- Rocket Launcher, Machine Gun, (Sword)
Each of those weapon types had different archetypes which defined the weapons specialization; high impact / low fire-rate, low impact / large mag size, balanced stats, high impact / low stability, etc etc etc.
On top of that, every weapon type had a laundry list of perks the weapon can spawn which have the possibility of completely changing how the gun operates or what it can do; full-auto, explosive rounds, focused fire, grenadier, etc.
With all this in mind it's no wonder D1's PvP was an unbalanced mess most of time, trying to balance all these variables against each other must have been a nightmare! And this doesn't even include exotics.
Love it or hate it, you gotta admit that balancing weapons is going to be much easier for Bungie now. Once Bungie starts releasing balance updates I foresee both PvP and PvE becoming much more balanced much faster than D1 ever did.
People who complain on these forums always go on about how it's their right to voice their opinions, well it's my right too and these are mine. I just wanted to present some of reasons some people, like myself, might like the system the way it is and might not want it to change. Feel free to disagree with me, I'm open to having a civil discussion about this.
EDIT: Alright, message received, people do not like static rolls. Lets talk about some of the reasons why.
1. Nothing to grind for / No God rolls
Forgive me for being intolerant of other people's opinions on this one but in my opinion this is not a good enough reason. I'm sorry but I play the game to enjoy myself and that does not include running the same activity over and over and over again hoping to get that one gun I want with a specific set of perks only to be disappointing most of the time and feel like all my hard work has been for nothing. D1's grind was horrendous, maybe some of you got lucky often but my luck was terrible. It's become a running joke between me and my friend that he has all the luck whilst I get jack diddly. This is not acceptable, all players should have equal and reasonable opportunity to get what they want and in terms of weapon perks D1 did not offer that.
God rolls are bad for games. Period. Again, I'm sorry for sounding harsh but they are. They suck the life out of loadout building. Huge percentages of the community using or hunting for the exact same gun with the exact same set of perks does nothing to support personal play styles or creativity. Static perk weapons can suffer from a similar problem but it's way easier to manage than random perk rolls.
2. Loot pool is too small / Not enough diversity / Not enough interesting or unique perks
Fair points. I completely agree with these statements. Right now we can only hope that as D2 grows we'll see more new and interesting additions along the way but if we keep the discussion going maybe Bungie will start moving things around to make space for some new cool perks, or maybe bring back some old favorites that got left behind (Grenadier please). To quote AlieN_x_HuMaN
D2 weapons are point and shoot. That's it. It honestly doesn't matter what the perks on the gun are because none of them really change the gameplay or do anything other than inch the enemy health down.
I also like the idea of reaching a happy middle ground. EMUracing brought up some good ideas on this. Maybe what we do is have weapons with static perks but one slot is open to custom mods that have unique properties (grenadier, focused fire etc.). This would help keep the gun system more manageable for Bungie and provide a way for players to mix things up a bit.
After seeing the responses to this post and giving it some thought I've turned around slightly on wanting only static perks. It seems Bungie realized that they got too ambitious in D1 and doubled back trying to get a handle on things but in doing so went too far and made things boring in the process. I'd be very interested in finding a middle-of-the-road compromise that keeps things at this current manageable state and offers more diversity and unique experiences.
