Ok look, I already know this is gonna be a post that attracts a lot of hate so I'm asking up front, can we please just act civilly and respect each others opinions? On both sides of the argument? I understand why people don't like static weapon perks but I do and I want to talk about it.
1. Static perk rolls makes each weapon special.
In D1 every weapon had a description and a model with a unique combination of physical parts and colors, but ultimately most legendary weapons were nothing more then a set of stats made to act as a vehicle for whatever perks happened to drop. The perks might be good or bad or meh but there really wasn't much of anything that made that gun stand out most of the time. You could get another gun with similar stats and a similar perk roll and there would be very little to differentiate the two. Now every gun has it's own perk set, no other hand cannon has the same combination of stats and perks that the Minuet-42 has and that makes the Minuet-42 special. Sure the Annual Skate might come close but a few minutes of experimentation and the differences show through clear as day. Each weapon has something it does well, some play style it supports more than others. Remember the raid weapons from D1 that had static perk rolls? Each one was hand made to do something specific, to fill some roll. Now every weapon in D2 is like that, every weapon has something it does well, some play style it plays to.
2. Less farming.
I know some people like to farm and grind but I think even those people will agree with me when I say that trying to get a weapon in D1 with a perk roll you liked was nightmarish. Now there's no more of that, you get the gun, you look at it's perks, decide whether or not you like it, and you move on. Period, no bullshit. Once I get an Antiope-D I don't need to get another one just to have a good Antiope-D, I already got it.
3. No more God rolls.
Again, I understand that lots of people like God-rolls but in my opinion God-rolls are one of the worst things that can happen to a loot based game. They completely invalidate any sense of creativity of loadouts and can ruin both competitive and cooperative balance. No one should get an easy win in any game mode just because they brought the "right" weapon with the "best" possible perks. Now that's not to say that static perks will completely get rid of the problem of everyone using the same loadout but its way easier to manage and fix which brings me to my next and final point...
4. Balance control.
One thing that I think made D1's balance such a big issue, especially for PvP, was that I felt Bungie got too ambitious with their weapon system. Let's break this down, in D1...
You got 3 weapon slots
- Primary
- Secondary
- Heavy
Each slot had 3 or 4 different weapon types...
- Auto, Pules, Scout, Hand Cannon
- Shotgun, Sniper, Fusion, (Sidearm)
- Rocket Launcher, Machine Gun, (Sword)
Each of those weapon types had different archetypes which defined the weapons specialization; high impact / low fire-rate, low impact / large mag size, balanced stats, high impact / low stability, etc etc etc.
On top of that, every weapon type had a laundry list of perks the weapon can spawn which have the possibility of completely changing how the gun operates or what it can do; full-auto, explosive rounds, focused fire, grenadier, etc.
With all this in mind it's no wonder D1's PvP was an unbalanced mess most of time, trying to balance all these variables against each other must have been a nightmare! And this doesn't even include exotics.
Love it or hate it, you gotta admit that balancing weapons is going to be much easier for Bungie now. Once Bungie starts releasing balance updates I foresee both PvP and PvE becoming much more balanced much faster than D1 ever did.
People who complain on these forums always go on about how it's their right to voice their opinions, well it's my right too and these are mine. I just wanted to present some of reasons some people, like myself, might like the system the way it is and might not want it to change. Feel free to disagree with me, I'm open to having a civil discussion about this.
EDIT: Alright, message received, people do not like static rolls. Lets talk about some of the reasons why.
1. Nothing to grind for / No God rolls
Forgive me for being intolerant of other people's opinions on this one but in my opinion this is not a good enough reason. I'm sorry but I play the game to enjoy myself and that does not include running the same activity over and over and over again hoping to get that one gun I want with a specific set of perks only to be disappointing most of the time and feel like all my hard work has been for nothing. D1's grind was horrendous, maybe some of you got lucky often but my luck was terrible. It's become a running joke between me and my friend that he has all the luck whilst I get jack diddly. This is not acceptable, all players should have equal and reasonable opportunity to get what they want and in terms of weapon perks D1 did not offer that.
God rolls are bad for games. Period. Again, I'm sorry for sounding harsh but they are. They suck the life out of loadout building. Huge percentages of the community using or hunting for the exact same gun with the exact same set of perks does nothing to support personal play styles or creativity. Static perk weapons can suffer from a similar problem but it's way easier to manage than random perk rolls.
2. Loot pool is too small / Not enough diversity / Not enough interesting or unique perks
Fair points. I completely agree with these statements. Right now we can only hope that as D2 grows we'll see more new and interesting additions along the way but if we keep the discussion going maybe Bungie will start moving things around to make space for some new cool perks, or maybe bring back some old favorites that got left behind (Grenadier please). To quote AlieN_x_HuMaN
D2 weapons are point and shoot. That's it. It honestly doesn't matter what the perks on the gun are because none of them really change the gameplay or do anything other than inch the enemy health down.
I also like the idea of reaching a happy middle ground. EMUracing brought up some good ideas on this. Maybe what we do is have weapons with static perks but one slot is open to custom mods that have unique properties (grenadier, focused fire etc.). This would help keep the gun system more manageable for Bungie and provide a way for players to mix things up a bit.
After seeing the responses to this post and giving it some thought I've turned around slightly on wanting only static perks. It seems Bungie realized that they got too ambitious in D1 and doubled back trying to get a handle on things but in doing so went too far and made things boring in the process. I'd be very interested in finding a middle-of-the-road compromise that keeps things at this current manageable state and offers more diversity and unique experiences.

I think instead of having legendary mods only grant bonus of bonus damage, they should have their own perks built into them. For example: Instead of having a legendary kinetic mod that grants 5 bonus damage, you have a legendary mod that not only grants the bonus damage, but also grants the perk outlaw on that weapon. Same with the element mods. There could be a legendary mod that not only grants the element and bonus damage, but also dragonfly on that weapon.

Static rolls arent the MAIN issue imo. Its ok but we would need more exptics and lower droprates, u basically get an exptic for entering ur ship and two for landing on a planet, nothing to be chased. That beeing said i prefer randoms.
-
This is a pretty good poll.
-
I think limiting certain perk combo and making 1 static and one random perk would be nice, and update the mod system so it has meaningful bonuses. We play Destiny because we can feel like an all powerful space God. Not to shoot marshmallow at things
-
The problem with having static perks is that you need a large pool of weapons to keep it fresh... And there's just not nearly enough
-
1 ReplyI understand why they want static but I really miss the fact that you could get a gun that was perceived to be trash but the amazing rolls you got made it godly.

Please read the edit.

BOTTOM LINE ONLY Static rolls aren't a bad thing. It's a good idea. The problem isn't static rolls. The problem is the lack of weapons and interesting perks in the game. End of story. D2 weapons are point and shoot. That's it. It honestly doesn't matter what the perks on the gun are because none of them really change the gameplay or do anything other than inch the enemy health down. I am completely fine with static rolls if there are enough weapons to play the game to try and find. As it is now....that is most certainly not the case.

2 RepliesEdited by Philimanjaro105: 10/6/2017 3:58:37 PMChasing a God roll *was* fun. It gave the game more depth. Static gun rolls make the game almost as shallow as the dumbed-down subclass skill tree.
-
The problem with fixed rolls is that the shit guns are shit, and cannot be helped. As of right now, if we could get random rolls on guns, all guns could have the potential to be good (or at least viable). With static rolls right now there are only a few competitive weapons.
-
The problem is that an entire portion of what drove people to keep playing and grind was taken out for the sole purpose of Pvp "balancing." Near every change regarding super engery, ability cooldowns, secondary/energy weapon changes, and decreased ttk were dome just for Pvp sake. That's what pisses people off in PvE, because those players must suffer every weapon/exotic nerf to appease the Pvp crowd.

I'm ok with static perks as long as they actually make the gun feel useful or unique.

3 RepliesThere are things that I like about each system. Static rolls, give devs ability to tube each specific weapon. That's the only positive for me. Random rolls, give ability for variety on each weapon. As you plateau in power level, and have every weapon, this can give much needed variety in load outs. What I want is the ability to choose a mod or two that give me the perks that I want in a weapon. That really make the weapon work for me. Right now there really isn't a weapon that I really synchronize with. Using the mod system you can fine adjust the weapon to benefit your play style. It would give us the ability to have different weapons that may have low synergy, but can balance them so they work better together. Now, people will say that everyone will use the same frame and mods, etc... but it will really allow people to experiment with weapons that they have, and see what works better for them. Right now the mod system for weapons is a joke. Just the element is different. Let us choose a sway reducer to bring stability up (not counterbalance), or a firing pin hop up to increase impact at the expense of firing rate... The mods should need to be crafted, and be somewhat costly compared to element mods.

Without a larger pool to pull from static perks will suffer. There should be a large amount of standard legendaries to select from. I'm talking 100's.
-
6 RepliesA reason to play. That's what we want. Right now, there isn't a reason to play. In Destiny 1, there was a reason to play, to chase that god roll. If you have any ideas for some way to keep us playing after we've done everything, please feel free to share them. Random rolls was that way, and it worked beautifully. It kept us playing for 3 years. It's gone, we're a month in, and the majority of us are out of reasons to play.
-
The loot pool is far far far too small to justify static rolls.
-
Static perk is a good idea. Gives more personality to your weapons. Kinda of a "what you see is what you get" type of deal. Unfortunately, the mod system is where things get bad. I had high hopes the mod system would be the new RNG aspect in order to further customize your arsenal. But with the way the mod system is now and the laughably low amount of weapon diversity, static rolls became a detriment to the game.
-
I'm learning to like them, especially seeing that the devs are toying with the idea of time-locked/exclusive weapons like the faction stuff. These weapons that we are getting now may not necessarily be available in the future. They'd be treasures then. I grinded PoE for so long trying to get a y1 Highroad Soldier. (finally did)
-
When I had nothing to really grind for, grinding for good to god rolls was a reason to play. The static perks really hurt the faction rally, because there were no different rolls on the guns. You'd shard the next weapon if it was one you already got unless you wanted a copy. I didn't need anything else from FWC after I got everything there was to offer from them.
-
9 RepliesThey should have made weapon perks purchasable using shards which I have a ton and nothing to do with them. They could have been expensive too to make shards valuable currency. Now I don't mind getting 10 shitty purples cuz I need the shards. This way all perks are not a gamble and casuals can obtain them just by playing.
-
D1 was a loot based shooter. You can't have balance in a loot based shooter. The point is to grind for the best stuff. It's always about the rewards. D2 is a FPS nothing more now. Different games in my opinion. These tend to be dull and less exciting reward wise.
-
I can't see the appeal in grinding for hours on end just to get shitty rolls on your guns.

Regarding PvP i love the state of crucible now since team play matters and it was apparent to me that with good cooperation we managed to win 3 games in a row concerning control matches. It made me think that now you can really say that skill matters and not what god roll you have matters. Mida multi tool? No probs i can counter with nameless midnigh uriels gift old fashioned you name it! The issue here is in my opinion that if Bungie could seperate PvE from PvP then they could of balanced the game better even with random perks. Which means that in PvE you can have any perks you want and in PvP either aloud for crucible only guns to be used like any weapon drop from crucible will have static perks so they can only be used in Crucible etc. or simply not to allow to use all the perks of the guns in crucible in a way. That will leave random perks fans happier
