I mained warlock and despised hunters in D1, and same goes for D2 (that rivalry will never die). I just finished my hunter that I started two weeks ago, and I feel the need to weigh in on how it feels compared to my warlock.
Most of my friends who play destiny play as a hunter, and so I listened to their constant bitching about their class while I leveled my warlock. I thought to myself "man, the whiny crybaby hunters are back."
When I started out with arcstrider. OH MY GOD IT WAS PHYSICALLY PAINFUL TO PLAY. The jump is something I can get used to (glide > double jump), but the abilities are just GARBAGE. Arcstrider has no grenade selection and the class ability dodge is mediocre at best and has a ridiculously long cooldown. The cool down needs to be cut in half or maybe more. Then there's the super. What a piece of shit that is. The only thing good about it is that the hit detection has crazy range. The mobility of the super is garbage and the damage it does to big enemies is a bit sub par. My highest complaint is that it's not arcblade from D1. The ability to knife around the map more than made up for any lacking part of that super.
Moving on to gunslinger. This is much better than arcstrider, but still isn't great, especially considering that I feel like I can never use the super. I'm terrible with hand cannons, so unless the target takes up half my screen I miss all of my golden gun shots. I know I can't be the only one who can't use glorified mega pistols, so this super alienates anyone who fits this category. I can deal with the super however because it's good for bosses, but once again, NO GRENADE SELECTION. The best grenade hunters have is the swarm grenade (unless you're good with tripmine), but swarm grenades barely do any damage. The highlight of this class is definitely the throwing knife, but that serves almost no purpose in PvP.
Now onto everyone's favorite, nightstalker. Although I prefer the play style of gunslinger, nightstalker is simply too useful to equip anything in it's place. The super if great, other than its hard to hit a small target (like another player in PvP) directly, and that it seems to shoot slightly off center from where the target points, other than that, super is great. Smoke bomb and invisibility dodge are cool, but these have way too short durations and are overshadowed by, once again, NO GRENADE SELECTION. Voidwall is garbage, spike is unusable, and vortex is like solar grenade, but with less damage and a lot less range. Orpheus Rig makes up for the shortcomings of nightstalker, making it as viable or more as any of the other classes' subclasses, but now I don't get to choose which exotic I'm using.
Keep in mind while reading this that I don't like hunters, I main warlock. Even so, I want the game to be fair. Class usage should be roughly equal, but warlock is overwhelmingly the favorite right now (and rightfully so, it's a little too good at the moment).
To fix this, give arcstrider tons more mobility while in super, closer to arcblade. Decrease dodge cool down by at least half. Replace all of the grenades with some useful ones.
Right now, hunters are so weak that anyone seriously claiming that their abilities need a nerf should be banned.
The only thing about hunters that needs a nerf is their appearance. They are far and above the best looking class in the game, but in their current state, they need every bit of reason to be played as they can get.
I haven't yet had a chance to play titan, but if it plays like it looks, it'll be tons of fun.
Thanks for reading if you made it this far,
Comment your thoughts below!
Edit 1: I'm getting lots of comments agreeing with me (especially from hunter mains). Several people have pointed out that golden gun does really well against Calus in the raid. I've yet to try the raid, so I'm going to have to trust them on that.
Edit 2: I just had another idea about how to make dodge relevant. What if they made invisibility an intrinsic part of its functionality. That perk could be replaced with something more useful on nightstalker, dodge would be viable, and the cool down wouldn't need to be changed. Comment what you think of this idea!
Edit 3: Woohoo! Trending on the "Classes" sub-forum. This is my first trending post ever, so thanks guys!
Edit 4: I forgot to mention the fact that some of the hunter upgrade paths arent even worth spending the upgrade points on because it actually makes the path worse. Ketharuil brought this to my attention in the comments and gave moebius quiver and the gunslinger 6 shot perk as examples. I still think moebius quiver is useful in the right situation, but the gunslinger 6 shot perk is downright unusable

2 RepliesToday I'm moving from Arcstrider to Striker, mainly because PVP ...

I hate the fact that gunslinger melee and tripmines got a huge nerf. The tripmines do not kill anymore. With the setup time and the short stay time, they suck now. The grasp exotic that goes with tripmines also sucks. They took away the extra grenade and replaced it with...tracking? With a fire and forget, who cares? The knife precision shots also took a damage decrease as well to the point that it is blah. Also, with gunslingers getting no buffs to the useless dodge, the only reason to use them is the super.

Paired with Lucky Raspberry, and you have a solid grenade focused set up. Dodge cooldown is 24 seconds, 20 with +2 class ability mods. Cooldown is a non-issue in pve and Way of the Warrior. You can easily chain melee kills and dodge to clear out adds. For pvp Way of the Wind does a good job with additional cooldown through Focused Breathing. For both pve and pvp I always run Gambler's Dodge. Either way, having that instant melee recharge is always more useful to an Arcstrider than the reload. The Super is incredible with Raiden Flux. Easily the best in pve for clearing out majors or even targeting bosses. In pvp, you have to be smart and tactical about how you use it. My recommendation is defensively against players that want to rush. It definitely takes a bit of practice to learn how to use the dodge effectively along with slashes to close the gap. If you try a head first charge you will get shot down. But that goes for every melee-type Super attack. The one thing I think the Super needs is a bit of a speed buff.

Yesterday i had a Runs out of medal with the arcstrider. Try arcstrider with path of the wind and stomp ee5 and you can literally fly around the map. With this set you can also get faster during super and close the gap in very short time and while evading you gain less damage....

As a titan main I felt right at home with arcstrider since all of the titan supers are roaming supers. I didn't like gunslinger at first but I haven't ruled it out yet. I don't have night stalker yet though.

1 ReplyRivalry ... Lmao

Trying to not sound toxic, I would say class and subclass are personal. I main a titan and hated hunters y1. Night stalker in year 2 made it my second. One of the things I like about the hunter class is triple jump and feel quite the opposite about the warlock sit in the air and get shot at.
-
Hunter main here. Gunslinger, incendiary grenade. Also, throwing knives have an epic use in PvP. I use mine all the time. I even throw them cross map on occasion for clip hunting. I've gotten a few. But when I'm really thinking about using it, or I'm about to lose a close range fight, I toss the knife and get a kill. Most of the time it's a crit so I get my knife right back. I think you need to play it more before you write a review on it. I only bother playing my hunter and I feel it's on par with every other class. We need more recovery armors though. We all get sick of crouching in a corner for a full minute to get our health back.

Edited by Enochua: 10/10/2017 3:59:49 AMThere needs to be clear benefits and disadvantages from spec-ing into mobility, resilience or recovery. Just a thought but mobility should effect run speed to begin with as well as walk speed and jump height but also IN-AIR ACCURACY. Resilience should not only effect how much damage you can take or how much health you have but also HOW MUCH DAMAGE A MELEE DELIVERS. Recovery should not only benefit health re-gen but also ABILITY COOL DOWNS. And in doing this there would be a clear difference in classes "main" attribute, but people could choose armor that would help affect what they wanted to focus on.

My clan mates run hunters most of the time. I'm usually better with my Titan. Hunters are fine.
-
1 ReplyI'm a hunter main and i fine myself wanting to play my warlock mor then my hunter. You know how sad that is? Pretty -blam!-ing sad.
-
2 RepliesI think gunslingers need celestial nighthawk. It takes two shots out of three to kill a red-bar servitor. A red-bar servitor
-
2 RepliesJust made a topic on this but with Supers. Hunters effin suck in comparison to the other classes. No gap closers, without being shot dead like paper armor, Gunslinger has only 3 shots and you must hit the target. Warlocks have a good range ability, have more then 3 chances to shoot and has splash damage. Hunters are just gawd awful now, in fact I just stopped playing D2 as I was being destroyed by every other class in the Crucible. 2 times I used my super where I was just punched and died... really? Fix this crap already.
-
3 RepliesIf you equip the precision shot for golden gun you can absolutely MELT yellow bars so I think it's pretty useful. But yeah it requires a steady hand. Dodge is pretty bad tho I agree. Arcstrider is really good adclear cus the Melee can hit multiple enemies, but other than that yeah it's bad. BUT WHAT THE HELL TRIPLE JUMP IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN GLIDE I STARTED A WARLOCK AND WAS GETTING SO FRUSTRATED WITH GLIDE ITS CANCER
-
Warlock glide is bungie not knowing what to do for a third jump style. "Let's just do it like a titan, but worse"
-
I agree with you. I used to have a single hunter in D1, and when I played a hunter during the Beta i decided to switch to Warlock (My main right now). I recently decided to level up the hunter (Lack of things to do for the Warlock), and damn, was it painful. Even more irritating is the "Dodge", which is mediocre compared to the rift and shields from the other classes. In fact, is you play as a Warlock you get a midair dodge for free if you use the Dawnblade. And you are spot on with those grenades. It is underwhelming. The pulse grenade from the warlock actually takes out mobs of enemies, the hunters is very underpowered.
-
5 RepliesOnly here to state that Titans are the best.
-
3 RepliesArcstrider with radian flux decimated ads and bosses. Plus the roll to recharge melee, melee to recharge roll is op on pve. Golden gun bottom tier for critical damage with celestial nighthawk -blam!-ing destroys bosses. Nightstalker with orphius rig and bottom tier to tether enemies then hit them with another tether for damage is ridiculous. The only thing bungie have scaled back for D2 for hunters is crucible. They no longer dominate crucible with OP supers. Quit moaning about hunters just because you suck with them OP.
-
1 ReplyCelestial Nighthawk is what makes it useful on Calus. But uh... A single Pulse grenade from a titan with Magnitude is easier to land, takes less time, and deals more damage than the precision hit. I personally would love for Arcstriders to get Flashbangs over Flux grenades, and Nightstalkers to get Suppressions over Voidwalls.
-
2 Replies
The mobility of the super is garbage and the damage it does to big enemies is a bit sub par.
Try wearing Raiden Flux with arcstrider - You can whack away at damage sponge ultras for a LOOOONG time so long as the hits are rapid.
-
As a hunter main I 100% agree. While I'll say that Arcstrider is excellent for sweeping low-level mobs (that super has saved my bacon a few times in the story missions - not that it holds a candle to my old Bladedancer imo) it feels as though the abilities of the Hunter class in general were just... not thought about. The class as a whole is so underwhelming now - at least in D1 people could come up with a bunch of clever playstyles to take full advantage of what we did have, but it's like Bungie gutted everything that made us lethal and replaced it with garbage. For the first time in my Destiny history I'm half tempted to jump ship to Warlock, since at least my favorite class for them (Stormcaller) is still a thing.
-
4 RepliesIt does require a higher level of skill to be a successful hunter where as titans and warlocks are for the more casual player. Hunters aren't for everyone.

Mailnly because it actually takes skill to use now. I absolutely love wind walker, sprint to get dodge back and dodging not only quick reloads your weapon it also makes you harder to kill. Ummm yes please and thank you. and the flux chest piece which extends the duration of your super the more you kill. That thing will clear out entire sections of strikes by itself. Even the luck raspberries chest grenade rng is good. If I hit mobs in a clump I'm guaranteed a grenade back 90% of the time. The solar subclass was designed for hand cannons, and the hunter in general is now team supportive instead of being the selfish ass hat it was in d1. Chains of woe which is one of the best perks in the game to me reloads your entire fireteam faster. That's huge dps gains, and a must have if you main handcannons like I do or any slow reloading scout. Not even going to go into Orpheus rigs which have to be the best exotic piece of gear in the game right now. Sooooo yeah. I don't see the problem. *Edit: to those crying that arc strider sucks in pvp because you get burned down too quickly, try dodging instead of running straight at an enemy like a muppet. You may surprise yourself.

Gunslinger with Celestial Nighthawk is a monster. Helped a bro with the last story quest (Gaul). Hit him with a headshot when he had half health. It hit him sooo hard he glitched. He's supposed to absorb light thrice but GG killed him after the 2nd so although he died, he still ran back to his light platform thing but froze halfway through.

TLDR Yes, hunters have been -blam!-ed in the ass. I mained a hunter in D1, and I am totally enjoying warlock like no ones business.

2 RepliesEdited by StpME: 10/6/2017 1:03:10 AMas a hunter main its basically this: Grenades are balls nightstalker super is borderline useless in pvp arcstrider hit reg is buggy in pvp and sucks because of lack of speed to catch up with people class ability has 1/3 the utility of others VERY underwhelming abilities (COMPARE TO literally unkillable pve voidwalker) worst survivability worst utility, only nightstalker with rigs and nighthawk gg can make up for this but even this require the use of exotics to be subpar honestly just a boring and average class compared to the others :( this is why i changed to a warlock main this week and for pc in the future
