Psions are one of the most interesting facets of the Cabal and their lore. They're inteligent enough to produce the OXA Machine, tangle with Rasputin, and use psionic powers without the aid or blessing of either Light or Darkness. Destiny 2 for the first time gives us a glimpse into society within the Cabal Empire, and the Psions may also be one of the more unique and interesting aspects there too.

-Special Edition Booklet
Here Calus gives us by name 5 different races that compose the Cabal Empire. This means the Empire has at least 4 different species serving as client races within it. Despite this though, only the Psions have thus far been seen filling a military role alongside the Cabal Race. We are given whispers of Clipse and Sindu Shadows from the Raid Armor, but those appear exceptions while we see the Psions filling a pretty substantial role on every front. They appear in sizable numbers in both Destiny 1 and 2, and fill many specialist roles within the Cabal fighting force such as pilots and snipers. Why do the Psions enter military service in such great numbers despite no indication of them being a warlike people? The answer I believe, lies here:
She was called Otzot, freeborn Psion, and she glowed with the power of her thoughts.
-Special Edition Booklet
Be still. Your endless vigilance is done. Nothing will enslave you ever again.
-The Taken: Psion
When I moved to free the indentured Psions, I threatened Otzot's superior status as a freeborn. She joined the conspiracy against me.
-Special Edition Booklet
These quotes tell us a few things. First, Calus informs us Psion society has at least two distinct social castes, freeborn and slave. Second, Oryx's words tell us that if not all of them, a least a large enough majority of the Psions in the Sol System are slaves that the promise of freedom is a good catch-all during the process of Taking. While it doesnt confirm, it certainly implies Psion soldiers mostly, if not exclusively belong to the slave caste. Lastly, it tells us freeborn status is something to be envied and a goal within their society.
Now here's where the theory comes in. The Cabal are based heavily on Rome. It certainly isn't the exclusive inspiration, and it doesn't apply in all things, but its the best we have to go on. Now, the Roman Legions were comprised of citizens of Rome. The Legions were rounded out by attaching Auxiliary units. The auxiliary generally served as specialist units, and were comprised of subjects of the various provinces. In addition to normal pay, the reward for a full term of service in the auxiliary was roman citizenship. The Psions seem to mirror this and I think the reason the Psions serve in the Cabal legions in such high numbers, and why its comprised so heavily of slaves, is for a very similar reason. A term of service in the Cabal's equivalent of specialist auxiliary units earns them their freedom.

1 ReplyClips and Sindu were wiped out. The best warrior of both were made shadows. The almighty wiped them out. Arkborn got trapped while passing through and basically got blackmailed into working for Calus at the threat of extinction.

3 RepliesEdited by Master Squirrel: 10/4/2017 3:38:58 AMIt would be interesting to see a story line where a Psion born a slave had the chance to become freeborn while joining The Cabal Empire. While he/she joins, they fight a tremendous amount in wars across the galaxy and achieve success. They gain a Captain or General status among the campaign and enjoy freedom until The Emperor raids the Home World of this Psion and begs the Emperor to cease the annihilation of their planet. The Cabal Emperor becomes displeased and tell them to lead the advance or risk exile for the rest of their life. The Home world gets destroyed and the Psion sees their kinsmen get slaughtered in utter horror while the emperor sadistically congratulates the psion on a job well done but little does he know, the Psion, in his heart has turned against the empire and begins to plot a coup de atete to free their people from the dictatorship of the emperor. The coup fails and the psion escapes but finds out about these "Guardians" once the war against the tower starts. They somehow make a fatal escape from the legion and find a hurt Guardian at the beginning of the story of destiny 2 and helps him out of the rubble of debris. They both travel days on end to find shelter while the cabal Massacre everything in sight and eventually find Hawthorne. Hawthorne feels threatened and the Psion passes out. Our ghost provides an excellent explanation on why she shouldn't kill him because they helped us get through the days with superior geographical skill. She proceeds to take this psion to the farm and they all analyze this Psion on the hospice bed thinking it's dead bit little do they know, this is one of the most experienced military assets of the cabal empire. It wakes up while farm doctors ready to perform an autopsy and it grabs the nearest blade it could find due to PTSD and war nightmares seeking am escape. Doctors yell guardians and one comes through the door. They have one of the most epic cinematic 1 v 1 fights against a Hunter we have all ever seen with this Psion being highly superior in counters due to us just losing our light and grabs the hunters gun. Knowing the hunter just lost, the psion proceeds to look for an escape while pointing the gun around at everyone ready to kill but hesitant. The radio coms are calling for the hunter but no response and sirens go off on the farm due to Hawthorne suspecting this Psion is alive. The psion makes an escape through the nearest window while effortlessly avoiding all guardians looking for them. They enter in small room only to find hawthrone pointing the "Field Forged Shotgun" in it's face while calling nearby guardians to secure the objective. The other Guardians asked the Hunter what happened and proceeds to explain the superior combat prowess of this psion unlike anything we have ever fought before in detailed flashback sequences. The psion is now escorted to detention room in restraints while having flashbacks of the raid against their Home world and now sits in a room with Hawthorne and security watching him 24/7. This is the part where hawthorne tells our guardian to help the farm out in the EDZ while watching this Psion with maximum security until we get in contact with the Vanguard. Skip forward until the vanguard are re united at the farm and the cutscene happens at night where they are talking amongst each other about the cabal and specifically "The Psion". *Chicken included* 😂 Zavala goes into the detention room and walks back and forth behind in anger reasoning that we shouldn't have brought them here and should have killed it and that we put refugees in danger. Ghost obviously provides explanations on why it could help us and Zavala hopes ghost is wrong. He goes in the room only to see this psion sitting in the chair with its eyes closed and appears to be sleep. *Mediation* *Intense Rainbow six siege like music starts* He asks "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't kill you." *Psion says nothing* Zavala: "We have been at war with the cabal since mars and you have no right to be here. What does Ghaul want with the traveler?" *Psion looks up with unexpected but a menacing look of surprise* Psion: "Ghaul?" *In english* *Cuts to Hawthorne behind glass with other guardians* Hawthorne: "It speaks English!?" Psion: "What do YOU know about Ghaul?" *You as in Humans in general* Zavala: "Only that he wants to steal our light from the traveler." Psion: "I know nothing of your traveler but I do know Ghaul." Zavala: "Who is he!? What is his goal!?" *Psion closes eyes and Flash backs in mental depiction of The Almighty cutscene and music music starts* Psion: "The Almighty. He is the Beginning and the End. He is Alpha and Omega of the Empire. The Star Destroyer. The World Eater. He will consume all of the universe for power and you are no match." *Cuts back to room* Zavala: "What is your purpose here?" Psion: "Freedom." Zavala: "Who's side are you on? Do you serve the empire?" Psion: " I serve no one." Zavala: "You are a threat to all of us here and I will not let you go free!I would kill you with no hesitation if I had the chance." Psion: "I am not your prisoner. I only need time." *Zavala punches wall really hard and craters it* Zavala: "If you even think about escaping, I will come find you personally." Psion: "I know where Ghaul is." Zavala: "Where!? Tell me right now!" Psion: "You will need my help if you want to defeat the empire." Zavala: "You move, You die." *Leaves room and Hawthorne follows* *Cutscene Closes on Psion slowly opening eyes looking angry with menacing music* This is the type of story we should be seeing. Like a halo style covenant type of story where the cabal speak their native language with sub titles and show the history of the said psion. Before and after . . . Bungie has really fallen off with the story telling. Even I could re write destiny's story by simple detailed imagination. All of us could . . .

4 RepliesI. LOVE. THIS. I would like to see psions, Sindu, clipse, etc side with us and possibly the fallen. I would also really like to see the arkborn, clipse, and sindu, in action in the future. Or what about playable psion guardians?! BRAIN OVERLOADING DUE TO SHEER NUMBER OF POSSIBILITIES!!!!!!! To bad bungee had to make the psions's faces look hideous. 4 RepliesI think that the "blowing up planets for fun" line from D1 was just propaganda of the Speaker and the Earth Gov against the cabal or at least the red legion because everything we've learned about the "true Cabal ways" (that's how Calus calls the Cabal society before Ghauls coup) is a little bit more diplomatic or peacefull. Another piece of evidence is the fact that Calus loyalist Cabal forces didn't crush the crippled humanity or our Solar System but offered us a gift if we join him. I'm not saying that he's a good guy but far better than any other faction. We should consider joining the empire because it would protect humanity against all foes. You have to consider the fact, that the technology of the Cabal easily blocked our light and shattered us as a whole. Something even a god (Oryx) couldn't accomplish. With this military might at our side we could prosper again.
Oh and I have to say sorry because of my bad english or misuse of some words. I'm from Germany and it's hard to express my thoughts in another language
3 RepliesI applaud you. This is the first non-bitchy post on trending I’ve seen in a day. Good for you, man.

2 RepliesI think that's very likely to be true. Still, the Roman Empire did much of its expansion peacefully. They didn't work so much through annihilation as through assimilation. People saw the benefits of Imperial membership: roads, security, civilization. If the Cabal had been like Rome, they would have showed up on our doorstep, explained that they were incorporating us into their empire. If we had agreed, they would have shared knowledge (though maybe not technology) with us, chased off the Fallen (or incorporated them as well and told us to play nice together or else), probably blown up the moon to get rid of the Hive (would have caused a few 10.0 earthquakes on Earth, sorry 'bout that), and demanded that we pay tribute. Maybe either conscripted the Guardians or encouraged them to serve as Auxilliae. If we resisted, well, Destiny 2 would have happened.

I appreciate you taking the time to write up a thought-provoking and engaging topic, that isn't riddled with salt or complaints about balance changes that need to be made, etc. I feel I learned quite a bit about prions now at least, and when a game like Destiny (1 and 2) has snippets of lore to discover and compile, it keeps me engaged with the game and the community putting this together.

Nice work Saint. Think you nailed it. I had this thought myself, and was wondering about it. Thanks for clearing it up.

I want to know more about psions as a race. They seem really powerful. Don't forget that the Psion Flayers from the Dusk Palace strike pulled phobos from Mars's orbit and tried to use it as a weapon. I don't think any other race we know of is capable of something like that without weaponry, the Psions just used their brain power.

Edited by E x i l e D: 10/3/2017 8:18:28 PMThis is good stuff bro. Nice to see something fresh in a swarming cloud of toxicity. That's a very sound theory too, I wish Bungie would expand on their lore. I'm not talking Witcher levels, but at least something a bit more tangible.

4 RepliesEdited by KannibalKlown: 10/3/2017 8:19:33 PMSomeone was saying there was lore stating a group of psions moved a planet or moon or something... with their minds. Which... how the F are they losing to us then? I don't know if said lore exists. Just repeating what someone was posting.
