The Leviathan and the Light

Aurash, Sathona and Xi Ro (now known as Oryx, Savathûn and Xivu Arath) went into exile after being betrayed by their mentor. Following the guide of their father's worm, the sisters dive into the depths of Fundament's oceans seeking the Deep (Darkness). Before they reach the Deep, the siblings encounter something named the Leviathan. The Leviathan knows what the siblings seek and protests:
—FOR THIS IS THE DEEP CLAIM— ++Existence is the struggle to exist— —When the struggle seems lost++ ++when the safe place crumbles— —everything turns to the Deep to survive++ ++I REJECT THE DEEP CLAIM++ —You will turn back, sweet krill of hope.±± ++You will choose the Sky instead.—
The Leviathan speaks of the Sky (Light) and insists that the sisters pursue it instead. The sisters turn down the Leviathan and continue to dive. Later on, as the siblings wage war against those who betrayed them. Although, the traitors had made allies with native of an ice moon of Fundament, the Ammonites. The Traveler itself had touched the Ammonites and given their civilization a golden age. The Leviathan, described as an "old priest", rises from Fundament's seas and towards the Ammomite moon. The Ammomite's forces protect the Leviathan, but in the end the Leviathan is killed, the Ammonites slaughtered, and the Traveler fled.
It’s done. Eir and Yul feed on the Leviathan’s carcass. Xivu Arath has made a temple of the Chroma-Admiral’s impaled corpse. Below us, Savathûn’s poisons stain the Ammonite home sea black. Their screams flavor the void. The Traveler has fled.
What exactly was the Leviathan? Why did it have such a connection with the Light? What kind of enormous creature has the ability to travel through space? I think that maybe it was once part of a species the Traveler blessed and followed and protected it, all the while preaching the Traveler's will. Although, this is just my speculation. I'm curious to see what others think. Thoughts?

  • I'd say the Leviathan was to the Light as the Worm Gods are to the Deep (that does NOT mean that the Leviathan is a worm, felt the need to say this because if ONE LITTLE THING relates to another, it suddenly means the same thing). Perhaps another vessel like the Traveler? Maybe a way to grant the Light to others?

    • I like to think he was one of the Traveller's blessed but he was the first species to be given the light.

    •
The Leviathan is the only raid so far in Destiny 2. You have to get to 260 light to unlock it and then find a fire team of 5 more. Then you spend several hours on the raid, just for one of your fire team members to leave right before the final boss fight. 😭
