Sorry but it's too hard (nightfall & raid), no fun anymore

I used to love Destiny, but then - through a gradual process - it became too hard (for this old dude anyway). Instead of being clever, fun and challenging it has become impossible to the point where even at 277 no one will let me do the raid because 'even at 300 it's too hard'. We just wasted 4 hours trying to get the nightfall done - one 280, one 290 and one 300. For a 240 level strike? The enemies are unkillable, the boss is invisible most of the time, seems to regenerate his health and, when you do get killed you respawn in an area that will immediately kill you again. Stop focusing on making it harder to do and make it fun again. The early raids were great fun and quite doable.

  • I completely agree. Bungie has made the game way too difficult for most casual and light gamers. Sure, if you game 40-80 hours a week and have no job or have fellow non-jobbers in a single clan, then yes you can get a lot done. For the other 95% of gamers left over, it's just not fun. Regular ADS are too powerful in just doing a 270 Nightfall. It's absolutely STUPID for Bungie to make it so difficult to beat just a 270 Nightfall. It plays more like 350+. They promised us that we would feel more powerful, but it's just not true. Players easily die in most of the Heroic Strikes and regular Nightfalls. Prestige Nightfall is much worse. You literally need +360 players to carry you through. Until Bungie resolves the way too high difficulty of the game, more and more players are going to get bored or frustrated waiting for the fix and will quit playing altogether and start playing Fortnite or Anthem.

I don't even have a problem completing the NFs, so to me -- at the level I am and with the people that I have to play with at least -- they're not particularly difficult per se most of the time, but I still agree that they're just plain not fun anymore. It used to be that you could just slowly work your way through it at your own pace, and so even if it was a challenge it wasn't all that stressful. Now with the timer you have to play as hard as you can the entire time to make sure you get it done as fast as possible, because you never know when you'll get into a stick situation or a spot of bad luck and end up losing like 5 minutes as a result. Even with the Pyramideon (sp?) we never had much trouble once we got things figured out, but it was still a chore to do. For starters, Zero Hour takes the timer and removes the one aspect that actually makes it slightly interesting, and that's the ability to complete certain tasks to regain time. Then, it lists Zero Hour and whatever the ability recharging modifier is called as the ONLY modifier, and proceeds to add shields to almost every single enemy in the strike, which we all know damn well is another modifier entirely. So we end up with almost 100% of enemies inside the strike having some sort of stupid shield or other -- Overshields for the majority of enemies, Centurians with their literal shields, Taken Goblins spamming their invincibility buff (side note: having them buff EACH OTHER so that they're BOTH invincible is a moronic mechanic that needs to be removed), and invisible Minotaurs, all of which drain time like crazy. Then finally we have the infinite adds at the boss phase, which is the part that really takes this strike from being challenging to downright aggravating, and not in a way that even remotely resembles fun. It's bad enough that the boss' shots have pinpoint accuracy and that he'll just throw fire on you if he can't see you, but the infinite adds take it from being a challenging fight with some new mechanics thrown in for flavor and take it into the realm of being a completely bullshit fustercluck that seems as though it was designed by a literal sadist who enjoys the fact that the players will be killed here. Cover gets changed on the whims of the game and at points is entirely removed, while enemies spawn on every side of you and simply spray projectiles at you until your dead. If you aren't killed by attacks the boss will try to walk up to you and kick you off the map. If you die, you'll likely spawn facing AWAY from the boss and the majority of the enemies; if you're at the "right" phase of the fight you might just spawn underneath the boss' feat and simply be kicked off the map immediately with no chance to save yourself. In the end it's just not a fun experience. These strikes need to be looked at BEFORE being made into Nightfalls to make sure that there are no stupid mechanics that will kill the players without giving them a chance to defend themselves -- lifts smashing them into walls, drop pods falling without warning on an area that you absolutely have to walk through, respawning on a crippling electrical floor, spawning under the bosses feet and being immediately kicked off of the map, a boss who will just hide for the entire fight and burn your entire timer, etc. -- and they need to rework modifiers so that they actually make for an interesting challenge instead of a frustrating obstacle that strictly dictates how you'll be able to complete the mission. TL;DR My friends and I can complete these strikes without much trouble but still hate the timers, hidden modifiers, infinite adds, and general instant-kill bullshit. If Bungie continues to turn formerly-fun activities into stressful chores then people aren't going to want to play their games.

      • Agree with OP... this seems catered to jobless millennials. I am 303 currently and agree that all the raid is doable but just a bit too much. Let me make that more clear, I AM NOT HAVING A HARD TIME... but some of my team mates are. Not mad at them but this raid does not allow for even one weak end. Last night on Calus, two of my friends cannot A) survive the void; B) Provide good ad clearing support. So we fail, and fail, and fail for over 3 hours. They are my friends and I cannot enjoy the game with them, it actually saddens me. Instead I must beg sweaties from LFG to help out and listen to their pompous, entitled manchild attitudes just to obtain some loot. Thanks Bungie for pushing some of us out, and if you're attitude is "get good it's easy" I just bet you've been held up by someone in your fireteam and felt the frustration. At least GLASS CROTA and TAKEN KING allowed for a couple of duds in the team.

          • Though I disagree with the statement (the 240 nightfall is a joke honestly) it illustrates how bad the game design of D2 actually is. If someone playing this game is not able to complete the nightfall it's not the players fault. It is the games' fault. A game like Destiny should teach it's mechanics in a way that allows everyone to at least complete the entry level end game activities. And this is where Bungie's approach to "make the game accessible to everyone" falls apart. The core problem is that the story and other activities (public events etc.) are so laughable easy that you don't have to put in any effort and don't actually learn what it takes to complete harder activities. A good design would steadily increase the difficulty and introduce mechanics that you need in the raid earlier on in other activities. Another pretty good approach would or could also be to make the "normal" raid a lot easier (something Datto actually suggested and something that FFXIV does for example) but make the hard version actually hard. That would probably solve a lot of problems and even encourage casual gamers to maybe increase their skill and get better if they see how much fun a raid can be. Overall (I said that in another thread already) Bungie seems to have lost sight of how they actually want to design their game and especially for whom.

            • Dude last night we got a dude that's 267 all the way to calus. And the only reason we stopped cuz i was tired as hell from work. Told the guy will finish it later. It was actually pretty easy for the dude once we taught the mechanics to him. 267 shouldn't stop any one man.

            • Threads like this are why this game has gone ultra casual and will continue to be ultra casual and likely even further casual than it is now. This player is the perfect example of someone who is not enjoying his experience with the game. And Bungivision wants all to enjoy their experience so they go out and buy the expansions and then go out and buy another sequel. If this is the impression this person has of the game, they're not gonna buy further content. They're just gonna put the game down and play something else that does give them a sense of accomplishment. BTW telling this type of player to "git gud" or that the content he cannot beat is "too easy" does nothing to help this player. It does nothing to help this game. It just helps Bungivision push further iterations of the game even more casual to keep this type of players interest and thus their money. Just sayin'

              • I hate how casuals ruin games by always whining about how they are too hard. What do you want the Nightfall to just have the difficulty of a normal strike?

                • I'm sorry to say man, and I don't mean to appear as an elitist asshole, but if the 240 nightfall was too difficult for you to complete, you just aren't good at the game. I understand that the difficulty level of some activities can make it less fun depending on how hard it is. But, however, for many players in the community, the nightfall is a walk in the park. If you're finding enemies in the 240 nightfall to be "unkillable" the issue is with you, not Bungie making activities too difficult. The Raid and nightfall are end game activities. This means that they are meant to be the most difficult activities in the game. In a game like Destiny, the fun in end game activities is meant to be found in the difficulty that comes with doing them and figuring out how to complete them. And if you find yourself taking 4 hours to complete a nightfall, which is probably one of the least difficult end game activities available in the game, then maybe the problem is more within yourself than with how difficult Bungie made it. Especially considering a good chunk of players have no difficulty completing a nightfall. Once again I just want to emphasize I am not trying to appear as the "You just suck LuL git gud" asshole. Just trying to be honest.

                  • If you focused more on the mechanics and strategized better it wouldn't seem so difficult. That nightfall was soloed. Parts of the raid have been 2 and 4 manned. Enough said.

                      • Were you able to find and shoot most of the data lattice for extra time this week? There were over 30 of them which equals an additional 15 minutes to complete it. The timed factor on them now means you really need to race to objectives and skip enemies when they don't need to be cleared out completely. The boss' continual disappearing definitely made this week's harder; I had to retry a few times to get there. Best of luck to you on your attempts!
