Angry Joe's Destiny 2 Review

I'll sum it up. He gives it a 6/10. He gave Destiny 1 a 6/10. Here is a sum up of his reasons for the rating (which means slightly above average since a 5/10 means average from him.) First, the positives: -Music is amazing -Cayde-6 is amazing -Gunplay mechanics are amazing -Subclass changes are good -PvP is fun and well paced -There is an actual, cohesive story -Progression is solid -Clan features are welcomed -New strikes are better than D1's -Less "sit in room and fight waves of enemies" missions -both sky boxes and art are amazing -cinematic cutscenes and voice acting are great Now, the negatives: -One time use shaders -Raid is extremely tedious and not rewarding enough -story is basic and cliché -no in-game Grimoire (an actual codex of lore instead of random scattered lore) -microtransactions -epic music plays when nothing epic happens on screen -poor AI (not improved since D1, enemies stand around and charge single file) -exotic engrams drop duplicates too often -you can't choose gamemodes in PvP -cringy Failsafe dialogue -little to no insight/story development on the people that actually live in the Last City (no reason to fight) -lazy copy paste elements (gear, enemies, character creation) -you get your Light way too early in the campaign -no sparrow early on (forced to walk long, empty distances) -low quality textures and effects in some instances While I still love Destiny and am having a great time in Destiny 2, I agree with Joe on a lot of his points. This really is Destiny 1.5. It's the Destiny we should have gotten the first time around. As a long time fan and someone that has played these games religiously since the beta all the way through 3 years, I have to say I am somewhat disappointed in this sequel. I think Destiny 2 is a "two steps forward, two steps back" situation and agree with Joe's assessment for the most part. Though, I think a 7/10 is more justifiable. What are your thoughts?

I honestly hate one time shaders, lack of voice actor for guardian is lame. Hell my Warlock in the first cutscene with the big armored boss took a VERY strong hit and didn't even utter a single grunt or groan or ANYTHING to indicate pain from that blow in that cutscene? The voices used during patrol are just a copy and paste sound rip from Destiny 1. This deserved a God damn 2 out of 10. They can make up whatever reason they want for a silent protagonist but in truth it's just them being lazy assholes.

    • Saw the review. Am i the only one who thinks that there is really no game like destiny? Maybe Warframe is kinda same but only at a first glance. I dont know who ripped of who but Destiny goes farther with it being a hybrid of a MMORPG and a shooter. It is a living world. Destiny is pioneering this genre. First one was sort of an experiment and now the second one is more confident in what it is doing. Sure its not perfect but its a new breed of games made to be enjoyed on a wide arrange of platforms. Not just PC only or console only. Sure it could be more than it is but i hope it will be in the future. Angry Joe misses the point. This game delivers a unique experience, in this niche there is no game better at the moment. I guess its cool to hate on destiny, point out flaws and nitpick. And then give Cuphead 10/10 when its nothing new and just a throwback to "ye good old days". So i think the so called AJ review is very uninformative at best and Joe was trying to be funny and cool and edgy. Well whatever. Peace.

      • Here is my thoughts: i didnt pay for the game, and i am glad i didnt. I gameshare with my friend, he bought it, i downloaded it for free. I'm already very bored with it. I put in more than 2700 hours into D1. I was skeptical of D2, based on reveals and the beta. ALL of my assumptions of what this game would be are totally correct: it is a simplified version of an already simple D1, its easy mode, its boring, the story was a shallow excuse to destroy the vault and make you grind for the Mida, all over again. Too much story, Bungie? Nope. Just a really shitty story, with cringey characters and no motivation to care for them, recycled weapons, recycled enemies, recycled jokes/dialogue.... Does the game function better? Yes. Does that improve the experience? Not for me. I remember my first legendary drop in D1. It was the 77 Wizard. I have literally no idea what my first Legendary was in D2. They dump loot on you so fast, nobe of it matters. It certainly doesnt feel special. Its not a bad game, but adding map features the Rockstar or Ubisoft have had in their game's gor more than 10 years doesnt make your game a better game. It just makes it functional by 2007's standard. Bland worlds, no dynamic events or enemies, a story built for children, and a loot system that works to invalidate itself.... This is Destiny 1, 2, 3 and however many they will make. This game will never live up to its original hype. Its built for the lowest common denomenator, its a vehicle for microtransactions and its only even a little fun when played with friends. Is not fun to play solo. 6/10 is fair and accurate. This game will not retain players like the first one did. These are my thoughts.

        • I love how a sequel having copypaste elements (Not character creation, that was just lazy), makes it bad. Like, you expect half the enemy races to just up and disappear with no explenation?

          • I completely agree with the Joe saying the raid is tedious and unrewarding. Destiny one raids were gold. Leviathan is absolute (OPINION INCOMING) trash compared to the previous raids. We don't need a vendor for the raid give us our rewards in the raid damn it. Remove raid tokens is what I'm trying to say.

            • AngryJoe is a reviewer I have a lot of respect for. He's one of the few that isn't afraid to be completely honest and as always, AngryJoe is completely right this time around as well. While I do like Destiny 2, there are some things in this game that actually irritate me. I can actually live with things like Bungie forcing micro transactions, weapons with static roles, no actual ranked play (unless you look at destiny fracker which isn't even a bungie website), and the cringiest AI in any sci-if game I've played. What I can't accept is that a game company that made some of my personal favorite campaigns in the past like the ones in Halo 2 and Halo: Reach, is the same company that is making us pay $60 for a game that is going to be slowly sold to us and completed over time through paid DLC. THIS is scummy, and bungie should be ashamed. I leave for Air Force Bmt on October 3rd, so I most likely will not continue playing this game once I reach technical school unless I see some major improvements in how bungie treats the fan base. Destiny has always had potential. I want to believe that Bungie will do the right things but, sadly, I doubt it will happen.

              • im going to say that all attempted humor in D2 was pretty cringy. it's as if bungie sees us as middle school kids with immature senses of humor.
Now, the negatives: -One time use shaders
Yep 1 time shaders are tedious. But it also makes sense as to why they did it. I feel like as long as the shader drops are plentiful (Make them more than just 3-5 per drop) it will be fine. Not a big con to the game.
-Raid is extremely tedious and not rewarding enough
Yep the raid isnt that rewarding. But being tedious/boring? Joe is just wrong there. Not everything in games are supposed to be easy and a walk through the park. learning from mistakes and teamwork is whats needed in the raid, not point and shoot.
-story is basic and cliché
Agree here. Lots of shit is just predictable.
-no in-game Grimoire (an actual codex of lore instead of random scattered lore)
Agreed here. Bungie should add all the Grimoire cards and new lore into a lore/codex tab in the menu.
-microtransactions
Small thing. Microtransactions are in almost all games. Not anything to bitch anymore. Microtransactions dont instantly make a game bad. (Unless content is locked behind them)
-epic music plays when nothing epic happens on screen
Small thing. Cant call a game bad because of this.
-poor AI (not improved since D1, enemies stand around and charge single file)
Yep AI Is still pretty shit. The enemies shooting your ghost is fine though. They recognize your ghost as a bad guy so they shoot at him. It is also your source of revival. But the AI still needs some work in terms of combat and logic. But for a rebuttal, Halo AI was ass crack aswell.
-exotic engrams drop duplicates too often
This shouldnt even be a negative. Its an RNG game. Joe got unlucky. No reason to whine about it.
-you can't choose gamemodes in PvP
Agreed with this. Bungie needs to add a matchmaking preferences/settings tab.
-cringy Failsafe dialogue
This is an opinion. Some people like it, some people dont.
-little to no insight/story development on the people that actually live in the Last City (no reason to fight)
Agreed with this; we need to have a reason why we are fighting. Even Tom Clancy's the Division got this right. You could interact with survivors and help them out for EXp.
-lazy copy paste elements (gear, enemies, character creation)
Gear copy paste? Some weapons returned and some armor aswell. Wouldnt consider this a copy paste. This is the same world obviously. Enemies copy paste I agree with. I wish they would have modified each faction a little more (Like how Phalanx' shields are a lot better looking and polished). And I definitely agree with character creation; we dont need Fallout 4 level of creation but we need more uniqueness in such a large game.
-you get your Light way too early in the campaign
Agreed aswell. Maybe a slow progression where you slowly earn your light abilities back (Not going to one pool and getting all of them). It would have shown a sense of progression back towards getting the light.
-no sparrow early on (forced to walk long, empty distances)
This is a pro and a con. Bungie wanted the players to experience all the surroundings rather than just zoom past it all.
-low quality textures and effects in some instances
I feel like this only applies to console. I didnt see many low quality things in the PC Beta. Those are my thoughts Overall, Joe should not have given the game a 6/10. Almost all the core features Joe ranted on the OG destiny review have been improved. The negatives that joe mentioned are all small things that dont really affect gameplay all too much. Game deserves a 7.5/10 if you ask me.

                  • I'm not complaining about the AI. Shouldn't have expected much change when it comes from Bungie. Played Halo 1, 2, and 3 and the AIs throughout the series have not changed. Some features changed like now Cabals and Hives can lob grenades now. This may be my opinion but I felt they made some areas of the game PURPOSELY more annoying like how in TTK, they have that Taken Phalenx to attempt to push you off the ledge in multiple occasions...such bullshittery is ever so frequent in D2 like the invisible boss fight on io or that strike where they have that giant vex with the sniper WITH NO COVER (Near Impossible to dodge unless you have some cover or it goes berserk)!!! In most of the fights, there's barely any cover to use.

Failsafe is one of my favorite pieces of content in this game. I wish there was more of her. My main complaint is that they eliminate any reason to do half of the content that IS in the game. Once you hit 265, doing adventures and side story stuff is pointless aside from a "I want to see some story" aspect. There's no real reward because the items you receive don't benefit you.. they don't even benefit you from breaking them down. Strikes are mostly pointless as well. It seems like they almost.. gutted D1, then gave it's dying remains to you as D2. They rush you to the the cap and then take away any reason to continue, honestly.

Failsafe is amazing and not cringy. I thought the story was pretty great. But I will admit they easily, Easily could have expanded it to be much longer. I was expecting Ghaul to be a raid encounter but we kill him at the end of the story? (atleast kill him the first time)

                  • I watched his destiny 1 review long after playing it and I got to say. He nailed it. He's not in love with the game so he sees it for what it is. He's a critic and pretty good at it.

                  • The raid was supposed to be the highlight of this game but it became a watered down version of an extended strike with tokens as your rewards. Plus you really only have 1 boss and I hate that very much just like Wrath of the machine where there are only 2 bosses (death zamboni doesn't count imo) and you fight them twice; no variance.

                  • I think it `s a great review . it shows bungie is following almost the same path the first game did , all they did is make some twiches and small improvements , but as far as making the game feel new or inovating anything almost nothing has been done. it truly does feel like a better version of D1 but not by a longshot a sequal furthermore they removed some nice features the first Destiny had. I really enjoy destiny but it feels like a big expansion and small revamps here and there.

The last of that guy's credibility has just evaporated. Basic, cliche story? Bullshit. Failsafe as a negative? Bullshit. Music as both a positive and a negative? Bullshit. Complaining about the massively improved environments? Bullshit. Complaining that a game about magical abilities gives you magical abilities early on? Bullshit. Having to walk and not rush through the game? You guessed it - bullshit. And I can maybe get behind some of his dislike of the game - but to give Destiny 2 the exact same rating as vanilla Destiny 1 is absolute insanity. If vanilla Destiny 1 was rated 6/10 then Destiny 2 should be at the very least an 8/10. If Destiny 2 is 6/10 then vanilla Destiny 1 should have been 4/10. ... Can you tell that review has aggravated me? Edit: No in game grimoire?! Except for the -blam!-ing pages of it under each exotic piece!

He plays a very small portion of the game and gives his ridiculously bloated point of you. Unfortunately, it is people like you who give credence to his opinions that make him continue. Why don't you just let the troll fade away?

                      • He is spot on. I think Destiny gets 10/10 for the artwork though! All the parts are there to make Destiny a great game, but Activision and Bungie are more interested in making the biggest profit. It shows that capitalism doesn't create the best product, but the best selling crap out of the best components by abusing them.
