How is the Dark Zone explained?

Guardians are special because they have light powers (special abilities and supers) and can be revived... The latter at least is crucial to their survival, as they can keep respawning to take on hordes of enemies that have defeated them. However, during the Dark Zone, when you can't just respawn without having to start the section over, this means you have to kill all of the enemies for that section over and over again if you die, kind of hamstringing the whole revival trump card. I haven't heard the Dark Zone explained in the story, and it just seems like a game restriction, so is there an explanation that fits nicely with the logic of the story? It seems like you're not only respawning but going back in time with your current gear, and I'm not sure how that's explainable with the Traveler's light (especially if another species like the Cabal get it, meaning if you kill one of their Guardians in their Dark Zone you'd be reset back in time!)

  • We can't be revived in a Darkness Zone because the Darkness has a strong presence there, which weakens us If we die it's like we were in a failed timeline and when we respawn back at the last checkpoint it's supposed to be as if that last fight and death never happened since your character can't jut die (we need to save the universe you know?) So it's partially game mechanics and partially the influence of Darkness

    • There are some areas where the Darkness is at its strongest, usually areas that aren't public to all Guardians. If it gets strong enough, it probably strains your Ghost's Light.

    • I believe that the Ghosts have limited light. Every time they revive You, they use more and more of their supply. The Darkness' presence is so high that revival would use too much light. A good example of this is in Destiny 2, at the start where the Ghost heals you with light. It can't revive you as the Traveler contains these powers and it was blocked from the Guardians, but it can use some of its remaining light to help us.

    • In the D2 story, the speaker said that you could block the light in certain areas. We may have our light inside us (to form abilities and supers) but our ghost doesn't have enough access to the light to revive us.

Don't look for an airtight explanation here, it's a video game, it's part of how they balance the video game to emphasize tougher content. So you can't just do 1 hp of damage and die, repeat a million times and beat any boss that way. But the explanation as far as it goes is: Your ghost can revive you. When you die, you are normally just revived by your ghost. It isn't a "real" death. In darkness zones, the ghost's ability to do that is blocked or disrupted (the implication is that light is blocked there), so when you die, you are really dead. Game over. But since you paid for this game, it takes you back to your last checkpoint and you can pretend the death never happened, and try again. In team events, if you die and can't be revived, then you will revive when the boss (or whatever) is defeated, removing the block on the light and permitting your ghost to resurrect you again. Or when the whole team dies, in which case you go back to the prior checkpoint and pretend it never happened. Does it make sense? Not exactly, but close enough to get the gist, right?

      • The dark zone is a quarantined PvEvP arena where fun and dreams go to die

        • Canonically, it's an area where your guardian died for good.

        • To be honest, I think it's just a game mechanic so that the game isn't too easy. Same thing with strikes and raids where only other guardians can revive you. I like to think, however, that during story mode you're ghost is destroyed as well as the screen fades to black

        • From what I understand, it's that either the presence of darkness is so overwhelming that the Ghost's revival ability is hampered. Another explanation I've heard is that it's a "hot zone"; too many enemies or other dangers make it unsafe for your Ghost to go to your body and do the actual revive sequence. (In game mechanics, respawns like in CoD/Halo aren't canonical, it's just so you can keep playing)

        • I'm settling with the Timeline Theory. You die and stay dead because enemy destroyed your Ghost. You live... because you obviously succeeded at whatever you were doing. They're getting rid of "The Darkness" term... as it was too ambiguous and not even they knew what the hell it was..... just generic as hell name. So far Hive have a confirmed way of actually depressing the Light in revival attempts. Cabal... after campaign.... nope. Fallen don't got squat. Vex... probably some weird suppression shiz.

        • I think the in game explanation was that the darkness is too thick and overwhelming for ghost to resurrect you

        • You relive that event, I am slightly deluded but if you do you can avoid the event in one reality or in another you die or something happens, similar to the vex but they know the future we don't, so you die you die in that timeline and you go to a different timeline technically, when you can't respawn it's where theirs too much enemy's or where the light can't reach to give your ghost the energy to revive you. In D2 it's similar but in the raid the light is more fragile and your in a place dark to the light, if you lose one ghost you'll be consumed

Some suggestions: -overwhelming darkness -ghost destroyed trying to revive -ghost can't get to you -your light get drained
