Hey, forgive me if this is the wrong forum, but I'd love to get a response from Urk if possible.
We've been told many times over the last year and a bit, that our 25-digit Halo PC keys will unlock something in Reach (I'm thinking probably something similar to the Halo 2 emblem thing). Well it's been ages now since we've had an update on this, and whilst I'm cool with whatever it is being a surprise, I'm a little suspicious as to maybe whether what it would've been was cancelled.
So, can anyone tell me if our Halo PC keys will come in handy for something with Reach (not implying that I/we would throw it away lol)? :)

Whoa, people! My PM box just exploded after replying below. I can't field questions on an individual basis, and there are getting to be too many posts in this thread for me to read everything. The answer: wait and see. And don't try and buy it now, because the list of valid keys was locked in May to those already used, to prevent us from being overrun by keygenners. A few more weeks of patience, and we'll start validating keys, PC and Mac. The reward is a small visual thing in-game, similar to what we promised for Halo 2 players. Please self-police this thread by pointing people to the main answer: wait and see.
Posted by: JAY132 Well the Halo PC key is 25 digits (5 groups of 5), the same as an Xbox Live redemption code. I doubt it's anything that would require that (so not a piece of armour). I think it's more likely to be something similar to switching on 'Bungie.net' in your gamertag in Halo 3. Enter your 25 digit-code for Halo PC into your Bnet profile, and you'll probably be able to switch on a thing in Reach behind your gamertag that says 'I PLAYED HALO PC' (or a cool icon!). :)
My guess is it's either an Avatar award, like maybe a Mark V Helmet, or believe it or not, but it may be the only way to get the Mark V Helmet in game. My guess is either an Armor, or an Avatar Award.
Posted by: sawnose It also means that buying one of the few remaining copies at retail won't help you anymore.
Son of a -blam!-

Sweet! I still have my key code for Halo 1 PC. Hope this all gets sorted out by then so I can get a little somethin' somethin' in Reach. ;)
-
Wow I can't believe I still have my activation key. I can't believe I still have the friggen box.
-
Will CE for Mac keys work as well?
-
What if I still have my original copy of it for the Xbox? I never legally got the PC version.
-
Awesome, I own CE for pc.
Posted by: Hylebos Shame I don't own a copy of CE on the PC, no CE flair for me :)
I had it for Mac ages ago, but now my Mac is dead so i don't have it at all =/

What I have never heard of this what is this all about because I am totally lost? Someone please fill me in. It would be very much appreciated, thank you.
-
Oh, yes! I still got my old key from '05, that should work... right?
-
I need to buy a fresh copy of Halo PC since I lost my other copy long ago. I've pirated a few things in my life, but I just absolutely refuse to pirate Halo PC. I love the game too much to do that...and hey. It's only $20. :P
-
Okay that's great, thanks man. :)

Yes, that was me in the podcast, and in fact we were discussing details at the office today. We should have the final feature ready for use in about a month. We're dealing with the keygen problem as best we can. For starters, I pulled a list of keys that had actually been used as of a month or two ago, and we'll probably validate against that list. So people won't be able to just get the keygen now and claim the... reward. (i.e., people who didn't even bother to pirate the game :-) It also means that buying one of the few remaining copies at retail won't help you anymore. So yeah, we're on it. Start spreading the word on other sites that Halo PC users should check here a couple weeks before Reach launches for details on what to do with the key. edit - see my addendum at the end of the OP edit - To clarify, OLD keys work. If you ever used your key (technically, to enter the multiplayer game lobby, since that's what validates the key) at any time from 2003 until a couple months ago (May?), you should be ok. We won't be allowing NEW keys, because we'll assume they were keygenned. "Halo 1 for Mac" users are included in this. "Halo 2 for PC" is NOT included since Bungie wasn't involved in that port. edit - The reward is a small "visual flair", as was described during the last days of Halo 2 for players of that game. Not armor or anything in the Armory. We realize that some people have lost their keys or never played online to validate their key, and unfortunately we can't do anything about that. If that's you, you're not missing out on something like Recon or Flames, it's just a little indication that people have been part of a certain Halo community for a while, and we wanted to give them a nod. As others have noted, we have no way of telling if you've played the Xbox version, so that isn't included here. edit - Yes, you can continue to play the game without invalidating your key. edit - "Halo: Custom Edition" - YES And the precise cutoff date for CD Keys was May 26th, 2010. If your key was ever used online before then, it counts. [Edited on 07.28.2010 11:10 AM PDT]

Don't they have Keygens for people to play for free? Everybody would unlock whatever armor we might get...
-
Can you confirm this? I don't remember reading that anywhere, but I could have missed something.
Posted by: JAY132 We've been told many times over the last year and a bit, that our 25-digit Halo PC keys will unlock something in Reach
