Given that there was no uproar then it appears Bungie wanted to remove it themselves.
As for Polygon, it's where I first read it, but they were just reporting on Bungie's statement. They actually had to ask someone which armour piece it was because Bungie just reported it as Hunter gauntlets.
In regards to the, "kids crap" I think it's quite clearly who the residents of Kekistan are.

There was no uproar for two reasons. No one noticed in time because of the speed of Bungie's knee-jerk. Or because NO ONE -blam!-ING CARES. Bungie did not put this piece of armor in their game only to remove it less than a week later of their own accord. And if the group is entirely children, why is it this big dangerous "hate group" that needs to be removed from the game? Honestly, mate. Casting your opponents as children only gives them strength.
