Exo Reboots? (Endgame Spoilers)

Minor spoilers for post-campaign content after this point. U been warned. In the new Tower, I stumbled upon a scannable object. Ghost says at one point that the 44 part of Banshee-44 means that he has "rebooted" 44 times. This confused me and got me thinking because I had never heard the term rebooted in the context of Exos. If anyone knows what Exo rebooting is, can you answer a few questions for me? 1) In terms of an exo, what is rebooting? Is it like rebooting a computer or is it different since they're part human? 2) What happens when an Exo reboots? Are there negative side effects? I mean Banshee can't remember things but Cayde seems fine. 3) Why would an Exo need to reboot in the first place? It can't have to do with death because that's what Ghosts are for.

  • Look in the Lost Sector "Core Terminus" on Mars for your answer.

Reboots are just Wipes, which we've known about already. For reasons that are not fully explained Exos undergo memory wipes, or Reboots as they are now called, in order to clear out their data. Basically like resetting a devices to Factory Default. While most of an Exo's memories are deleted the process is not perfect and some memories end up surviving in a kind of fragment form. The more wipes an Exo has had the more confusing it can get as it becomes more and more difficult to differentiate which memories are current and which ones are old. Leading to things like Banshee forgetting that he was Banshee-44 and trying to log into that terminal as Banshee-41.

    • I'm only guessing, but it could be how non-guardian Exos are revived in new bodies after "death" . Guardian Exos have ghosts to bring them back, regular Exos may have copies of themselves backed up ready to be loaded onto new hardware. Kind of like brain emulation. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_uploading
