*Spoilers* Was Ghaul really evil?

We all know Ghaul, that evil bastard that wanted to steal the light for the red legion , right? Well whqt if he was not THAT evil? Ill give you some of my ideas : 1. Bungie felt that it was necessary to tell that Ghaul hated the old emperor, calus for several reasons 2. Ghaul had a rough start, he was forced to hate. 3. Ghaul had a heart! It was obvious that he didn't want to kill the speaker. and that the speakers death was sad for him. That is why he killed old testicle face. 4. Ghaul wanted to be chosen by the traveler. But in the end his fear of failing forced him to take the light by force. The real Evil is testicle face.
• Ghaul wasn't "Evil." he was insecure. his whole existence was driven by proving his worth to whoever would "see" him. he's powerful and misguided, but definitely not "evil."
in his conversations with the Speaker his mission changed from taking the Light from the Traveler to wanting to be worthy of it.
From us humans, the evil is pretty clear. Ghaul blew up stars "just because" He invaded and killed people because "I deserve this more than you" and "this stuff will help me rule better" He didn't want to kill the Speaker, but there are many interpretation why. Did he respect the Speaker? Did he think killing the Speaker would anger the Traveller? He clearly didn't hate killing for the sake of killing (hence the star destroyer)

    • Evil is subjective. Considering he was blowing up the sun and killing all humanity, yes pretty evil to us.

    • Ghaul was written as a sympathetic villain, but that doesn't make him redeemable. He was still very much a bad guy. Also Ghaul didn't care about the Speaker. He was a means to an end. The reason that Ghaul killed the Consul is because he got in his way. Killing the Speaker was an act of defiance by the Consul and Ghaul killed him for interfering with his ambitions.

      • Ghaul blew up my chaperone, and my patience and time in the process. He couldn't be more evil if he tried.

      • He -blam!-ed with the traveler. He kicked me off a spaceship. He also broke or stole our stuff. He tortured the speaker, killed his father figure, and has RAZED THOUSANDS OF SUNS. Tl;dr: yeah

      • Bungie did a good job blurring the lines on Ghaul. It was one of the best parts of the story. He came across with the scenes with the Speaker as sympathetic.

He wanted acceptance, to prove himself and to the others that he was superior he was jealous of the humanity and the guardians for being the chosen’s, it was this that make him try to become a chosen himself to demonstrate that he was superior thanks to his determination and sacrifice and work (look at me traveler I’m superior, I’m ghaul, I’m worthy and all those nonsenses he said) the speaker only utilized this to gain time (I think it was for this that he blew up his cover when he heard that your guardian have regained his light and destroyed his superweapon the almighty), and when ghaul realized this he was furious Remember that he said that it will be his first failure if the traveler didn't give him the light willingly, so he was like "sempai notice me" all along but took the light by force at the end and started to say all that things to you at the final battle the consul wasn't blind for this and didn´t care for the traveler blessing and didn´t needed to prove his worth, he only wanted vengeance that’s why he was so eager to steal the light and mad at Ghaul for being stubborn by his wish of being a chosen too and trapped by the speakers word

        • Like Temple from RvB Season 15, both were necessarily evil but they did things that weren't redeemable.
