So what exactly happened to the speaker? After Gauls ugly general guy turned off the restrains he just falls to the floor, unmoving and his mask falls off. Is he supposed to be dead here? I don't see how that killed him, even if he was extremely fatigued, but he is not at the tower and I heard an NPC (I can't remember which) say that there's nothing in the speakers journals to explain what happened to the traveller, which I took to suggest that the speaker is gone, because otherwise they could just ask.
What does everyone think happened? Am I missing something? It just seemed inconclusive to me.

He died. He had to die since the Traveller came back to life. His entire role was to speak for the Traveller when it could not. Now that his use was negated story wise Bungie wrapped up his story in the easiest way possible. Being dead there is no more question of what he may or may not do.

2 RepliesIts never really explained what the speaker is. His lifespan would imply that he's definitely not human. We also know that he isn't a guardian. It may be that the mask is a piece of the traveler or infused with the traveler's light and that the rest of his body is just a puppet. Perhaps when the mask broke, the speaker died because all his life force was in the mask.

2 RepliesPersonally, I'm wondering if...
The first DLC involving Osiris will have him replace the old Speaker, as according to the Grimoire that's what the old Speaker wanted.
I like FancyJedi's theory, but to be clear, remember the size comparison between Ghaul and a normal sized guardian. The fall could've easily crippled/killed him if he was already subjected to torture, which to me seems like he was.

There is a scannable in the tower that says he's dead.
