Not being able to infuse different weapon types feels overly limiting

I understand this is likely a wall put in place to limit our light level progress to make us play longer, but what it will also do is make people like myself choose between playing higher level activities with weapons they don't like or aren't good with vs. Not doing those activities since the weapons we do like aren't dropping at higher levels. It seems like a petty complaint, but it really kills my enjoyment of the game. Dont get me wrong, Destiny 2 is great and so far this hasn't been a huge issue for me yet because I've gotten mostly lucky. But if I don't get higher level auto rifles to infuse my Hardlight/ Scathelock, I may be forced into using guns I don't find fun to use just to get into the raid. It feels like poor design to me. Again, I love Destiny 2, and it is much better than Destiny 1, but this artificial wall seems really crappy to me. Edit: Wow this blew up. Just a side note: I do not mind the light grind, in fact, I enjoy it! What I DO mind is being forced into using weapon archetypes that I do not enjoy using just to raise my light level. In Destiny 1, you could transfuse like weapon categories into each other regardless of type (primary, special, heavy). I would love for that to come back. Yes, I know you can infuse energy and kinetic into each other if they are the same weapon type, that's not the issue. My issue is I can't transfuse my 279 Graviton Lance (or as I call it, the Hot Garbage) into my 271 Hardlight. To reach my highest possible light level, I am forced to use weapons I hate. THAT, to me, is poor design.

I have a shitty 290 grenade launcher that I want to infuse so badly. It dropped at a unusually high power level and I been stuck with this pos forever.

    • I agree. They need the same infusion system back if you ask me.

I only find that with fighting lion, since no one uses grenade launchers

I like that they rebalanced the costs of infusion, where infusing an item adds the cost of dismantling that item towards the cost. (dismantling legendaries gives you 3 shards, it takes 4 to infuse, so it only costs 1 to put a legendary into a legendary) but I don't like that the only way I can keep using my auto rifle is to keep finding more -blam!-ing auto rifles. Especially since I'm currently running an auto + coldheart which both need autos to infuse. Getting shards are not hard at all after hitting 260 light tho. Legendaries dropping like flies.

        • They did, and cross class armor infusion has been removed also. I was initially irritated at this after finishing the story on my Titan. But once I transferred weapons, the drops were so fantastic that it didn't take long to hit 275+ on my alts. So yes while I agree with your frustrations (game keeps giving me Snipers and I wants Rockets and Shotguns for example) we don't have to level any of the gear and it forces me to experiment with the different weapon types. Now the thing is, once your "engram" level changes (you can check this with any vendor in the tower) you can equip whatever you want and still progress! I feel it's a win. Solid progression system.

        • We are in week 1. Offcourse this limits you right now. But once you really get things going you will have plenty of infusion material. Somehow people are expecting to hit max light in 3 days. Of this would be the case you would be writing a rage post about how easy it is instead of this one. So just be patient once we are a week or 2 from now you will probably drown in legendaries and exotics and you will never think of this issue again.

        • Had to play the whole campaign pretty much with f,n hand cannons because that was all that was dropping for my warlock - that makes me very sad panda

        • Here here! Lots of sidearms and grenade launchers are going to waste for me. But the legendary shards are helpful. But still, it's slowing down my grind.

        • I had to get the sturm quest done just to infuse my old fashioned hand cannon. An awful lot of work for a single infusion.

        • So it has to be the same model or same type? Because it was always same type, if it's same model then yeah stupid.

          • Actually it's a lot more crushing than you think. I bet if you check your inventory now you'll notice that you don't have amny options of weapons to go to for different situations. You'll also likely not have noticed that gear with legendary mods do not count those mods for infusion so infusing a 275 legendary with a legendary mod into a 265 without a legendary mod will net you a 270 weapon. There seem to be a heck of a lot of little things put in to make levelling more grindy than it needs to be. For instance (be honest) how many of you have created and levelled 3 characters already? I barely managed to get a second to 20 before I couldn't face all of the grinding and fiddly attempts to get powerful gear engrams again. I haven't even touched my third character yet as that's never going to be raid ready unless I have no life!

            • I understand why they did it but I kind of wish they didn't. I want to use an auto rifle as my primary but all I just cannot get a high level auto rifle so I'm stuck with the mida.

            • Much better than D1... ? They took out like 80% of the content D1 ended with. No factions, no grimoire, no exclusive strike gear, no sparrow racing, no strike scoring, RNG grind is even more artificially inflated........ugggh

              • And then on top of that they added the +5 mods to increase the grind even more because you effectively have to get stuff at least 6 points better for it to mean anything.

                • Ya the part that frustrates me is I keep getting weapons that I don't like or use and they are my highest light weapons, but I can't infuse them into anything I actually want to use. So I have to keep them in my inventory so that my max light will be higher for future decryptions... I know it's RNG, but it constantly feels like the game is pushing specific weapons on me lol. Don't like pulse rifles or SMG's? Here! Have 50 of them!

                  • I have read most of the comments and I don't think anyone has brought up the fact that you don't have to have the same model, mods or elemental effect. Just a note here, you can actually use a kinetic to level an energy weapon and visa-versa. That has actually made it easier for me to upgrade my the weapons I like. They also added the ability to change the energy/type of damage the Energy Weapons and Power Weapons use. Just saying that when they change things about, some are great and some are not so great. The game is still a "grind" as it should be. If being a Guardian was easy, everyone would do it.

                  • I think in the long run it was just easier this way. Otherwise the system could be gamed. For example you get a 300 void autorifle but are a 280. You have a 285 elemental weapon already. You realize your kinetic primary is only 279. So you turn the auto into a kinetic weapon and then infuse it into your kinetic primary. You managed to jump about 3-5 light levels. Sounds awesome, but I could see it staling out the game a bit. I too am a bit annoyed by this but solely for the reason I only get high level hand cannons that I don't like and don't want to use lol. I also cant shard them until I receive a better weapon. I don't mind handcannons but it and sidearms are very underwelming in PvE imo.

                  • I would love to use my Dire Promise Handcannon, but my highest weapon is the MIDA Multi Tool at 283 light. Don't get me wrong, I love the MIDA, but I really like Handcannon's.

                  • Actually as long as you keep the high light level weapon in your inventory it'll count as being equipped. Since they try to find your highest level loadout

                  • Yes I agree this is completely ridiculous and put in simply to make the grind harder. I'm used to grinding I played D1 from day one including the Beta. I've grinded planetary materials for HOURS in D1 ha ha. This is a mechanic that needs to change
