So I've just finished the first mission for the destiny 2 beta for the third time (PC master race) and it looks and SOUNDS amazing. Thinking back I can't help but think of Master Chief and Cortana. The relation ship that we share with our ghost is very similar and am a little disappointed that we did not jump off the ship after our ghost. Instead we waste away in sorrow as we wait for Ghaul to finish his monologue and nudge us off the edge of the ship in a less then epic scenario. What I mean is where is that leap of faith???
Why were we chosen as a Guardian? Why did humanity receive the light of the traveler? As the guardian who defeated countless foes that seemed hopeless to fight against, we are going to let the loss of light stand in our way to save our ghost, ourselves and the rest of the human race? Nothing in this first mission gave me any reason to think of why we were deserving of being given light in the first place? Are we so pathetic that we NEED the light?? I thought the light was a gift to help us show the universe that as humanity we don't let anything stand in our way. Did we not learn how to fly to the moon and back in only 15 years? We have created weapons of mass destruction in 1945, and by 2017 we have super computers with the ability to process information like the amount of energy that would be needed to fly to mars and back, and run cyclotrons that bring particles near if not over the speed of light and product destruction because of the fact that research of AI's led to computers making up a language of their own to communicate faster. The year in Destiny is at least after 2562. That is at least 500 years of progress. And all that progress has gotten us where...
Any way, I'm a little disappointed how the first mission ended but understand that this is only part of the story and many more missions to follow. I don't think you should throw away everything the first game has built like it doesn't exist (I'm talking lore wise, I do agree with the equipment reset). Pull that experience from your roots Bungie! We know you guys can make a great game and I will definitely play through it like a book.

I love my iPhone and rely upon it every hour of the day. I imagine this is also how the Guardian feels about their Ghost. If my iPhone was broken, I would try to keep the parts safe and hope to fix it. If somebody tossed my iPhone out of a plane in mid-flight though, I sure as -blam!- wouldn't jump off the plane just to catch it. Nope nope nope. I'm actually glad the Guardian didn't jump, that would have been cringeworthy as all hell!

1 ReplyLosing light as guardians is like gettiing congestive heart failure. They're space zombies who derive their powers from light ergo losing that power would hurt a lot.

1 ReplyThe way I see it, that was the whole point of that mission. Ghaul tells us that we are nothing without the light, and the circumstances force us to question that as well. It's set up for the rest of the story, when we fight to get back out light and learn more about our connection to it. We are left feeling weak so that we can become strong again, but in a way that we can appreciate our power.

We could barely move due to our loss of the light, much less go after our ghost

Think of guardians as pneumatic tool (a tool such as a impact wrench or jackhammer that runs on air). When Gary put the force field around the traveler it cut of our supply of air (this is a metaphor, Gary cut off our light not air) meaning that we are basically useless because we have used the light as a crutch for so long we don't even remember what it is like to try and stand without the light empowering us.

"Are we so pathetic that we NEED the light?" In a word, yes. Without it we were dead. Literally. This isn't a mythic tale where the light is a gift because we were worthy. The light isn't Excalibur or Mjolnir. If anything, WE are the powerful relic in the story, a tool found by the traveler with an unparalleled ability to channel the traveler's light. A tool capable of forming a symbiosis where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. What happens when that tool, that powerful relic, has a mind of its own? What will it choose to do? What will WE choose to do? We may not have been given the light because we were worthy, but by gaining and losing it we are given the chance to discover our own worth. Perhaps the light is merely the test by which our worth is revealed. At least that's the story I want to hear. Not some self righteous, holier than thou rhetoric. That makes us no better than Gaul.

It's true that the advances made in this world are down to the travellers arrival. The longer life (300 years) the tech advancements were all a result of that arrival event. There have been significantly more intelligent races that failed and were made extinct by Oryx. But this mongrel alliance of Guardians succeeded. So that's the answer. The Guardian depends on The Light to survive, The Light, currently depends on The Guardian to protect it from The Darkness.
sorry I have been reading Book of Sorrows and other Grimoire cards last day or so, well worth it
Edited by MC 077 Lasombra: 9/1/2017 10:35:47 AMTechnology means NOTHING in the Destiny universe without manipulating Dark/Light. Read the Book of Sorrows. The Ecumene and Harmony were VASTLY superior to anything we see on Earth in the game and they lost. They never wielded the Light like Guardians, just in their tech and they still got spanked. It's about the paracausal power of the Light and Dark. Bending the rules of reality and imposing your will on the universe. Without Light we could never ever beat the Darkness. It is the sole reason we were able to defeat the Heart of Darkness, Crota and Oryx. Guardians are defined, not clinically, by their Light. It is what makes them Guardians as opposed to soldiers or militiamen. Also note the near religious views of humanity towards the Traveler, Light and Guardians. How could of humanity survived the dark ages like Six a Fronts without Titans using Light? We are only alive because of it. Without it we wouldn't of survived. Now put all that into the context of the first mission. After all the Triumphs we get kneed in the jewels, robbed, thrown into the wilderness naked and left to die alone. I would think that would unsettle anyone into behaving a little scared.

2 RepliesBeing a guardian means. Forget life as it stands at the moment. 1. Find a very understanding partner (quick or do without) My husband and I play the game so lucky. 2. Find lots of quick meal solutions. 3. Test the microwave. 3. Stock up on water/drinks buy a flask for tea/coffee etc. 4. Think about buying a commode or a bottle or shewee ;) 5. Unplug the house phone 6. Lock the doors 7. Put a notice outside to say " I am fine but otherwise disposed " 8. Buy lots of wet wipes 9. Move toothbrush and paste to with arms reach 10. Buy a plastic bin for used wipes and rubbish and a plastic bowl for washing place within arms reach. 11. Pile all clean clothes within arms reach. Feel free to add anything I missed :)

To kick ass and chew bubble.... Wait.. wrong game

We do reach out to pull our Ghost in prior to that, which I think is a pretty cool, meaningful moment that I appreciated more than I would have an over-the-top leap of faith. Further, I don't think we got all of that mission in the Beta. It felt like there was some omitted narrative/contextual material to me which might give you a little more explanation/closure on this issue come launch.

3 RepliesEdited by HappyCat85: 8/31/2017 7:07:20 AMI know you said that you understand that this is only the first mission. But I can't see what you expect. The Guardian's actions make a lot of sense, as Guardians only do what they do because they can't die. Ghaul even says as much. If the Guardian jumped of the ship it would be certain death. Also, the loss of the light seems to have made the Guardian unable to move very much. So jumping probably wasn't possible.
