First I want to give some background on myself. I have a BS in Computer Science. I build computers and program them. I understand all components and what they do. I do not claim to be the smartest on this topic, but I do own a Xbox One, a PC, a Mac, and a Linux machine (just not PS4).
Second, this post is my views. I hope to not show much bias and yet rather post facts based on HARDWARE restrictions and software restrictions. Pure scientific data. No fanboying.
Third, lets get some terms down here.
1. OS = Operating System
2. VRAM = Video Random Access Memory (The amount of memory dedicated to solely gfx use)
3. RAM = General purpose Random Access Memory (The amount of memory dedicated to general use)
Ok, now while I know this will always be a fight on these forums, my GOAL for this post is to help even just one person understand WHY Xbox One and PS4 are NOT getting all the benefits of PC gamers. (Note that I do not care what you play on, my brother plays Xbox One still because of his friends) People like what they like for different reasons and purposes.
Console vs PC.
THAT STATEMENT IS A LIE!
There is no such thing as a Console. The only thing that defines a console is its OS. The OS of a console is developed by Microsoft for Xbox One and Sony for PS4. These OS's are designed to load and run your games, to open apps like netflix, etc. etc. They are very BASIC and simple minded OS's that are designed to withstand a limited amount of activities. Whereas when you look at a OS like Windows, Mac, or Linux you see scope of OS power. They are designed to handle gaming, word processing, business work, gfx design, editing and well you get the idea, limitless.
The TRUE battle is Console OS vs PC OS
Controller vs Keyboard
Now I know what you're thinking, well hey man, I can plug my controller in my xbox! Its easier than a stupid keyboard and mouse. To that I say, guess what, that Xbox 360 controller can plug into a PC too! Destiny 2 PC has controller settings as do many PC games. Also to note you could buy other peripherals and plug them in such as a Razer Nostromo and Naga gaming mouse. Which amplifies comfort and playstyle. (I list those because those are the ones I use, there are many others)
Modular vs Non-Modular Design
This is the #1 thing I hear and see on forums with respect to PC gaming, MAN I CAN'T AFFORD THAT! I AM NOT A HARDCORE GAMER! I just wanna sit back and play a little here and there!
Ok... understand this, PC's are MODULAR! You can easily learn to build your own (Don't just buy parts, watch videos on how to, read reviews on parts, etc.) You do NOT have to build the #1 best gaming rig in the world to enjoy Destiny 2. You can EASILY build a PC that will run on medium to high settings for around $750-$800ish, and that's a guess but I bet I could at that price range. And you think DUDE that is 2x as MUCH AS MY CONSOLE! Understand this, yes it costs, but it can be upgraded 1 part at a time over YEARS and YEARS and YEARS of play. My recently retired gaming PC was over 10 years old. And it STILL met Destiny 2 minimum requirements... Your Xbox One or PS4 cannot be upgraded. You have to buy a whole new one. Even if your disc drive still works, your power supply is still good etc. So why? Why pay for working parts again? This argument is flawed if you try to make it. If you want to play a console, then COST should NOT be a concern. You pay a subscription just to play live on xbox each year!? Think if you put that money back for PC upgrades instead?
Console Parts vs PC Parts
Now I am going to speak about FPS, and game limitations. The Xbox One and PS4 use RAM not VRAM.
Of which Xbox One uses: 8GB DDR3 and PS4 uses: 8GB DDR5. This is where the graphics magic happens. Now here is the problem, Destiny 2, PLUS all other xbox services have to SHARE that 8GB. It is a constant struggle for power for Destiny 2 and ANY game to get that RAM for themselves. BUT it saves Microsoft and Sony money because they don't have to add any extra VRAM just for the games use. (Let's face it, most console gaming isn't extreme AI environmental fighting) And Destiny is trying to change that. Think of it like this, when your character loads in, you have all these methods and items that load with you like your gear, its stats, power, etc. Each character takes x amount of that RAM up. At some point Destiny 2 hits its cap RAM allotment, which is around 26 people (The amount allowed in Farm at once). Now keep in mind they have to save space for all other things in the farm to load as well, the buildings, the grass, etc. ALL of that has to fit inside the 8GB they are allotted (which they don't get all of it because as we stated before the system uses some)
SO WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
If they are limited on what they can do because of hardware restrictions, they can SAVE RAM space and Processor space by limiting the fps. This allows for them to have all these extra features D2 brings to the table. The Geforce GTX 1080Ti (The card Bungie used at demos on PC) has 11GB VRAM ALONE! Not counting the same PC they use has 8GB RAM. That is 19 GB Total VRAM + RAM. Compared to 8.
Again I DO NOT CARE WHAT YOU PLAY ON!
What I do ask is that you consider who you are mad at here and who you should really fuss at here, because if I was you, I would write one damn nasty letter to Sony and Microsoft and I would as them, "Hey guys, since your console comes with no VRAM, how about putting a slot where we can buy a aftermarket card in it, to beef it up some."
Modular Consoles should be the future, not these non-modular things you guys are forced into buying now.
I feel for you guys, really I do, I don't hate Xbox gamers, hell I bought an Xbox One just to experience Destiny and I was mad when PS4 got all that shit for buying it on PS4, I think it was a hawkmoon gun or something. BUT please don't be mad the consoles graphically cannot handle something at Bungie. It is not their fault.
If you took the time to read all of this then thank you. If it helped any then I am glad. Flame me, say what you want, it doesn't matter, some people do not understand why some things happen. I wrote this to try to help with that.
Have a good day and enjoy D2, no matter where you play it at, its a fun game :)

You say this:
First I want to give some background on myself. I have a BS in Computer Science. build computers and program them. I understand all components and what they do.
But then you say this:
PS4 uses: 8GB DDR5.
DDR5 ram doesn't exist, and won't exist for a few years. So either the PS4 was using ram from 8 years in the future when it was released, or you are wrong. PS4 has 8gb of GDDR5, and hint, the G stands for graphics, and it's the same memory included in the 1060 and 1070 and 1070ti (as well as other lower pascal cards) but not the 1080 and 1080ti which have gddr5x.

Tl;dr Destiny 2 on PC>Console

People with degrees (lol), should be smart enough to know (again, lol), consoles and PC comparisons are just lazy attempts to assert PC users are the better breed. I could build a PC blindfolded, but that time in my life is long gone. I just want to play my games nice and easy and without the need to purchase constantly changing hardware, regardless how modular it is. Modular=convenient which always translates to spending more to replace parts. So you keep your PC, I’ll keep my Xbox one and PS4, and we both have fun.

7 RepliesCan build my own PC, have done several times. I just cant be bothered anymore. $649 for an Xbox One X.....thats a decent CPU, or a middling GFX card, maybe RAM and Mobo... You can't build a decent PC in Aus for anything under a $1000, something that will last 5+ years. Then there's money for peripherals and games on top of that....It's just not worth it for me frankly. A console is just easier and allows me to spend money on other things in life, rather than constantly sinking money into a box. I knew this would happen, the PC crowd would come in and start telling us why it's better, that consoles are just gimped PCs etc...I get you're not doing it maliciously or talking down to anyone, but seriously...we don't need to be told any of this. We play games where it's most convenient, just leave it at that.

Something that you're missing is that a PS4 is a PS4. A computer isn't necessarily the same as another computer. If I fire up D2 on a console, I'm playing against people with the exact same hardware. Besides a limited amount of potential peripheral advantage (Scuf, Xim,...) the biggest differentiation between the performance of the two will be their skill. If you fire D2 on a PC, a top of the line rig will have an advantage over a low tier rig, given equal skill of the players. Just the increased accuracy a great gaming mouse can give you over the free mouse you get with your PC can have a noticeable benefit. THAT is the fundamental difference between a PC and console. PCs give you infinite flexibility, with all the problems that come with increased complexity. Consoles give you limited flexibility, with all the benefits that come with ease of use. To take it to another product type: It's the difference between the iPhone and Android. iPhone is a gated environment, where Apple exerts a lot of control to keep uniformity and consistent performance. You buy an iPhone - you know what you're getting. Android is open environment, where you can get what you want. There comes a cost with that complexity (lack of O/S updates, bloatware, etc.), but you can get your device.

1 ReplyThank you Bungie for bringing the PC master race-ists into our dysfunctional little family. To the op, why the need to repeatedly qualify that you don't mind what platform people use but then follow that with reasons why one is far better than the other. Why don't you just play on PC safe in the knowledge that you are getting the best experience, for you. I know I will (on my ps4).

1 ReplyTL;DR, consoles are better : ^)

1 ReplyFor me it boils down to PC just not getting all of the games I enjoy. Like Destiny for instance. You strictly PC players never got to experience the first game. Plus I'm a very active gamer and there isn't room for another computer in my house. What happens when my wife or kids need the computer and I'm in the middle of a raid? "Sry guys i gotta get off, my kids need to do homework" or whatever else. Cost isn't the only argument against a gaming PC. Plus i can easily take my X1 into the bedroom if i need to. Not so easy to do that with a big rig. I don't gotta worry about my X1 getting viruses either. Besides the X1 day one edition, I've NEVER paid full price for a console. I've gotten them all through trade deals. I only paid $98 for my X1 S by selling old games and trading in my older console. Every gaming platform has it's pros and cons. And for me, the pros for a PC doesn't outweigh the cons.

3 RepliesEdited by TheEvilDice: 9/1/2017 12:35:05 PMFirstly, it's BSc Bachelor of Science, unless you have Bull Shit Computer Science. Secondly, PS4 does not use 8GB DDR5, DDR5 does not exist, it uses 8GB GDDR5 and 512MB DDR3. GDDR and DDR have some major structural differences that allow one to better store and provide access to textures and geometry, and the other to better store and allow access to raw data. Thirdly, RAM/VRAM isn't that large of a factor to graphical horsepower, it simply determines how often the GPU will have to flush out textures in favour of ones it needs but are not stored. The graphics card VRAM increases over the past few years have not been the reason consoles have fallen behind, they've simply increased in order to not bottleneck the GPUs as they've been able to handle larger and more textures and geometry, if VRAM was the determining factor the PS4 would have been more powerful than any consumer graphics card available at the time of its launch. Also, modular consoles kinda defeat the point of consoles in the first place, consoles are only capable of keeping up with PCs because the developers can better manage their time to optimise for one specific configuration of hardware, modular consoles would introduce an exponential magnitude of different configurations they'd have to account for when developing the game. Providing only a slot for a GPU upgrade would completely negate the upgrade after a certain point that the CPU could no longer manage the operations that need to coincide with the graphical operations, and adding a CPU slot wouldn't fix it either, eventually they'd be bottlenecked by system memory, so they'd have to let you upgrade that, and all that extra hardware isn't gonna run on the 200W power supply the consoles come with, so let's upgrade that too, oh no this doesn't all fit in the case anymore, let's upgrade that, at which point, well done, it's a PC with none of the optimisation advantages of a console... Edit: I'm not saying PCs are better, in any way, they're just different, I prefer PC... But we all choose our own poison.

If you are used to 30FPS, and that's all you can get, then you have to accept it and live with it. If you are used to play video games at 60+ FPS you will get sick from dropping to 30FPS. The difference in playability and overall enjoyment is night and day. When consoles can deliver 60+FPS on most "AAA" titles you guys whoi are used to 30FPS will get a revelation.

2 RepliesIt's funny when most people here seem to assume consoles are only option for the couch. My current PC has a mini itx motherboard in it, even though I've got a slightly bigger case atm I could easily fit my main components into a super small case like the node 202 which is just as tiny as a PS4. My motherboards bluetooth works well with a Xbox one controller & with slight tweaks to windows you could launch straight into steam big picture mode without having to use a keyboard or mouse. I'm more of an enthusiast though, to me building gaming PC's are not all about just getting in a game but the whole experience of building, configuring & overclocking. I'm currently in the process of putting a full custom waterloop (both CPU & GPU watercooled) inside a cube case 30 cm in w/h/l. A process that's not only a challenge with the limited space inside but I also have to get custom side panels done to accommodate an external radiator. That's probably a more extreme example of what gaming PC's are all about, they're not just an un-configurable box next to a monitor or TV you forget about but you make them your own & to suit your needs. You can build a massive PC with a 10 core processor & multiple GPU's all water cooled or you can build something simpler with a small footprint to go into the living room to play as you would a console. It doesn't matter the purpose & you definitely don't need to be tied to a desk.

10 RepliesEdited by PhantomSpaceCop: 9/1/2017 3:47:55 AM
Modular Consoles should be the future, not these non-modular things you guys are forced into buying now.
Yes. Yes. Y E S. THIS. I never bought into the "console vs PC" argument because it seemed so inherently flawed...they're just two different kinds of computers. So your entire article here is hugely refreshing to read, thank you for writing it. Sadly it will do little to help the "PC Master Race" or "console 4lyfe" people chill out, but you bring up such a key point that I DO hope people listen to about the future of consoles being modular. In the next 5 or 10 years, I shouldn't be shelling out for another computer-in-a-box with an Xbox or Sony or Nintendo logo stamped on it. I should be able to customize and future proof that console down to the cooling components inside of it just as much as I'm able to with the editing/gaming PC I put together with my own two hands. Competition wise, wouldn't that also be a benefit to the manufacturing companies? Sony and Microsoft are already in the business of computers. What's realistically stopping them from taking their gaming beats a step further? Anyway...thanks again, good stuff.

I am normally very good with my reading comprehension but when it comes to teading stuff about computers, I am like Patrick Star. But this post was very well put and understood exactly what you were trying to explain. Thank you!

2 RepliesDamn I hope they make a separate forum for the PC 'Elitists'. So this crap can go there instead of poisoning the forums for gamers who dont give a crap about what system you play on but all enjoy the game the same.... Most people pick a console for the games not the master race bs. I play my X1 with my local friends, my PS4 for exclusives that X1 and PC doesn't have, and PC for all the better mmo's. If you play a system for the power then you're losing sight of what games were originally made for..... FUN.
