Free to play / microtransactions

I have to get this off my chest. I absolutely despise microtransactions & most free to play games. Microtransactions is such a scourge it has seep into our $60 single player games. It's such a contagious disease that it's even affect the Real world. The model of pay to bypass the wait is now in our theme parks. Next will probably affected DMVs pay an extra $100 to get in the express lane to bypass wait. For the more familiar where is Path of Exile in all of this? I don't here a lot, if at all, about micro transactions in it. I do know it has DLC/expansions though. Which sounds great to me.

Free games are allowed to have microtransactions because they fund the development. (Warframe) Games that grant free updates are allowed to have microtransactions because they fund development. (GTA5) Games that make you pay for the updates, including the game itself, should not have microtransactions. (Destiny) That's just my opinion on the whole situation.

      • Warframe got it right. Tons of micros for impatient people, but 100% free to play if you are smart and manage your resources. I like the idea of impatient people paying for a game for me 👍

      • The point where gameplay is worse off for not buying into these schemes is when it is truly an issue.

Meh, it depends what the transactions are. Cosmetic stuff--meh don't care. Stuff you can't get anywhere else that is actually relevant--not ok. Everquest2 went from subscription to ftp with micro transactions and they handled it great. You only can really by cosmetics. But you can also pay the subscription fee and every month you get some ingame money that you can save up to buy the cosmetic stuff.

      • Every game that made is going to have MT one way or another. Companies have been saying for years that video games prices haven't changed and that they are loosing money now. MT became a way to make it up. Then every single developer after that said " yea yea, that's right, we are loosing money too so buy a weapon skin" (maybe not those exact words). Next thing you know, f2p and MT everywhere.

My only real issue with microtransactions is when game developers don't understand how to use them properly. Take Planetside 2. That game could've been a lot more successful except they put basically everything behind huge walls of either time or money, while simultaneously not actually having much content. The most effective form of MTs is to give a large amount of content (even if mostly small) that people can obtain regularly through playtime or spend a small amount of money to obtain instantly. Some developers don't seem to realize that the bigger the wall is between the player and the item, the less likely the players is to want to get past that wall (through scaling or knocking it down). You have to allow them to easily get to the point where it isn't an instant burden or tedious to accomplish. This is only in regards to games that allow players to gain items through playtime, though. MTs that exist solely to be bought don't really count, as players don't associate the items directly with playing the game. Long story short, I just find annoyingly bad business decisions to be aggravating to witness. It sucks when a game I like crashes because the developers were too stupid to understand the nuances of consumer motivations.

          • If there are micro transactions in a FREE game then that's ok. But when it comes to it being part of the game, like Cod AW'S rng, then there's a problem. But if you payed for a game, I think micro transactions shouldn't be in the game in the first place

          • I agree with some of the other replies. Free to play games need microtransactions to pay for the game and its updates imo. Games with free dlc can have them to fund more fee dlc. Paid for games with season passes should not have any at all. Imo.

            • The mobile gaming industry took this to the next level. You used to buy a game for $6.99 and enjoy it offline. Now all the games need to connect and have timers that block you from playing the game as much as you want at a time. This makes me sick! When ever you hear or see a solid game for IOS you get kicked in the wallet. Let me pay full price for the game and screw the permanent connection

            • But why? How do you expect a f2p game to make money? It takes millions to develop them so people choosing to buy a level boost or cosmetics shouldnt be a big deal. Now microtransactions that blatantly allow you better gear or one up on other players are bs and especially in games you pay full price for

            • Ill never understand some of the hard hate for micro transactions, for f2p games ofcourse there gonna have micro transactions unless you expect the devs to pull money out of there ass and in some cases yea they may be p2w or p2a (advance) but honestly if someones gonna give there money to a developer for a game they enjoy, it should be able to gain some sort of help or advantage. its kinda the same with p2p games although i can kinda see why there would be more hate for games that you already spent money on for them to have micros, but once again if someone enjoys that game enough to give more money to them then they should be allowed to. But at the end of the day, its not anyone elses money but there own that there spending so who actually gives a fuq

            • Unpopular opinion: microtransactions when done right are far better than the old dlc Models of last gen. Even in AAA games. When micros are kept almost entirely cosmetic, they can fun devs far earlier and more consistently than DLC, allowing for devs to give their customers more frequent updates and consistent New content. Players are no longer separated because one player bought maps the other didnt, or can't do this premium quest. If done right, devs can make enough money with cosmetic microtransactions alone that they can give entire DLCs for free. So long as players don't get a boost from this that makes them better in game, it's good. This method doesn't work so well in single player only games, but in multiplayer it's fine imo.

              • If the game is free, and you can earn everything in the game without spending a dime, its fine. If the game cost even $1, its not ok to have micro-transactions

Prepare for the incoming - 'IT'S ONLY COSMETIC! IT WON'T AFFECT GAMEPLAY!' Well explain Shadow of War - I f--king dare you to defend that. I mean why actually PLAY the game when you don't have to? Just buy war chests so you have a better army then everyone else. It's just not acceptable to charge $60, have a season pass, and introduce microtransactions. That's just f--king greedy. You ain't getting away with it either Bungie. You've contributed to the current mess the gaming industry is in. Everyone was warned this was going to start happening. It interfered with Mankind Divided and now it's pretty much going to screw up Shadow of War. I will admit that Warframe is one of the few free-to-play games that makes the right approach but it's still there as a temptation. In the back of my mind I know the damn things are there. And that's the whole point - developers and publishers will tell you you don't have to buy them. So why are they there in the first place? They want to make as much money as possible.

                    • I'll take MTAs and free DLC for everyone over paid DLC any day. Now, my friends and I are never separated because one or more of us doesn't have a certain DLC. I'm quite happy with this new trend of pack opening shit, because I haven't had to spend any extra money on a game in years thanks to it.
