Maybe the traveler was an ancient defense mechanism (like the halos in halo ) to fight the darkness, sorta like a warmind that was mobile and independent, so computer parts in that case? OR another theory I've heard is that the traveler is a vex creation, one of the first, and its job is to make the changes in the universe that the vex want to happen. Like the god wave on hive home world, keeping the worms at bay, plus saving humanity meaning the vex could study us. Basically one of those anythings possible theories that the traveler could of had alternative motives for its actions.

Maybe the traveler is kind of like the ark or the shield worlds from the Halo universe.

Myelin games (among other yt content creators) does lore vids. According to those vids which come from grimiore cards the traveler is an agent of the sky and a direct enemy of the deep or better known as the darkness. According to the lore but don't quote me on this there are more than one traveler but the one we know of is the only one in our galaxy. Check out his youtube lore vids if you like stuff like that.
