Mute Characters - Destiny 1 Vanilla Player Character Dialog

This is, I think, all the player character dialog in Vanilla destiny. Just so we're all [b]very[/b] clear about what we're discussing, and not getting sweaty over nostalgia. I don't really have a dog in this fight. I don't think I'm going to miss the player talking myself, but if you are, I respect that and I'm not trying to tell you what to want. This is just a reality check for everybody, not bait. If I forgot something, and you care, tell me.   • I don't think you understand that the dialog was a complaint for people. They wanted more. That doesn't mean they don't want any. Bungie is doing the direct opposite to what people want.

      So your telling me by bungie couldn't just do this again. I mean if its this little and not that much then it should of been easy and cheap to put in the game but insted we get to hear " fun comments" about vex milk, and how's our ghost is a b@tch

      • I deleted one of my characters yesterday and began playing the Vanilla campaign from scratch again with a new character and I was definitely paying attention to how much the Guardian speaks. Compared to most games, it isn't an awful lot of dialogue [u][b]but[/b][/u] it does make a huge difference to the way cutscenes play out. It really bugs me when I see cutscenes in Destiny and the Guardian is interacting with another character and the facial and body gestures imply that that the Guardian is saying something but the Guardian remains silent.

            • It looks to me that they are mashing in two different story telling techniques. The muted character works well when you're in the perspective of a first person observer. However, those cinematic cutscenes felt off and awkward without you speaking. Who would get kicked like that and not even let out a grunt or scream?

                • Even just those small lines made me feel sooooo connected to my guardian. It made me gaf, when HoW and ttk came out I gave up. didnt care.

                          Problem is, this was an area where bungie could have easily made some meaningful improvements. As I've said before, a character dialogue system like the one in titanfall 2 would have been a fantastic addition. Instead, we get more of the same (not necessarily bad) stuff. Edit- This kinda goes into bungie's destiny 2 philosophy of: If it not completely broken or part of our "vision" don't fix it.

                          • That's why people are upset, because we said practically nothing. They hoped this issue would be improved upon, but we've gone from speaking very little, to nothing. I don't care about our voice, but I'll admit when Gary kicked us over and made us lose our ghost, seeing the protagonist just reach for air with no input was cringeworthy.

                                Just give me a dialogue wheel with 3-options (lawful, chaotic, and neutral) and I'll be fine. It does not have to be voiced (Skyrim-like), just make the NPC react to what I choose.

                                  Meagre (or poor) dialogue is one thing; removing it altogether, is quite a different thing. It is not a trivial aspect of the game, as a narrative, at all. Dialogue and agency are at the heart of every great story. Modern mainstream (mainly American) cinema is rife with the prejudice that heroic characters have to lack intelligence and depth of characterisation in order to be trustworthy, when in actual fact it is the opposite that creates great stories and immersive narratives. Clint Eastwood's character in the Sergio Leone films would hardly have had the kudos and mystique that gave those films longevity, if he had some annoying little twat constantly at his side that trotted out banal and facile jokes and spoke on Clint's behalf as he nodded and shrugged into the middle distance. I am not suggesting D2 should have some Little House on The Prairie cutscenes, like Horizon Zero Dawn's unbearably schmaltzy or unemotional character interactions, but if the Guardian doesn't speak at all please turn off the ghosts puppeteering and have our character as the principle agent in the story. More Dark Star, less Jar Jar Binks please!

                                    What gets my goat is all of the lines spoken to me the Guardian.... that ghost answers in my place. Or all of the talking ghost does because I cannot speak at all. Somebody shut my ghost up please!

                                      This is 10x better then having our characters be mute. Honestly I think most of the people saying "no" are either trolls or people who are new to the game. I've yet to see an actual answer that is justified besides "because I said so". Meanwhile having a voiced protagonist adds to the story and opens up the option for the wold to grow and for your character to develop. saying "you're supposed to be the character" is complete BS and those saying it know it. Destiny has never been known (positively) for its in-game story. Now with D2 having an actual alleged story we find out the main character never talks. This would be okay had we not already talked and had the dialogue not be set up in a way to where we could respond. Our ghost doing the talking makes sense on the battlefield but in cutscenes we should answer "yes" or "no" questions for ourself or ask our own questions like in vanilla D1.

                                      • I don't know why people complain so much about a mute character. I think having more dialogue would take away from my Guardian being my own action figure. Even though we all play the same storyline, we are no one more important than another Guardian, because it's supposed to be something that any other group of Guardians could have done. More dialogue for our Guardian would put us on the level of a character like Zavala, Cayde, or Ikora. But for our Guardian to be wildly identifiable as one of them, our Guardian would have to be a preset character, with [i]zero[/i] customization options from the beginning (e.g. Master Chief). Mission to mission, and Crucible match to Crucible match, no one is ever quite the same, we all start everything as a different class/subclass with our loadout of choice. The endgame achievements further help to establish your Guardian as your own; everyone beats the main story, and everyone plays Crucible at some point, but not everyone goes flawless in Trials, not everyone beats a raid -- and out of those who do beat a raid, not everyone accomplishes the challenge modes. Viewed in that light, your Guardian really is you, and I'm ok with my Guardian being mute as long as the game explains itself better this time around, whether it's via cutscene dialogue or in-game lore. If you want a game where your character has more dialogue, and your choices matter, then go play a TellTale game. Destiny is a shared world, so we can't have everyone making weird decisions that would affect the outcome of the endgame for every one. Also.. Legend of Zelda games have had a mute protagonist forever, and that franchise is doing pretty well to this day, so that's my counter argument for the nay-sayers.
