My issues with the new PvP metrics system (assists count as kills)

I have a few issues... First and foremost, I had several games in beta where ever single player went positive. That just smacks of participation trophy and dimishes the value and meaning of going positive. Is this Destiny or the Special Olympics? Second, it makes it so you have poorer metrics for helping you know how well you helped the team. I do think they should add an overall damage dealt stat to go with k/d and k/d/a. Third, when I got in to matches in control and was soloing between a and c, and getting a very positive k/d, but the efficiency showed one of my fireteam members having a higher efficiency when, even by his own account he was just getting assists and couldn't get a kill to save his life. This systems allows worse players to show far better stats than they deserve, and that is irritating. It reduces my incentive to want to play when skill is under valued by the metrics reported. If you are going to have a contest of skill, that skill should be rewarded. We never got rewarded with loot for our skill (just RNG determining what you get), so we only have stats like k/d as our skill reward, and that has been made meaningless with the new Efficiency rating. [UPDATE] People have concerns with k/d shifting the focus of the game. This is easily offset by adding a damage dealt stat. It would only count damage that resulted in a kill, regardless if you got the kill or assist. Then rank the leaderboard by damage. This is the fairest form of scoring. You get 90% the damage on someone but just get an assist, you still get 90% of the credit. Hopefully a model like that would allay peoples fears over k/d.

  • The game would be much better if they make all stats private, tired of people farming for elo and all that meta bullshit.. If half those people looked for a job as hard as they spam trials then America would be better off.

  • We have only seen 2 modes and both team focused. The other modes may be different and have k/d, guess we will find out when the game comes out. I for one would not mind seeing the k/d go away. You can look at player responses here to lower skilled players who come here to comment. First thing they do is mock their k/d, call them a scrub and tell them their comments are void. Rarely will anyone offer assistance, helping that player work thru their struggles. More often than not it's just part of the steep learning curve of the crucible. I just think that giving that player some useful feedback rather slamming them with insults would help reduce the overall salt in these forums.

    • I find myself in the odd position of feeling the need to defend you a bit here from what are unwarranted attacks. You care about k/d and stats associated with your performance. Many don't. This in no way invalidates your position. It is your personal source of motivation. Why anyone would wish to deride that is confusing. Anyone who has done a sport has done exactly the same thing, whether it's a batting average, high score in bowling, or minutes per mile run, sports, serious sports, are about statistics. I often joke with my buddies we don't know how to have fun unless it can be quantified. I've compiled spreadsheets that have broken training data into categories and tracked progress not only for myself but my entire training crew. I compare that to our course ridden or run, analyzed the weaknesses, and charted plans for targeted improvement. And it was a blast. So a person cares about k/d and doesn't bum rush directly into the middle of a fight and instead plays the edges. Who really cares? Let them do it. Let them progress as they see fit. The game should be big enough to allow a variety of ways to enjoy it. How funny it is we beg for variety but mock anyone who does things differently from ourselves.

      • They've made Destiny 2 all about teamwork. Individual skill and K/D mean nothing anymore. Just look at how weak they made the weapons. They're practically forcing you to work as a team. What does it matter if it counts as a kill for everyone that focus-fired on an enemy?

      • Ah, another molehill made into a mountain. Get over it, in two years or so the numbers won't mean anything again anyways, nor will it actually affect your life for the better or worse now or tomorrow (put your k/d or whatever other stat on your curriculum vitae, see where it gets you, well, actually that might get you a negative outcome, but only because it's a pointless thing). Know who frets over k/d? People who have nothing else meaningful in their life. Go, find meaning, this is a game, taking it this seriously isn't healthy.

        • For a person who's life is ruled by numbers, you don't seem to understand that with this (more accurate) system, the average will just go up. And so now the norm for K/D will just be a bit higher. Everyone else will figure it out, why can't you? Speaking of participation trophies, did you get one for your contributions on the site? Because if you could just work it out, you can find out what the new "numbers" are that will fill the void in your soul. It doesn't take skill to run up and kill someone that's been shot to bits and ran away, so why would you give the K/D to that person running around, camping and being cowardly? Bungie just decided to incentivise a different type of play. Instead of being rewarded for being the last person on the battlefield, you're rewarded for being the first...what about that reeks of "special olympics" To you? Also, have you ever watched the special olympics? Any one of those professional athletes could outlast your doughy ass because they don't have time to sit and argue about who deserves what imaginary accolades, they have to train.

Here's what I always hated... Doing 80-90% of the damage on an enemy only to have someone come in and shoot over my shoulder, headshot, and get credit for my kill. Some will say that's my fault for not killing faster, but no matter whose fault it is, the fact remains I did the bulk of the damage and am given an assist. That means the person who got credit for the kill didn't really make the kill. Point is, the stats aren't accurate either way. Edit: it's worth noting I'm in the top 5% ranking in assists according to destinyDB.

                • You're damned either way, for everyone here who hates assists counting for kills there's someone who hates getting their kills stolen. End of the day though this "problem" is so minor it's not worth caring about

I'm not big on Destiny PvP, so I'm not going to sit here and tell you what should make you motivated to play PvP. Speaking for myself, I greatly resent when PvP-centric players try to tell me what will make my play more satisfying. They don't know me and don't care for what I do, so their help is both unneeded and unwanted. I speak for myself only when I say I hate having my kills stolen. I don't hate it in the sense of, "Oh! My gaming experience experience is totally ruined!", more like "Hey, Douche! Stop firing over my shoulder! I'm not your meat shield!" There was a part of your complaint that concerns me though... that of "recognition". What recognition is it you think you're getting on an anonymous service? I mean... what difference does it make in the long haul to anyone BUT you if you have 25 kills vs. 15, and more, if everyone in the lobby is positive? That's troubling to me. Why? It sounds like what you are after is lopsided matches. You asked "Why wouldn't I leave matches?" if conditions weren't what you wanted. I can tell you why I don't - because I committed to playing that match. The only things that will drive me out is a family emergency or someone(s) red barring so bad they are teleporting all over or shooting through walls - or if I think *I* might be suffering connection issues and red barring. That's it. Yeah, I've heard the "I can just go for kills if I keep everyone dead so the others can cap the zones" argument too, but... what if you queue in solo and everyone on your team is thinking the same thing? That's the fly in the ointment, isn't it? That 5 other people will be satisfied with you running around soaking up all the kills and leave them to sit on zones? Here's what I think about the whole positive/negative participation trophy thingy... I didn't start a PvP match so I could own everyone. I did it to be challenged. If I can run naked through the battlefield without a scratch, I'm in the wrong lobby. Maybe a long lifetime of competitive athletics has jaded me, but my feeling is competition that doesn't challenge isn't competition, and statistics accrued from such mismatches are meaningless. I've won my share of competitions, set records, in real life, not video games, and none of it means a thing unless I am challenged. More than that... 15 minutes after it's over and I've collected my trophy it's doubtful a single person in the crowd remembers my name or what I just did. The one and only person it ever meant anything to was me. If that's not enough, I'm never going to be happy doing it, no matter how good I am.

                  • An assist earns you 1 point. The full kill gives you 2 points. Or were you not paying attention the whole time you played the beta?

                    • The most competitively played fps right now uses the same system. Are you saying that they have no incentive to play their games? This is such a trash argument in a team-based, objective-based pvp. I don't give a rats ass if you got 36 kills in a game of control if you captured or defended nothing.

Every pvp game released now is going with that system. Also you really think your KD is accurate in a game that uses trash ass P2P????

                        • Agree with you totally. I did a stupid suicide shoulder charge in countdown and damaged three players and My teammates killed them. I got a triple down for being stupid. Makes no sense at all but we had a great laugh at the time. It was this that I disliked about overwatch as I had no idea how good or bad I was.
