While people rake him over the coals for his unending desire to continue to exist, I don't and I have two reasons why. Maybe someone else will agree with me.
They're simple, really.
1. Vault of Glass. This is, to me, the single best piece of content in the game, and (again, to me) it's not even remotely closed. Luke was the lead on it.
2. The Taken King. I may be exaggerating when I make the claim that this DLC saved Destiny, but I don't think I can emphasize enough that this is far and away the best DLC they ever released. Again, Luke lead the way.
With these two things in mind, I'd MUCH prefer Luke Smith to be running things over pretty much anyone else that's already there and has lead design for the game. This obviously rules out people from outside the company since I'm sure we could dream up a nice list of people we'd rather have.
Point being, he has lead creation on what I consider the best DLC AND the best raid and I don't think it's remotely close in either case. Aside from what Bungie allows him to say, and the fact that he's a design lead and not a PR professional, I'm optimistic about the game in terms of experiences. That's what I got from VoG and TTK.
Continue to crucify Luke if you like. This isn't a "LEAVE HIM ALONE!" post. I really don't care if you insult him. Just offering a view as to why I don't actively participate in the slander.

1 ReplyIn every instance of him allegedly saying something daft I take 5 mins of my time and search the true source and have a read/listen to the whole thing. In every instance I have not been annoyed by it. He's just a guy, and Destiny is just a game. I've enjoyed that game and I'll prob enjoy D2 regardless of some guys words on some trashy websites clickbait interview. The proof is always in the pudding.

Edited by ABeardedViking: 7/16/2017 12:13:06 PMWhy would I hate a person that I don't personally know, it's a video game, I am not weak minded that what a person says hurts my feelings and yeah it's a video game
-
1 ReplyJust Buy Luke a Beer next time you meet him
-
Do you know who the real culprit is ? It's Eric Hershberg.
-
9 RepliesNo he deserves everything he gets. just about everything from the start of ttk to present day is screwed up. I myself may not don't do raids or much pvp but in pve patrol things have gone to hell. spawning rates are no where what they were in year one & the rewards system system sucks balls and people like me keep getting screwed over. those pricks have had three years to fix the problems but yet they keep sitting on their fat arse while the game falls apart while they promote D2. If you want to support a corporate shit head that your choice but I'll be damm if will ever support someone like him

4 RepliesWhy I don't hate Luke Smith: because I do not know the man and it is incredibly silly to hate somebody for their vision or lack thereof over a videogame. The end.
-
He gained a lot of my respect on his apology, calling himself an asshat.
-
He's a great developer. He's made some of the best content in this game. But he's not a good PR spokesman. The period for 'not happening' announcements was months ago. After E3, we should be hearing about what IS happening. But we've been hearing more about what WON'T happen.
-
Bungie just needs to have David Samuel represent them from now on..... simple fix.
-
He's done great things for destiny but please let Deej do the PR stuff. The throws money at the screen comment really hurt him and bungie, but honestly I thought it was hilarious
-
I don't hate the guy personally either. Mainly because I've never even met the guy. But I can still dislike his PR ability. And I can still dislike the announcements he has made.
-
People rake him over e coals because of the jackass statements he makes. No one i have seen has ever bashed him for his work just his statements and dumbass decisions because he thinks he knows what we want without listening to players
-
Completely agreed. I've got respect for the man considering he was lead of the best D1 content we have. He clearly knows what he's doing in that department
-
Luke Smith may be terrible on a microphone and camera, but he does a great job as a developer. I think a lot of people are going to he heartbroken to hear that their precious VoG was made by Luke Smith.
-
He said some tacky things, especially about the "throwing money at the screen" thing. It's like have some f'kin class bro, we are paying your salary, we aren't prey.
-
I'd have a beer with him.
-
Hating is such a stupid word to use in this context. The guy may have said silly stuff, but I simply don't know the guy. He could be an extremely likable person for all we know. Not blaming you OP, just that people on here use the term for everything they don't love. I hate lag though.
-
Why isnt this post about throwing money at the screen.......
-
Nah! I get what you mean! He's devd some of my favourite content also!

There's a lot of armchair game developers on this forum. The thing is if you find 100 different players you'll get 100 different opinions about what the game should be. I imagine it's a pretty thankless job trying to please everybody. There's always going to be those who think Luke Smith has ruined the game. But I'm guessing they are the vocal minority. Most players would think he's done a pretty good job with what was a very problematic game (even if it still isn't perfect). I certainly wouldn't personally attack the guy because I didn't like the game. That's pretty low.
-
2 RepliesI don't think anyone hates his skills. It's more of "how" he says things that upsets people.
-
100% agree. It's easy to criticize someone when you have zero experience doing what they do.
-
Edited by gsRuckus: 7/15/2017 7:49:43 AMI'm indifferent about liking him or not but it seems like they should keep him away from any kind of pr. Most of the time I don't even know what it's about but it seems like almost every time he gets in front of a camera it causes a riot.
-
I'd rather Chris Barrett take over. God I wish Staten was still there.

Edited by c0ntagion: 7/15/2017 6:58:14 AMNot gonna lie... I'm a simple man. I see "Why I don't hate Luke Smith" I dislike.
not b8
4 RepliesWell his idea of a fun game for D2 sure as hell failed.
