Activision CEO implies that Destiny 2 hard reset was made based on Call of Duty winning formula
"Destiny 2 is a sequel, a hard reset, and that choice was not a casual decision. It was something we really debated, because if you are in a persistent universe, then obviously people's investment continues to have value in perpetuity. However, it can also become intimidating for new players to join. "If you have an annual reset like we do with Call of Duty, you run the risk of people not coming back because that investment didn't carry over to the new game. “But certainly the annual release has been a big contributor to what has kept it fresh for so long. “We have been able to bring in new ideas in a way that I don't think we would have been able to do if we were still building on a persistent universe that started 10 years ago. "So what we've found is that there is more than one good way to do it. We have a winning formula on Call of Duty. " - Eric Hirshberg (Activision CEO)
- Source Well, if any doubts subsisted, now is evident that the premise "become legend in a deep adventurer world for the course of 10 years" is completely gone. What we will have is a "Call of Duty in Space" with a different story every 3 years or so. So much for the ancestral and original vision of Destiny.

  • Let's quote the full interview, shall we?
Destiny 2 will NOT suffer from the long gaps between DLC packs and expansions that the first Destiny game experienced, Activision have revealed. The gaming giant’s boss Eric Hirshberg spoke about the content droughts that affected Bungie’s first Destiny game during a revealing interview. He said that Activision got “a lot right” with Destiny but they will make sure they keep up with demand for new content in Destiny 2. Hirshberg’s solution is to pool together a number of internal studios at Activision’s disposal for Bungie to use for Destiny 2. Speaking to GamesIndustry, Hirshberg said: “I have not been happy with the cadence [of new content]. “We got a lot right with Destiny 1, but one of the things we didn’t do was keep up with the demand for new content. “One of the things you’ll see post the launch of Destiny 2, is that we have got additional AAA developers from inside the Activision ecosystem working with Bungie on Destiny content, including Vicarious Visions and High Moon. “That will allow us to keep an even more robust pipeline of content in the ecosystem.” The Activision boss also spoke about the Destiny 2 release schedule, and compared it to another one of the firm’s mega series - Call of Duty. He said the decision to develop a proper sequel, instead of doing regular DLCs and expansions, was a calculated one. He said: "Destiny 2 is a sequel, a hard reset, and that choice was not a casual decision. “It is too early to tell, but having Destiny 1, followed by three years of expansions, and then hopefully Destiny 2 doing even better, will mean we have another winning formula."
So, when it's not cherry-picked out of context, he's saying that CoD was one winning formula, and with Destiny's persistent universe approach, Activision has another winning formula. Scary stuff. :o

    • It a shame Bungie did not have more faith in destiny and stayed away from Activision.

This was obvious to anyone with a little bit of awareness. They creative vision of Destiny died before D1 even launched.

        • "Winning formula." What you have with Call of Duty is parents that don't know any better buying their 10 year olds "the latest war game" to shut them up. "Winning formula" my ass.

        • People not knowing we were going to get a sequel baffles me... You thought they would be able to keep 1 game alive for 10 years on console... They wouldn't make any money.

This is what happens when you let corporate dickheads, who don't play their own product, make huge decisions for their products. He says that being able to keep your gear, or your investments will intimidate new players. That's total bullshit. What about new WoW players? You think they're intimidated?

            • This infuriates me to no end! Greedy corporate Execs whose original words and commitments mean nothing. I have sadly grown to hate Bungie and Activision over the last 21/2 years... they ruined a great game and great vision for different kind of "Shooter"...

That's something to hope for, if the other two teams are working on content right now. Constant content with each one of the three doing a year. I would certainly sacrifice everything for new content. Perhaps that's the point of destiny 2, don't give up them everything now when there's next year.
