What Dictates Your Class, From a Lore Perspective?

Hope everyone is well. So, I've done the opening tutorial mission quite a few times over the years (I delete a lot of characters), and it recently got me (over) thinking. I'm wondering what dictates which Class my Ghost resurrects in-game me as. Yes, I get that I made the choice as a player, outside of the scope of my Guardian's personal story, but from a lore perspective, what determines whether I am a Titan, Hunter, or Warlock? Is the Ghost making an assessment based on our personal attributes, or is it as simple as filling a quota ("We need more Titans!")? Perhaps the Ghost itself is equipped with a single Titan/Hunter/Warlock loadout to give their chosen Guardian? Obviously, the Ghost doesn't just pick anyone; it has to be someone who can wield the Light, so there has to be some sort of post-mortem gauging going on. I'm posting this as more or less something I'd appreciate hearing some thoughts/conjecture on. I'm not demanding an explanation or anything. Thanks for reading.

  • There are no "classes". If a titan wanted to learn how to use golden gun he could. It's more of a philosophy thing. Risen who believe the tower should be protected generally lean toward traditional titan beliefs. Risen who thirst for knowledge follow Warlock practices. There are guardians who don't always follow one classes signature attributes. I. E. Dredgen yor. A titan who had a hunter cloak and mained a hand cannon.

    • Game-wise, it's a gameplay element to simplify it. You picked Hunter in character creation, so that's where you go. Lore-wise? The classes and subclasses are more like different kinds of training. You're a big bulky guy who likes to hit things? You should probably train as a Titan Striker. But you could theoretically decide to be a Hunter instead. It's personality combined with choice. Classes and subclasses are not as firmly set as gameplay makes them out to be. These are just the ways every guardian is taught to use their light, and almost no one decides to be different.

      • It's based on personal attributes like moral and what decisions you would make in certain situations. Those who are typically more bold and direct tend to be Titans, those who are more seclusive or venturous tend to be Hunters, and those who seek knowledge and/or power tend to be Warlocks The people woken at certain times as a certain Class has nothing to do with a quota or what is required, only with the one specific person the Ghost was made for and when it just so happens to find that person. As said by our own Ghost, they don't know what we look like, but they know exactly what we feel like and will only awaken whoever they feel is "the one". Wether one specific Guardian was woken up during the Dark Age or the during the SIVA crisis, they will always be the same Class because that is who they are

I think there's something about each individual that decides which class they become. Isn't the starting armor different between the classes? (I definitely could be wrong) That would mean that we are decided on our class before we make it back to anyone that would teach us about the light. Not to mention we start unlocking class abilities before then. Edit: I was right about the armor. I checked.

          • The short version is that every class views how to use the Light differently. When you are "reborn" you know nothing of the Light and are no class. Once you learn about the different "schools" of Light the one you choose to follow becomes your class. This is why members of the same class tend to share character traits.

          • My guess is personality and past aptitudes. That's what I based my backstories around anyway. My Titan was a soldier helping refugees escape, my Warlock was a scientist at Clovis Bray and my Hunter was a Corsair of the Reef.

          • The ghost doesn't dictate your class. The ghost finds a person that is capable of channeling the Traveler's light, and then ignites your spark as it were. The way in which YOU channel that light is what determines your class. In general, it looks to be based on your general attributes (not necessarily physical) and disposition. If you were given the power of the light, and chose to study it so as to draw more power from it (and directly manipulate it), you would likely be a Warlock. You are less likely to rely on turning the light into a physical weapon (Dawnblade breaks this pattern), and more likely to channel the light as raw power through your body (I.E. Novabomb, Stormtrance, and Radiance). Palm strikes (melees) further reinforce this idea. Because this takes a lot of conceptual understanding, Warlocks tend to band together in order to increase their ability to comprehend the light; tho the degree to which comprehension of the darkness should be strived for is a point of dispute for Warlocks. Hunters appear to use the light to manipulate weapons. Solar energy is infused into e gun. Arc energy is infused into a blade. Void energy is called forth and formed into a bow. We also see this in the melee options (blink strike and throwing knives more so than smoke bombs). It appears that this also makes hunters competitive (I.E. who can make the deadliest gun, bow, knife, etc). The primary facet of the way in which Titans use the light is the overt and effective nature by which light manipulation occurs. What is more simplistic than a fist? What is more protective than a shield? In general, Titans tend to have a sense of duty, a binding desire to protect. So while these aren't strict rules, lorewise your class comes down to personality. If you were to fight, how would you fight? How would you prepare for the fight? What would you fight for? What would you be willing to give up? It's also worth noting that in terms of the lore, these abilities and manifestations of the light are not class exclusive. Felwinter (a Warlock) performs a knee-strike on Citon if I remember correctly. An ability from the Titan Striker subclass, and mentions that Jolder (a Titan) taught him it. Additionally, Dredgen Yor was originally a Titan but began taking on Hunter characteristics- tho it is less clear how the timing of this played out relative to him giving up the use of his light.

I was a Titan originally since I loved being able to rush into enemies and destroy them before they had time to react, but the more I read into Destiny's lore, the more I found myself attracted to the Warlock, and the reason is very simple. In real life, I am an intellectually-driven nerd, who loves 3 things: books, video games, and women (the latter due to being a teenager). As Warlocks are scholars of the Light, who defeat enemies through the various spells and powers they've mastered through years of study, I find myself able to relate with Warlocks far more than Titans; therefore I now consider myself a direhard Warlock fan, rather than a Titan. I feel more at home, more confident in my identity as a Guardian. In a way, it is symbolic to my struggle with my own sexuality, but that's another story for another day.

                  • Lore wise I'd assume your class is not there when you are reborn. Warlocks have to study the darkness... I mean the light (because bungie is cutting all ties with the darkness) and require long sessions of concentration. Hunters are lone wanderers (or sole survivors) that want to explore the wild so I guess it would take them the least amount of time to figure out their abilities. Titans on the other fists are described to be the pullers that hold up the city walls. So I guess they would have to find a place to defend and have some innate sense of defense and attachment. Gameplay wise you click three buttons (start hunter/warlock/titan create character) and you are given your abilities for simplicity sake. However in TTK and D2 we have to discover new abilities so the act of discovering these new abilities would be as close to lore friendly as possible.

                    • Ninja Lazer pretty much nailed it. Though you're temperament tends to play a role as well. Warlocks are intellectuals. They seek to understand the Light, and turn it into a weapon only out of necessity. IIRC, The Battle of the Six Fronts was one of the first times in the history of the City where Warlocks turned out in large numbers to fight. Hunter's are pragmatists. They seek less to understand the Light, but to put it to practical use. Whether it be for offense, defense or information gathering. Titans are protectors. Also, IIRC, how Dredgen Yor was corrupted was that the Darkness preyed upon his mind, and his fears that he could not protect Humanity from the threats it faced. But how you manifest the Light (or the Darkness) can change as your temperament and your relationship changes. Eris Morn was a Hunter when she went to the Moon to fight Crota. But after years of living in isolation, trying to survive among the Hive and the Darkness, and opening herself up to learn from Toland's (a Warlock) explorations of The Darkness..... ....she's more like Hive Wizard that's been "corrupted' by the Light, than she is a Vanguard Hunter.

                            • It may have something to do with the way your Guardian thinks, their personality or other things. Curious Guardians with a love for learning would more likely become Warlocks than Hunters or Titans.
I am probably wrong on this, so don't take it as fact
