Trials is a Dumpster Fire. Here's how to Scrap and Remake it in D2

1. Paid carries 2. Literally no action from bungie acknowledging or attempting to dissuade/punish paid carries. 3. Scorecard based matchmaking 4. Lfg being lfg 5. No incentives for pve players to play trials after house of wolves after removal of elemental primaries from the lighthouse. This made trials a cesspool in D1 since TTK. Lfg may get slightly better with guided games but will likely snap right back if the system surrounding trials remains the same going into D2. But this isn't about just tearing down trials. It's the closest thing to a competitive mode there is in Destiny and it does provide exposure for the game on twitch. Not to mention the loot is cool and desirable. So instead of a pseudo competitive system that has fallen apart due to player frustration and greed why don't we just have a ranked gamemode? Have a playlist that opens for a certain length of time to establish a season. I'd say two or three weeks long per season would suffice as it's faster paced than other games but not so many seasons that it feels like Iron Banner every week. You can either keep elimination as the standard gamemode or rotate it every few seasons to keep it fresh. Everything is 4v4 so it's not really an issue anymore. After a certain number of qualifier games you are given a rank. Playing more games and winning will increase your rank, losing will decrease your rank. Pretty basic stuff. I'll assume the ranking goes 1-50. You can also potentially have a rank over time based on your season to season rankings, although that would be more for show than for loot, perhaps your world/regional ranking. At the end of the season you can give out rewards based on ranks. Couple of ideas are you have a loot pool of trials items and you divide your final rank by 5 or 10 and that's how many drops you get. Or you take your rank and multiply it by 10 and that's how much of a currency you earn at the end of a season and you can build up to certain rewards over time. There are significant advantages of a ranked playlist over the original trials model. One is that under this loot system there won't be a significant reason to conduct paid carries. If you give some kind of aesthetic reward for reaching rank 50 in order to carry someone there it would take too long to be worth the cost or time to carry someone that long. Second is that if loot is given out based on rank then there is both a sense that your time playing is rewarded and that your reward is proportional to your skill. This is better than playing trials for an hour, getting stomped out at game 7 or whatever and feeling like you got nothing for what you put in. The high skill players and streamers will still covet rank 50 for whatever emblem is there. The overall ranking will also give them something to fight over to see who is top 100 or something. Skill based matchmaking here keeps them on their toes. More importantly the lower skilled players that are the backbone of keeping the game alive will actually feel like bothering to play the gamemode again. The skill based matchmaking here will provide challenge for players when they choose and they will strive to get more rewards by getting better at the game rather than getting pummeled, crushed, and flipped off. And before you ask: make the original lighthouse requirements an achievement. Something like "in a competitive season, win nine games without losing after reaching at least rank 30" Ranked playlist>trials
