The Potential of Clans in Destiny

Not long after the May 18th reveal Cozmo asked what the coolest thing we’ve seen of Destiny 2 so far was. Being a clan leader I just had to say “Clan features! A great start to making clans more than a roster in-game. Though there's still more that can be done for clans.” He then asked what else I’d like done for clans and got a few replies from myself and others. The purpose of this post is to help spark a discussion of what the community wants for clan features in Destiny 2 and beyond. No idea is too ridiculous or impossible. Lore-wise, I see clans as being similar to the Firebreak Order, Shadows of Yor, or the Iron Lords. Groups of Guardians who’ve gathered around a leader or a cause they believe in. And because of our Last City being destroyed/occupied...this makes clans (and factions!) all the more important. Clans in Destiny should be able to flaunt their identity and achievements, have ways to foster their culture, and have monumental goals to strive for. Thankfully it looks like Bungie is adding a few key things we’ve been missing for the past 3 years and I can’t wait to learn more. Fingers crossed for a clan/social focused live stream in the near future! What We Know The only info we’ve had so far from Bungie came from the May 18th reveal. Here’s what we’ve been told and a few things seen in the clan/social sizzle reel. - In-game rosters - Custom Banners - Reward System, shared clan wide. - Clan Level - Some sort of Season thing seen at the 0:57 mark. (Maybe a leaderboard of clans; reset every couple of months? Could be similar to Diablo seasons?) - Guided Games Some Suggestions The following are a few ideas my clan and I have come up with. Overhauled Bungie.net clan site I cannot overstate how much I’d love to see this. Currently the interface feels clunky and the admin tools are severely lacking. The roster should be a continual scrolling list or grid, an event/calendar feature, and a blog-style page would be great! Clan Bounties/Missions (weekly, daily) It sounds like this may be a thing in Destiny 2. Essentially activities specific to groups that must be completed by a fireteam of clan members. Rewards being Clan XP or currency. Clan Shader, Emblem, Banner Features that help give a clan its visual identity... - A custom shader (or 2 or 3 to account for differences between classes) where the colors are picked individually. - Custom emblems are a dream but I imagine the vetting process on Bungie's end would be tough logistically. Maybe tie that into a high clan rank to limit the volume of submissions? - Banner, we know it is coming but we don’t know how in-depth the customization is. Systems similar to Diablo 3 or For Honor would be cool. Diablo has banner art that can be unlocked via achievements and events. Also, imagine a trinket that could be added to the banner showing that (for example) your clan has completed the new Vault of Plastic raid. This trinket could have different tiers as well...bronze = 10 completions…gold = 100, etc. Message of the Day/Events (“WotM raid tonight @ 8PM EST”) This may or may not tie into the bungie.net overhaul dreams above. I’d like to write a short message that appears on the clan tab of the menu for all clanmates to see. Officers/Veteranship Clan members who are the leader/officers have some sort of symbol either on the roster or on their emblem signifying their role. This would serve as a helpful tool for new members or other Guardians to identify people who can share some info about the clan. Material Vault A vault for farmable materials (planet/armor/weapon mats). Clan Social Space Oh man this could be the “end-game” of clans. First things first. Given the technical logistics and Bungie currently stating that they don’t want to start dividing the community via social spaces like they did with D1, at least not so soon, I doubt this is going to happen. But a clan leader can dream....Think of them as outposts in the wild or gathering spots in the City/Reef/Farm. - Unlocked only after achieving a maximum clan rank. Requiring a significant amount of resources, and maybe a questline to go along with it. The high requirements and perhaps difficulty of the questline would give clans a long term goal to fight for. - Multiple locations to choose from: Lighthouse (something in that style anyways), a Mars penthouse in Freehold, a Hive Temple, the Reef, etc. - Place to memorialize clan achievements. - Clan Vault if that was a thing. - Shooting range. - Bounty board. - Vendor/Kiosk to buy Clan “stuff” from using a currency received from clan bounties/activities. Stuff being upgrades for the social space, new banner art, and buffs for the clan. - Some way to take a clan picture! Would be amazing to take a picture of the entire clan but I’m sentimental like that. Did some quick research and here are a few examples of clan social spaces. I imagine this community has some experience with clans/guilds in other games. It would be great to see the positives and negatives you all have seen. THE LAST WORD Liked what I’ve seen so far for the future of clans in Destiny 2, but they could use more love. Made a list of dream clan features. Looking for constructive discussion and additional ideas from the community. None of this will probably make it into the initial release or ever, but it doesn’t hurt to put these thoughts out there! Thanks for your time Guardians.
