This is a long post. Try to not get too bored. In this post I'll be discussing some theories I have regarding Gaurdians having their paracausality taken away. So I started thinking about this topic after it was revealed that in Destiny 2 we would lose our powers only to reclaim them. Now as you may or may not know, a being weilding the powers of light or darkness gains what is known as paracausality (the ability to defy the pre-determimed path you will take and change the fate or destiny of you and others around you). So, to me, the fact that we lost our light would also mean we lose our paracausality... but the Cabal aren't paracausal, as far as we know. And then we get our paracausality back. It seems resonable to assume that humans can't just gain paracausality because reasons. That it was gifted to us by the Traveler. In fact, nothing that we know of has gained paracausality because reasons. It's always been given to them from something else. The only thing known to defy this is the Traveler itself (we don't know how the Worm Gods got their powers, so they might be the same way). But in Destiny 2, nothing gives us our powers. So how do we get our powers back? (Put on your tinfoil hats!) I believe one of two things: that all beings have some degree of paracausality, or we never lost our paracausality. Now, the first one may seem confusing at first, but keep reading. The main evidence for this comes from one of the Thorn grimiore cards, when Dredgen Yor is talking to three bandits. While talking to the last bandit surviving before he kills him, he says "You have no light beyond the spark of your pathetic life." I believe that Yor is implying that all beings have at least some naturally occurring light or darkness. We also know that weilding light or darkness gives us paracausality. So... would we all be paracausal? I don't believe so, at least not on the level you're probably thinking of. What if there was a spot in between true paracausality like that of a Gaurdian or Oryx and being completely causal. Where we can choose some of our decisions for ourselves, but others are pre-determimed. Now, for the other theory; that we never lost our paracausality in the first place. No where in the grimiore does it mention anyone or anything loosing it's paracausality, so for now this all basically speculation. But also, no where is said that you must have powers of light or darkness to be paracausal. To me, paracausality just seems like part of the package deal when you aquire heightened connection to the light or darkness, but not the same thing, if that makes sense. Sort of like if you get a bundel of of something and another thing, if you loose one of the things you don't loose the other. If you made it all the way to the end of this post, congrats! I realize it was really long, but I had a lot of spare time and this had been in my mind for a little while, so I figgured I would post it. Hope you enjoyed!
Edit: The Thorn card I refrenced is the Thorn 2 card.

Not that we gonna lose it for long, since it's super clear we'll reconnect with the light not long after the city attack, my guess is like two story missions after reaching the farm, using the large shard of the traveller in the EDZ

1 Reply"Paracausality" is basically a very scientific-sounding way of saying "able to perform magic/miracle". It's basically a way of saying that someone or something operates outside of the laws of cause-and-effect (causality)...and therefore operates outside of the laws of physics (the science of cause and effect) as we understand them. What allows Guardians, The Hive (and probably The Vex) to operate outside of the laws of physics is the ability to access and USE the Light and the Darkness. Without access to that Light, Guardians are probably just resurrected humans. Eris Morn's loss of her Ghost has cut her off from the Light, which is why she says that her next death will be her final death....and what powers she wields are more born of the Darkness than Light.

8 RepliesAs fundamental forces of the universe, the Light and Darkness automatically are paracausal elements. When a being is imbued one of these two powers, they become paracausal as well. This is shown in the Books of Sorrow, particularly during the Vex related segments. As for regaining our powers, we get them from the Traveler. But not the actual Traveler, but a Shard of the Traveler. It's still sort of the same thing, you can read more about it here.

The light and dark are two fundamental paracausal forces. If you become one with the light or dark you become paracausal aka beyond cause and effect. So far theres are the only two forces that are confirmed to exist that are paracausal. The blending of light and dark could be a third path but that's it since we know little on the awoken.

wow, yeah, gave up at the line 5. Who would have thought formatting matters

1 ReplyIt's been mentioned before but I believe you are off base. Paracausality is just the ability to do things outside of natural physics. I.E. turning a book into a pencil. Only creatures exposed to the light or dark have this ability and when we loose our contact to the light we loose our paracausality.

This article is in the top 10 trending lore articles right now. Guess that shows how few people actually care about the lore, given how this has less than ten replies and only one like.

16 RepliesHaving a spark of Light inside you doesn't make you paracausal. Humanity is not outside of cause and effect. The laws of causality still apply to non-Guardians. It's is being able to use the Light that makes us paracausal. We have an understanding of the Light and the Traveller. As the Books of Sorrow XL says.
Oryx knew that all life could be described as cellular automata, except for that life which understood the Deep or the Sky, and thus escaped causality.
That understanding is the ability to use Light or Darkness. The effects of Light or Darkness is beyond its cause. Its effect can not be predicted or calculated.
As for how we regain our abilities, a little clue - there's a very large chunk of the Traveller located in the EDZ. This shard is outside of the Cabal's shield yet still connected to the Traveller...
