I'm ok with them removing grimoire cards as long as they properly implement the more complex lore in the game but I'm worried that's not going to happen. Both because it's just harder to get it in game than on cards and because, let's be honest, Bungie never really seemed care about lore. Back with Halo they repeatedly tried to kill the extended universe and even attempted to cancel the first Halo book. The grimoire cards were never planned as a main feature for Destiny from the start either. People were just drafted in to write them when Bungie realised that, because of all the late stage changes and production problems, they'd ended up with a game with basically no story so they needed something to compensate. My theory is that the only reason grimoire cards are so complex now is because external writers, not Bungie, did them and Destiny was never intended to have such deep lore. With D2 I think they want to try and present a solid story in game, as they were so heavily criticised for not doing in D1, whilst also simplifying and dumbing down all the external lore that they just don't see as necessary. The fact grimoire cards weren't that popular with the casual community undoubtedly played into the decision to cut them as well
I know this is cynical, and I do really hope I'm wrong, but it just seems like the most likely reason is that Bungie simply doesn't care that much about the lore. Although, to be fair, we still know very little about D2 and there was a 'see lore' button shown at the gameplay reveal event so we'll really just have to wait and see
