Welcome back. Or if you found this one first, welcome. This is a series of posts discussing what the Nine are. Today we’ll be discussing the Firstborn Awoken position.
The Nine are the firstborn Awoken and their minds now race down the field lines of the Jupiter-Io flux tube.
Already, we have two quotes from Xur that supports this.
"I cannot explain what the Nine are. They are... very large. I cannot explain. The fault is mine, not yours.”

"My movements are to a significant degree dependent on planetary alignments."
So if the nine are the minds Firstborn Awoken (which are somehow inhabiting the Jupiter-Io flux tube) It would explain why Xur finds it difficult to describe their appearance and size. Xur’s movements are also somewhat controlled by planetary alignments. Maybe because the Nine’s influence is restricted by where they are in the flux tube and how Jupiter and Io are lined up.
There’s also another quote from Xur that supports the “Firstborn Awoken” part.
“The Awoken did not have a choice. We did.”
(I’m pretty sure I’ve used this quote in every one of these posts.) So something happened. Whatever happened to the Awoken happened to the Nine as well, but the Nine had a choice in the matter. Clearly something extra happened to the nine to make them separate from the Awoken. Maybe that something extra was the ability to transcend their bodies, or something like that. They then moved into the Jupiter-Io tube.
But a bunch of minds going down a flux tube can’t be all that powerful, right? Not if they gained power from transcending their bodies. They have the ability to create something like Xur, and capture things like the reef’s crows. They may have even fought the house of wolves during the reef wars.
"Send them one of our prizes. Something to commemorate our mutual victory." ~ Mara Sov
How can they have such power if their just bodiless intelligences? According the long tomorrow 9g helmet, there are Ahamkara around Jupiter. It’s possible that is how the Nine got their power. They may have even, somehow, gained enough power to bend the will of the wish dragons and use them as the Nine’s personal enforcers. (Because obviously Xur can’t bring down things that are in space, and he probably can’t fight off a fallen attack)
So on top of all that, there’s another two quotes from Xur that supports the whole “awoken” aspect to the Nine.
"I came for the Light, perhaps. To understand the Light."

"So much Light here, I suppose I feel pain."
The awoken don’t seem to fully understand what the light is or how it works. It’s possible the Nine may want to understand how it works. The Awoken in the reef also say they can feel the light from the Guardians pressing on them. If Xur was made with some kind of Awoken-Ahamkara magic, it would explain why he thinks he feels pain.
Conclusion time. If we assume the Firstborn Awoken position is correct, then the Nine are the first Awoken who did something to transcend their bodies. They now reside inside the Jupiter-Io flux tube. Their will may be restricted based on where they are in the tube and how Jupiter and Io are lined up. For when they need to deal with things on a more physical level, they may be using the Ahamkara. They send Xur to gain a better understanding of the light. (and trade)
And now, I take my leave. This will very likely be the last post until more lore rolls in, as the other three positions have little to nothing for evidence.
I hope you enjoyed. Have a wonderful day.

I still think they are Ahamkara. But I'm biased because I made a theory on it a while ago.

Edited by CommisarScar: 5/16/2017 1:14:46 AMI love how you did this, Fal. Showing what supports each position in almost every line of text from Legends 2. I'll have to reread all the others again and take a position on it until more lore rolls in.
Yes, the other three are quite cryptic and impossible to find supporting evidence for
