Protectors of Light Ch. 6: Too Early for This

Early the next morning, Logan peeled his eyes apart and tried to adjust to the light. He rubbed them, then looked around the partially lit room. He had apparently fallen asleep on the sofa. He sat up, then looked at the recliner beside him. Angel had passed out... upside down. Her feet were curled over the head cushions, and her head and hair were dangling over the footrest. A controller was laying on the ground, right under her head. "What were we doing?..." Logan asked quietly. "She challenged you to a 'late night one v one'..." Merlin replied as he practiced waving his wand around. Logan looked across the coffee table. Sure enough, the TV was on but the console was off, so the TV was only playing static. However, apparently someone woke up in the middle of the night to mute--not turn off--mute the TV. "It must have been a riveting match. Both of you were laughing, screaming, cheering, and just being obnoxious throughout the night..." Merlin stated. "We haven't changed a whole lot in our centuries of being dead," Logan replied as he sat up and turned off the TV. "Is this what you mortals considered as entertainment in your time?" The ghost asked as he stared at the videogame case on the table. "It can be," Logan replied. "Why? What do you consider as entertainment?" "The classics!" Merlin exclaimed. "Mage duels, jousts, fencing, summoning circles! Dragon slaying!" "Merlin, at no point--Ever!--were those considered classics..." Logan said as he sat up on the couch. Merlin scorned his Guardian. "Pfft! You uncultured, new age humans!" "New age?! Merlin, I'm older than you!" "And yet, you know nothing of which I speak. Shameful, just shameful. Consider yourself shunned," Merlin turned his back on the man. Logan pinched the bridge of his nose. "Why are you the way that you are?..." he sighed. "I'm shunning you, Silajir, please do not speak to me..." A thought popped into Logan's head. "If you're shunning me, why are you talking to me?" "I'm speaking to you to..." Merlin began processing the question. "I'm shunning you, Silajir, please do not speak to me," Logan chuckled. "Okay," he turned the TV back on and silently watched the news. After a few minutes, Merlin half turned to see if Logan was still paying attention to him. He wasn't. Merlin, keeping his back to the warlock, flew around so he was between Logan and the TV. "You do understand that I'm shunning you, right?..." he asked quietly. Logan leaned forward, close to the ghost. "You do understand you are still talking to me, right?" Logan replied, just as quietly. The ghost just sat there, thinking. He began shaking violently with frustration. "Gah!!" He exclaimed before bolting away. His scream had woke Ang up from her restful sleep. "What was that?" She asked as she rolled over and looked at Logan. "I'm being shunned by Merlin," the man replied as he crossed his arms. The warlock realized something about Angel that he didn't notice earlier. "Did you really sleep in your armor?" Angel brushed her hair out of her eyes, then looked down at herself. "Oh, yeaaah... Because somebody--" she snapped, looking at the sleeping Alice. "--took away my actual clothes," "Really?" Logan asked with a chuckle. "Yeah," Angel let out a strained grin. "I woke up in a swamp, so all my clothes were soaking wet. Alice--in the middle of Chicago, mind you--took away everything and gave me a suit of armor," Logan was shocked, and his mouth dropped open. "...Oh..." he uttered pathetically. "What?" Angel asked, getting suspicious. She shifted in her seat. Logan, speechless, glanced over to a weapon standing beside the door. "What... are you looking at?" Angel turned completely around, then saw the weapon; it was a sniper rifle. "You peepin' tom!" She yelled as she threw a pillow at Logan. "How was I supposed to know?! I couldn't tell from... behind!" Logan laughed as he tried to dodge the pillow. Angel crossed her arms. "Haven't even been dating a month, and you've already seen me naked..." she tried to act mad, but a grin still broke through. "Yeah, this relationship is moving pretty fast," Logan said as he locked his fingers together behind his head. A few minutes later, Merlin returned, still with his back to Logan, and laid a paper on the coffee table. It read, "Do you not care that you are shunned by me? □Yes, I do □No, I don't," Logan sat up and read the paper. He picked up the pen that was laying on the note, then filled in one of the boxes. "■No, I don't," Still looking away from Logan, Merlin glanced down at the paper. He gasped, then sighed. "Oh! I see how it is, then. I guess I shall shun you... from a different room..." The blue ghost slowly flew away while pouting. Angel watched the ghost fly away, then started to get upset for him. "What did you do?" She asked before sliding the paper where she could read it. "I did nothing," Logan replied. Angel read the paper. "Logan, this is so rude! He's sad, and you just--" "He's not sad, he's crazy!" Logan yelled as he sat up. "He pretends to be sad so you feel guilty! If we ignore him, he'll go away... just as I demonstrated," "Logan, that's just--" "What?" The warlock interrupted. Angel gave him a stern look. "That's just it. If you don't care that your friend is shunning you, he thinks that you just don't care about him enough to do anything about it," "What am I supposed to do? He's the one that started this nonsense," Logan asked. "Apologize for what you did," Angel replied. "But I didn't do--" "I didn't ask if you did," Angel interupted. "Apologize to him," Logan fell back into the cushions of the couch and covered his face. Angel propped her arms on her knees, then her head on her hands. She waited patiently for what he would do next. The Guardian sat up and stared at Angel. "I can't believe I'm doing this..." he said as he pushed himself to his feet. "You got this, baby," Angel mocked with a grin. Logan walked down the hallway of his unique home. He found the door, that was once an office room, but now served as Merlin's private chambers. Logan raised his arm up, about to knock on the door, but hesitated. Finally, he knocked. "Please do not disturb me, I'm shunning someone," Merlin said in a pouty voice. "I can't believe I'm doing this," Logan said to himself again. "Merlin, it's me! I feel bad. Could you please stop shunning me?" Logan looked back towards the living room, where Angel threw two thumbs-up. All the sudden, a large commotion erupted in Merlin's room. Glass broke, papers could be heard being crumpled up, items were stuffed in a drawer before it was slammed shut. The sound of fire being ignited also could be heard. Logan listened with concern. Finally, the door slowly swung open. "I guess that, since you can no longer bear the weight of your shunning, I can undo it..." Merlin said. The ghost looked up at his wizard hat, which sat crooked, then fixed it. Logan forced out a strained, fake smile. "Thanks, Merlin. I feel soo relieved," he said before walking back to the living room. Angel clapped excitedly for the two. "It's too early for this..." Logan groaned.
