Shaming a cheater gets you banned? What of the cheater?

I read a post about a YouTuber playing trails and lost because he believes that the other team had bad connection/lag switching problem. He named himself and then the three man team he was against. The first reply was someone saying to get the names of these three because the thread would be deleted and the poster of said thread would be banned. The next few posts where people who recognized the three man team and agreed that there was something fishy about there matches. I said all this to ask... Why are you banning the ones giving the names of bad connection/cheaters and not looking into these 3 players game closer to decide if they are cheating? Isn't shaming a form of punishment that is used daily on felons all over the world? Since when do we wrong the right but not right the wrong? Why should the players of the game suffer because of a few individuals who decide to cheat, and the very same players can't warn the community of those individuals? We are taught to stand by and just let it happen. Where are the people of courage who stand for what is right. I have no proof of these guys cheating and I have no right to give there names, but there is a problem when we scold the accuser that has proof and apologize to the perpetrator. Victimize the predator? When will this ignorance end? What are your thoughts?

Like many have already pointed out we avoid witch hunts here. If someone logs in with their wifi internet with a ton of packet loss, other players in their game may come here and accuse them of cheating when it's just a case of them having a terrible connection. Some players can have their personal identification discovered from their player name or past posts and then things get very shitty very quickly. We don't ban people for naming and shaming. We simple remove the player names and tell you how to make a report that actually goes to the security team that will do the real banning. Now, if you are going around spamming the same message over and over, you might be banned. But that is true for anything, not just cheating accusations. Cheating sucks, but we will keep swinging the Ban Hammer. It's a game of whack a mole as cheaters make new accounts and buy new consoles, but we will keep fighting the fight.

    • Here's thing, there is a method in game to report cheaters. You can also use a tool on this website. These forums are not the place to report cheaters. The people who deal with cheaters in the game might not look at the forums at all. It makes sense to report them to the people who deal with them. You wouldn't make a post on the police dept forums if your house is on fire would you? No, you call 911 and report it properly so it can be taken care of by the proper people. Name shaming here on these forums don't make alot of sense because of that, and because you might be wrong. I know, everybody knows for a fact they are right, but other people are often wrong, and the rules have to apply to them as well. If you was looking on the forums, and read a post about cheaters, and lo and behold, it's you being called a cheater, you might feel a bit slandered perhaps. Also the real life question of, "Don't we shame felons as punishment daily?" No, not really. Shaming is not the basis of releasing names of those who are convicted. Usually that's for public safety, The closest thing this would be is you writing the local paper calling your kids teacher a pedophile based off of, he looked like one, and you heard a rumor. I doubt the paper would print it because without evidence, their would be a potential lawsuit against them.

If those reports and the investigation bear fruit, the cheaters will be dealt with. But things like making a vid, creating a topic, and/or naming them here on the forums serves no purpose and has no benefit. If you have used the in-game report tool, then you've done your part. And thank you for doing so. For those who who want to take the extra step, or were kicked from the game (and are unable to access the reporting tool), Bungie has created a Cheating Submission Form that allows players to find the PGCR (Post Game Carnage Report) from their personal history, fill out an official report, describe the cheating, and even link a vid (if they have one). Please feel free and encouraged to use this tool, but pay close attention to the warnings on the form. * If you are not confident that a player was cheating, do not use this form. * Abuse of this contact form may result in account restrictions. * Fraudulent reports and submissions unrelated to cheating may result in disciplinary actions against your account. • It's witch hunting. The players named may or may not be cheating, but the player doing the naming is definitely trying to cause them trouble. To put it in RL terms, say I witness a murder. A few days later I see the murderer in the mall doing regular shit. If I just point at him and shout "THERE'S A MURDERER! BEAT HIM UP" or something similar, I'll be the one carted off by the police because, as far as they're concerned, I'm the only one causing issues. The proper course of action would be to report him to the authorities and guess what: Bungie has a report page. What a novel idea.

        • I just record a clip and share it to my feed about the cheaters. I get more people to report them that way. It's nice getting an email from Xbox Live telling me there has been action taken against an account I reported.

          • It creates a witch hunt mentality, that's why they don't allow it. People get accused and aren't guilt most of the time.

            • I think it's bullshit. I see people lagging all over the crucible because of bungies esteemed skill based matchmaking. Rather than putting us up against a team based on a favorable connection, we get forced on shit poor connection quality games because the skill gap is to wide according to bungie. In effect, you seem this rampant lag where people assume it's cheating. When in reality you are being put up against teams across oceans, over mountain ranges, or thousands of miles away rather than matching up against someone in your same metropolitan city for the sake of scrubs getting a fair chance at winning. So then you get stuff like this happening. It's a joke.

            • This is the epitome of what is wrong with Destiny. Actions speak louder than words, Bungie says "They will take of cheaters" then turns around and bans the honest player for rightfully naming and/or calling out cheaters. Bungie, your are whats wrong with Destiny!

            • Simply put 95% of the community doesn't know what actual cheating is and cry wolf when they lose. Yes some companies do name and shame cheaters but they still don't let their communities do it.

Why? Firstly, because of this glaring problem: If you do the math for any crucible match, it basically comes into 5, 7, or 10 minute mercy ruled matches... or up to 20 minutes for a long drawn out match. You said trials matches? Ok. It is typically 3-0, 4-1, or any combo inbetween anywhere from 2 minutes in (loading animations mostly) to 10 minute (revives and supers plenty being used). There is 24 hours a day with different time zones playing in that basically you can ALONE take well over 10,000 matches to a single day. How do you propose... per say... that Bungie go about banning someone NOT based on networking data solely, but by you or anyone posting on these forums simply to make yourself or other "wronged" people feel better? This is not the dark ages kiddo. Grow up. I have seen stuff like this in every gaming community for the past ten years and it will be present solely for people to learn that shaming anyone, at any point in time, because of flawed technologies I, ironically enough, work with every day is not only childish, but makes me wonder why exactly you haven't learned this lesson in school. Are you justified in being a bully anywhere in real life? No. It makes people question your integrity, your pride, in the lowest cases where your parents messed up in raising you or quite possibly where you messed up not paying enough attention when your parents were trying to teach you about this. I'm only making this post to say don't ever ask why you get punished for simple mistakes. It's a video game you and I and everyone on these forums wants to play, maybe see improved, ect.. there is no place, at any time, for you or anyone to shame anyone else especially over something as trivial as trials. You really want to make a difference? Fill out the report player card once your match is over or even when it is going on if you feel daring enough. Bungies system is the best optionable way which is to say it is just short of making you show video of your experience which is possible technically for both xbox and ps users.

                • I think the main reason is they don't want someone innocent to suffer because someone probably will accuse people of cheating and provide "proof" to get them banned.

                  • Cheating is a viable way to play Destiny, Bungie supports it, that's why name and shamers get banned and the same cheaters are allowed to return game after game👎🏻

                  • Think of it this way what if the so called accused isnt cheating at all. Now his name is out and players are simply avoiding him/her because some group claims he/she are cheating. Trust me many players make false claims about nothing .simply because they lost. The report system is so the claims is anonymous and bungie job is to investigate the report. They will ban if they find sufficient evidence. Now even this system isnt perfect as many reports are falsified which mean it would take bungie longer to get to a real claim.
