I agree in the sense that trials has had a negative effect on other aspects of the game. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with trials in and of itself: the issue lies in the fact that a game mode that is popular among a smaller portion of the community has had such a massive effect on balancing decisions that affect everyone who plays any part of this game. Destiny is awesome. No question about that in my mind. It's just a shame that the balancing decisions have been so centered around catering to the needs/wants of the few and left the rest of us guardians frustrated and left with only memories of better gear and abilities.
