I don't think "we can all agree" that Trials has had a negative impact on the game. There are negative aspects of every game mode, but I've had a generally positive experience with Trials. I have met some amazing people who have become my friends simply by looking for Trials teammates. Are there areas that could be improved upon? Certainly. Should Trials be completely absent from Destiny 2? Absolutely not.
