Most issues going back 12yrs.(I'm only 37) Gaming allows me to feel some small sense of accomplishment, as I'm very limited, and it's normally a great diversion to constant physical pain, which helps me rely less on pain killers. It's also good for my depression, as it's normally enjoyable, so I understand why it helps people going through emotional troubles as well.
Now, if someone escapes too much into it and shirks their responsibilities, I can see a problem with escape. But like I said, it goes by the individual case.
