Canonically, is it possible for Drones/Buggers/etc to be infected by the Flood?
-
I think they can.
-
I'm pretty sure they could be infected, but their ability to fly make it extremely hard for a flood spore to get to one.
Posted by: JABBERWOCK xeno If you remember, the flood does use jackels and grunts as combat forms, see Halo wars and the "Feast of bones" Bungie update.
First off, the Feast of Bones update displays concept art that never made it to the final product. That means that that concept art didn't become part of the canon. As far as Robt was concerned, Grunts and Jackals went on to serve as raw building blocks for the Gravemind. We know they functioned as Carriers as well. Nowhere in that article, however, does it explicitly say that they (in a game-canon respect) are capable of becoming Combat Forms. Also, I can't remember an instance in Halo Wars when a Grunt/Jackal squad became infected in such a manner.

oh I know I stick one flood pure and I blow up my own teammates?!? Then I go on ledgendary and shoot a drone and as soon as that happens I get massacred by the rest of them...

Technaclly, the flood can infect ANY organsim. But only some of them can be controlled by the flood and used for body mass, and only some of thosse the flood activly uses as invieul forms. For example, the flood Can infect grunts and jackals, but rarly does so as the need for a combat form of them is almost never apparant.
Posted by: Lord Snakie
Posted by: HundredJono Drones don't have enough body mass to be Flood Hosts. So, the Flood just tosses them aside.
Cite me something and I'll believe you. Otherwise, I know of no source that specifically states this. I find it unlikely that they can be infected, but it's possible that a congealed mass of them could be used to create a Carrier form or something of the like. The Flood never simply ignore a host, they use it in whatever way they can, which is why Grunts/Jackals are used as Carriers. Drones might have some similar function.
If you remember, the flood does use jackels and grunts as combat forms, see Halo wars and the "Feast of bones" Bungie update.
Posted by: Spartan999 The Gravemind is the consciousness of all flood forms. Without it, their actions are really just like a chemical reaction (not literally). Flood forms do no think for themselves. What kind of brain the host has makes no difference. Everything is converted to the flood supercell by the infection process. .
] We don't know that for certian. The gravemind is like the human brain, it is composed of many small thinking organsims, like the brain is combosed of many neurons. saying indivual flood cannot think would be akin to saying indviul neurons or cells cannot think, which is not currently kown. Seeing as grunts and jackals can be infected by the flood which means they have enough biomass to be infected Drones must also have the requisite biomass and I have no reason to believe that they can't be infected. I assume we have never seen an infected drone because the flood tend to infect beings that are stronger and use others as biomass to "feed" gravemind's and proto graveminds.
-
Oh God. They're bad enough as it is. I can't even imagine a swarm of Flood Drones. [Edited on 07.04.2010 9:41 AM PDT]
-
Well I think that drones could be both a carrier and a scout but bungie decided that they would be to hard fight and kill in swarms on levels like the last one so they decided to not put them in. [Edited on 07.04.2010 6:03 AM PDT]

ONI couldnt let that happen, thus the involvement of the SPARTAN Blue Team

Like the Jackles, the drones have a much higher calcium level than other species which prevents then from turning into this. [Edited on 07.04.2010 12:26 AM PDT]
Posted by: Minieinstien In the books it talks about that happening to grunts and jackals and that is why you don't see zombie midgets running around so we can assume that is why there are no flying flood.
Well, the flood don't just take control of the dead body. They convert it's mass to the flood supercell. Material composed of the flood mass has proven to be quite fragile. So, insect like wings are just not possible. They would not hold up under the stress of the rapid back and forth motion, I imagine. A gliding form could be seen, but there really is no need for one. It just doesn't serve the purposes of the flood.

Drones are as big as humans, so I would say yes.
-
The Flood has to threaten every sentient species. If we assume that the Forerunner saved the Drones from the Array, as they did with so many other species, then they must have studied them to quite a large degree. If there was any indication that the Drones were somehow unable to be infected by the Flood I imagine it would have been investigated, or at least mentioned. There is of course the possibility that the Forerunner simply didn't have time to study them, or that no Drone ever came into contact with a Flood spore. It's perhaps also possible that the Drones evolved to their current level of sapience / size within the last 100,000 years, and were not originally 'saved' by the Forerunner. It seems likely to me, however, that they are capable of infection. Plenty of biomass on those guys, when you compare it to the size of a spore :)

It's a shame really, I don't think the drones had a very big part in the Halo series they could have been so much better...
