I don't know what year one VoG you were playing but it was almost always duplicates of shards for most of my group. It took 33 completions s for my wife to get boots to be 30 light. Guess what? That was the best drop she ever got and nothing has compared to is since. The gear drops like candy now and we still complain. Smh

  • The kicker that people just don't seem to get is that you actually WANTED those shards and energy back then. You needed them to unlock the nodes on every legendary and exotic gun, period. So while you were disappointed you didn't get FB or VoC or something, you actually DID get something you needed pretty badly...

  • Yep I actually miss farming mats to upgrade gear.

  • Me too. EVERY loot grinder game has some farming incorporated into it. It's not a bad thing to have to farm to upgrade gear. Not EVERYTHING is going to be as exciting as raiding, or playing IB, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a valid place in the game. I could farm mats for 10-15 minutes while I waited for players to get on to do the raid or to get ready to raid, all the while doing bounties in patrol btw, and have as much materials as I needed to upgrade. Its not that big of a deal.

  • That was our Thursday night. We farm 30 to 40 minutes per planet. Remember the trail of guardians following the farming route?

  • LOL yeah I remember that. I also remember guardians helping other guardians by waving every time a mat spawned on a node. Do you remember actually tracking public events and wanting to do them? Yeah, that's gone now too LOL. We would always do our heroic/nightfall strikes first, then if people were on, we'd raid. If not, we'd do bounties (you had to do them to level up gear). If nobody was on still, we'd run a few strikes to get shaders and ships and glimmer or commendations. We played PVP. Seemed like EVERYTHING had a purpose back in Y1, even if you didn't like the purpose (farming). In Y2/Y3, the game is NOTHING more than strikes or PVP. You CAN raid, but there's simply no benefit to it. It's just like being back in HoW, where they just wanted you to play in 3 man fireteams all the time.

  • Exactly. Nightfall, heroic, raid, then repeat. But that was all to hardcore for the player base. Now motes rank gear and people complain that armor takes to long. We used to rank up attack and defense nodes without motes.

  • To be fair though, part of the problem was that Bungie had artificial timelines for you to have to get all the gear and level it up because it all went obsolete when the next DLC dropped. So they have a fair point in that regard. If you played at your own pace, you were simply left behind, and Destiny is not one of those games where you can set it down and come back and play it in 3 months and still feel good about where you are. Everyone has outpaced you by then and you are far less competitive. It is what made people feel like you had to play the game like a career. And the attack and defense value meant almost nothing. People still used FB at attack level 300 effectively. Ditto VoC, etc. And defense value didn't translate into you taking less damage or having less health (in fact, it seems like each of the three characters had the same defense at max across the board - a real headscratcher). But overall, I liked more things about the Y1 system than I didn't like. The game DID need to change so that you didn't need to play it like a second career, but what they did to it in Y2/Y3 was unacceptable, which is why I no longer play.
