Sound off in the comments, as I would like to see what the community thinks about this.
For me, ToC has ruined any excitement I used to get out of getting an Exotic drop. After TTK, Exotics stopped feeling rare and elusive and they now just feel like glorified legendaries. I understand that ToC was made to counter frustrating RNG, and I'm not defending the loot system in year 1. But if you think about it, Exotics aren't really hard to get even if you take ToC out of the game.
Let's think here.
You can get Exotics from Nightfalls, Raid encounters/chests, the Trials Lighthouse chest, Legendary engrams, Xur, and Exotic quests. I probably forgot some but you get my point.
Edit: I didn't get a chance to finish the post since I had to go to class, so I'll finish this.
If we did not have ToC, then Exotics would feel more Exotic, but they also wouldn't be unreasonably elusive.
Edit 2: I'm not saying we should go back to the loot system in year 1, I'm saying we should get rid of ToC.
Edit 3: nigel_the_mole actually proposed a pretty good idea. He said this:
Well, there are two kinds of exotics:
1. Those that only come from 1 source (eq, a quest line, or raid drop), and,
2. Exotics that can drop from many sources (e.g., chests, RNG, 3ofC, Xur, etc).
I'll agree that 3ofC had devalued the second pool. There were very few, if any, I got originally from 3ofC. (Had all the Exotics prior to 3ofC release, and can only specifically recall 1 of the newer ones from 3ofC. Possibly a few more, but not many.)
3ofCs basically was first a road to max light, then a shard factory, then a "why even bother."
But group 1 I actively pursued.
I'd say, for D2, I'd like to see the first group be much bigger.
More quest Exotics. More "achievement" Exotics.
Fewer in the second group.
I realize this makes for essentially two classes of exotics (the "hard" ones vs the "easy" ones), but this division already exists. But it allows casual players to get some without having to do specific efforts, and the better stuff to be a bit more effort to achieve.
TL;DR - more exotics from quests or specific points in raids.
I agree exotic weapons should be very rare. It shouldn't be elementary school track day - everybody wins!! How Iron Banner was ruined. It should be "HOLY S$&@T!! Look what dropped!!" Year 1 was awesome - had run the RNG quest line drop to get one or it was an exciting engrams upgrade. It seems yr2 & yr3 is more of a try to keep gamers interested method. Destiny 2 - reduce exotic availability

In Y1 as far as I remember every nightfall you got an exotic
-
I just hope Bungie brings over 2 guns. TLW and Mida. TLW is the most perfect creation Bungie has ever made. Everything from the sound to the look, to the animation of the gun is simply perfect.

Agreed

1 ReplyRNG has hated my guts with a fiery passion since Y1...so , no. When it takes 30 3oC just for 1 exotic? NO.
-
now just feel like glorified legendaries.
Even less than that. I get more excited from a legendary with a good roll than I do an exotic drop.

1 ReplyThree of coins have removed a lot of the grind in this game, but the grind and the rewards are what this game is all about. why are people doing/grinding all the new raid challenges now? Because they want the adept/ledgendery weapons/armour, ok most of the raids are fun aswell but the main reason is the rewards. Three of coins were a quick fix for a bad RNG system, but introducing them has removed the challenge of earning them. You used to get the chance of getting exotics from the nightfall and raids, the most challenging parts of the game (or if you were lucky crucible or a engram). And that was the point in playing those parts of the game. Now you can do 1 strike and get a exotic,or 10 strikes and get maybe 3, we're is the challenge in that. So I agree with you, remove three of coins and make a better RNG system.

Damn, according to the comments lots of people like 3oC, surprisingly. I agree with you OP. 3oC ruïned the damn game. Everybody hates the grind, but in the end the grind is what makes you play the game. I remember being super excited when Hawkmoon dropped in year 1. I have never had that same feeling in year 2 or 3.

It should be like buying a car. You can buy the base model at 56K or you can buy the top end model at 90K with all the bells and whistles. Buying a 90K car for 56K and driving it around hoping the perks will unlock is dumb. Just give me the damn top end car I paid for.
-
Considering the constant nerfing of everything, nothing is exotic anymore.
-
Exotics aren't what they're meant to be. A true "rare" weapon is supposed to be slightly OP or give tremendous perks. Granted some exotic armors give awesome perks but the weapons aren't really anything special
-
Ermmmmmmmm I think you are wayyyyy too late on this. Like really really late.
-
The only exotics I feel excited for anymore are Adept raid weapon. Coincidentally you can't get them from ToC. Huh.
-
Agree. I can't begin to tell you how exciting it was having a MIDA and Hardlight drop from strikes in the same day back in year one because barely anyone was actually getting exotics. They were so rare and bragging was so much fun. Three of Coins sort of create this "It's gonna happen soon, I just have to be patient" mentality which eventually leads you into feeling like you're wasting your time. Especially after having one drop... You think to yourself, "Just gotta play 5-7 more strikes for another drop" which gets very tedious after a while. No guarantees made drops much more exciting.
-
1 ReplyIf we had that, and exotics WERE rare, than it would be a lot harder to get rare exotic drops, like Jaderabit. I still haven't gotten one :(
-
15 Repliesthey're aimed at casual lazy kids who were raised with an 'everyone's a winner' mentality.
-
I agree and less exotic quest should be available. Having that small chance to get an exotic every week makes exotics feel exotic. There was a reason year 1 was so great. After year one they basically just handed you all the exotics. I thought 3oc were a great idea at first but at the end it just helps with making the game less exciting. My thoughts on it. I know everyone has its own opinion.
-
I agree, but more of them should be quest based, and as difficult as outbreak or touch of malice quest.
-
Very few exotics actually feel exotic anyway. Raze lighter feels exotic based on its sheer damage. Necrocasm does base on its explosions. The juju feels exotic seeing as it has infinite ammo as long as you shoot shit in the face. Otherwise almost no weapons actually feel exotic. We use an exotic weapon simply because we all like to have something gold equipped.
-
I completely agree.
-
2 RepliesI disagree, 3oc exotics have been a way for many of us to reach max level. Also it allows more of us who tend to do things solo the chance at an exotic
-
I only got a handful of exotics from year 1 crucible but those moments were glorious. I remember freaking out if somebody else got an exotic but now if I get a legendary engram from a 3oC I could care less
-
How does one like a post more than once?
-
There should be a chance to get them on just about everything you do. The more difficult the activity the more chance you have to get a Exotic. This should be the motivation to attempt the harder content. At the moment with 3oc there is no incentive to try the harder things.
-
Let's make exotics so rare that you probably won't even get one in destiny 2!
-
1 ReplyI don't recall being able to get them from heroic strikes. But yeah. I agree with the point.
